Meeting the Joes
Abigail slowly opens her eyes and looks to her left. A woman with red hair comes into her line of sight.
"Where am I?" she asks the woman.
"You're in the coyote," the woman answers.
"I guess that is what you call the truck?" she asks.
"Right, I'm Scarlett, by the way, and you're Abigail, right," Scarlett says, introducing herself.
Abigail nods because she figured that Snake Eyes had told Scarlett her name (more liked signed it to her anyway).
"Well, thanks for your help, but I'll just get out of your hair now," Abigail says as she slowly gets up.
She got about halfway when the sharp shooting pain in her right shoulder returned. The pain causes her to lie back down quickly and wince in pain slightly.
"Easy, Abigail, your shoulder is dislocated, but I can pop it back in." a man that smelled like he had just crawled out of a sewer says.
"Man, does everyone call you sewer rat or something?" she asked quickly, holding her nose, so she didn't have to inhale the stench.
*I know he stinks, but he is the person who has the field medic training.* Snake eyes signs.
Abigail can believe that she is thinking this, but she is sick of her shoulder being out of its socket. She lets Snake eyes help her in a sitting position.
"Everyone calls me Tunnel Rat," Tunnel Rat corrects her.
After getting her shoulder popped back into its socket and letting Tunnel rat put her arm in a sling. Abigail thanks him and hops down from the seat. She starts to exit the coyote. She regrets it a few seconds later as everything around her starts to spin. A millisecond later, she falls back to the floor of the coyote. Snake Eyes carefully catches her in his chest so as not to aggregate her bad shoulder. She quickly shakes the dizzy spell and looks back up at him.
"I'm fine," She says with a smile.
Abigail pushes Snake Eyes away using her good arm. Snake Eyes stood his ground and didn't move a muscle. Snake Eyes looks down at her left ankle and sees blood rolling down the area.
*What happened to your ankle?* he signs to her.
*I cut it while running through some torn bushes on my track through the forest.* She signs back.
He sets her back down on the bench, slowly rolls up her left pant leg, and notices her decent attempt to administrate first-aid on herself. He slowly unwrapped the dressing, and Tunnel Rat looked at the injury himself.
"Abigail, that cut is really deep." Tunnel Rat tells her.
"Your point is what exactly?" Abigail asks him.
"You are going to need stitches," he answers.
Scarlett hands him the medical kit on board that has the supplies needed for the stitches. Tunnel Rat takes out a needle and the medical stitches. He is about to put the first stitch into her wound. Abigail quickly backs away with a look of pure dread on her face.
"Get that slender piece of metal away from me," she screams.
Snake Eyes places his hand on her shoulder, and she looks over at him with a considerable amount of fear. *I know you're scared, but you need to let Tunnel Rat do his job* he signs to her. Abigail knows he is right, and she slowly extends her left leg to let Tunnel Rat put the stitches in.
Abigail felt the needle entering her skin for the first time and did her best not to move. As the next few stitches went in, she remembered a song her mother sang to her whenever her fear of needles took control. The teen began to hum it to herself and relaxed after a few notes into the song. Abigail stops humming once she looks down and sees Tunnel rat put in the final stitch.
"That never gets any easier." she thinks to herself.
Tunnel Rat put the needle in a peroxide bath to sterilize it again before putting it back into in kit and closing the case.
"So a fear of needles, huh?" he asks.
"Gee whiz, captain obvious, what gave that way, the scream of terror or the look of terror on my face?" She answers sarcastically.
Tunnel Rat smirks at the girl's sarcasm and leaves to put the medical kit away.
"What was that song you were humming anyway?" Scarlett asks.
"It was a song my mom sang to me whenever my fear of needles would take over to help me relax." She answers through a big yawn.
Scarlett wants to ask her a few more questions, but she notices that Abigail has fallen asleep. Snake Eyes places another pillow under Abigail's shoulders so she can rest comfortably. Scarlett and Tunnel Rat go to the front of the coyote to let her rest. He drapes a blanket over her and looks down at her. The ninja notices her face has acquired a feverish appearance. He removes the glove from his right hand and places his bare hand on her forehead. Abigail is burning up, so he quickly removes his hand and puts the glove back on. He shakes his head because he already figured she was suffering from exhaustion when he helped her back in the forest earlier. Then refills the water bowl and dips another rag into it. He rings it out and places it on her forehead. He sits by the bench in a meditative state to keep a watchful eye on her condition.
Abigail began to dream, or at least that she thought she was anyway. She is standing on the sidewalk in front of the house she grew up in (well, the first four years of her life, to be exact). Someone was standing on the front porch that looked familiar to her.
"Dad, is that you?" Abigail asks as she walks closer to the house.
"Yes, Abby girl," the man answers with a smile.
Abigail runs up to him and jumps into his arm, giving him a big bear hug.
"I've missed your hugs, dad," she says, trying to hold back the tears.
"I know, sweetheart," Her father says as he kisses his daughter's forehead.
Abigail didn't want this moment to end because she finally felt happy for the first time since the accident.
"Abby, there is something I have to tell you." Her father says in a more serious tone.
"What is it, dad?" she asks her father in a worried tone.
"Cobra is why your mother and I aren't with you today." He answers.
"Who or what is Cobra, dad? Why did they do this to us?" Abigail asks, hoping that her father has the answers.
Her father tells her that her new friends could help her find the answers. He backs away from the hug and begins to fade away.
"Dad, please don't leave me again," Abigail yells.
Meanwhile, in front of the coyote, the Joes are sitting in silence.
"So, who is our new passenger?" Ripcord asks his comrades breaking the silence.
"Her name is Abigail." Scarlett answers.
Tunnel Rat is wondering where he heard that name before. He looks up old newspaper reports and news footage on the onboard computer.
"Hey, Tunnel Rat, what are you doing over there?" Duke asks.
He tells him that he is trying to figure out why Abigail is out here in the first place. Duke asks him if he found anything. He gasps when he finds an article on a local news station website in the town they just passed through yesterday.
"Guys, you need to see this." Tunnel Rat says in shock.
The team gathered around the little screen and saw a picture of Abigail when she was four. The caption under the photo read 'The lone survivor of a horrific car accident.' They read the article about the car accident and felt sorry for Abigail. In the back of the coyote, Abigail wakes up. She slowly gets into a sitting position and turns around, so her feet dangle off the end of the bench. The teen jumps onto the floor and begins walking to the front of the truck. Once she gets to the front of the coyote, she can see the article on the small computer screen.
"So you have read about the one day I wish I could forget," she says.
She is using the wall as a crutch to hold herself up. The Joes turn around to face her, and they all notice her appearance.
"You feeling all right there, Abby? You look wiped," Tunnel Rat asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine. It's nothing to worry about. Wait, did you call me Abby?" She answers.
"Yeah, why you don't like that nickname?" Tunnel Rat asks.
"No, I do is just the last person who called me that was my father." She answers.
"What are you out here anyway, if you don't mind me asking?" Scarlett asks.
"Just trying to find a place where I belong," she answers.
"Let me get this straight you ran away from the orphanage." Tunnel Rat says.
"That's it in a nutshell," she says.
"Why did you run away?" Scarlett asks.
"Because I'll never find a family. No one wants the smart kid. I couldn't even get adopted when I was little." Abigail answers.
"One more question, how come you can understand ASL?" Tunnel Rat asks, changing the subject slightly.
"That's because my only friend at the orphanage, Michelle, was deaf," she answers.
A few seconds later, she feels her body go limp. Snakes Eyes does a ninja streak from the back of the truck to the front and catches her in his chest again. He goes down on his knees, and she opens her eyes for a minute. He pointed back at the bench and told her that she needed to rest. Abigail argues that she is fine, but her body says otherwise.
*Who or what is Cobra?* she signs to the ninja with the last ounce of strength she had left.
*I promise you'll get the answer when you are back to full strength.* Snakes Eyes signs back to her.
A smile comes to her face as she drifts back to sleep again. Back at the meeting spot, Storm Shadow stands in front of the tree.
"You let the girl escape." Bareness says.
"I didn't let her escape. My brother showed up to help her." Storm Shadow says.
Baroness walks closer and whispers the plan into his ear.
"Yes, that sounds like it could work very well." Storm Shadow says, laughing evilly.
