Cupid's Arrow Detour Part 1

A few days later, Abigail is introduced to the rest of the Joes. Roadblock the maniac, Ripcord the kind of comedian, and Duke the Boy Scout, so to speak, because he wants to help people every chance he has. Roadblock is trying to start the coyote, but the engine refuses to turn over. Roadblock popped the hood to take a look at the engine. Roadblock notices an acorn wedged between the lead piston and a spark plug.

"That's strange," he says.

"What is it, Roadblock?" Scarlett asks.

"There's an acorn stuck in the motor," he answers.

"I guess the squirrels didn't like us wake them up from their naps, huh Roadblock," Ripcord says as he makes a really bad joke.

"Well, can you get it out?" Scarlett asks him.

He shakes his head no, so Abigail climbs on the step stool and reaches down to remove the acorn. After she did that, Ripcord climbed into the driver's seat and started to turn the key. Roadblock tries to stop him, but his warning falls on deaf ears. As the engine turns over, some oil splatters onto Abigail's face.

"I can't wait to see the look on Abby's face," Ripcord says.

Abigail shuts the hood of the coyote and tries to wipe the oil from her eyes.

"Ripcord, I don't think you want to see the look on my face," Abigail says.

Roadblock hands her a rag so she can clean off her face. Ripcord gets out of the driver's side of the coyote and walks over to her. He apologizes, and Abigail tosses the rag toward him. The rag hits him in the face, and a little oil spot appears on his face.

"What was that for?" He asks.

"Nothing really, but now we're even," Abigail replies.

Everyone laughs except for Snake eyes.

"Ok, enough jokes. It's time to head out." Duke announces.

So everyone piled into the coyote and drove to the next town. A few hours later, they arrive in town. Duke tells them that they are stopping to get some supplies. Abigail hops out of the back of the truck and is awe-struck by the beautiful appearance of the town.

"You didn't get out much, did you?" Duke asked her.

"Nope, the folks were always working. They were lucky to get a few holidays or even my birthday off. So, no family trips." She answers.

Abigail noticed a jewelry store across the street and a window sign saying free jewelry repair. She reaches into her pocket and takes out the locket. The Joes go to get supplies, and she walks across the street to get her locket repaired. As Abigail entered the store, she was amazed by all the beautiful jewelry and the store's welcoming atmosphere.

"Hello, young lady, may I help you?" the man in charge asks.

"Yes, the chain on my locket broke, and I was wondering if you could repair it for me." She says politely.

"Yes, I can, young lady. May I see your locket?" the man asks.

Abigail hands the man her locket. He tells her it was a simple repair, so it would only take a few minutes. He goes into the backroom to repair the piece of jewelry. Abigail waits penitently for the man to do his job. A few minutes pass, and the man returns with the locket in a new case.

"I believe this would be a better way to carry your jewelry than your pants pocket." The man says. He hands her the box.

"Thank you, Sir." She says.

"You're very welcome young lady, and have a nice day." The man says.

Abigail turns around to leave the store. Abigail opens the box to see that the charm on her locket has been shined. The locket hadn't looked like that since her father gave it to her. She starts to go down memory lane a few seconds later. As she remembers all the happy times, it makes her smile and helps her forget all the bad things that had happened over the past few years. She is so deep in thought that she fails to see the one-year-old beagle puppy running up to her. The puppy knocks her to the ground. As she goes down, the locket flies out of the box, landing on the sidewalk. A few seconds later, the puppy starts to lick her face.

"Hey, that tickles." She says through the laughter.

A boy around Abigail's age runs up to her. "Claire down!" the boy tells the puppy.

Claire walks over to her owner, and he clips the leash back to her collar. The boy loops the leash around his wrist and looks down at her. He is of average height, has brown hair, and green eyes.

"Sorry about that. I'm still trying to train her. I'm Kyle, by the way." He apologizes as he helps Abigail back to her feet.

"No harm done. Claire is a cute little puppy. I am Abigail." Abigail says as she wipes the paw prints off her jacket.

Kyle picks up the locket and the box off of the sidewalk. "It's nice to meet you, Abigail. Is this your locket?" he asks as he hands her the locket.

"Yes, it is. Thank you." She says.

When her hand touches Kyle's, she feels something she never felt before. Abigail looks up at him and sees him blushing slightly, and it causes her to blush too. She puts the box in her jacket pocket and holds the locket in her left hand. The two teens lock eyes for the first time, and Abigail sees Kyle's beautiful emerald-green eyes. Kyle sees Abigail's dazzling hazel eyes and doesn't want to look away.

"Has anyone ever told you that you have really pretty eyes?" Kyle asks.

"No, but you did just now," Abigail answers as she fixes her hair.

"I bet that locket would look better around your neck instead of in your hand," Kyle suggests.

Abigail knew he had a good point, and she started to put it back on. She is having a little trouble, so Kyle asks if he can give her a hand. She accepts his help gratefully and hands the locket to him. Kyle walks behind Abigail and drapes the locket around her neck. He clips the two ends of the chain together, and the locket seems to melt into Abigail's chest. Kyle walks back around to be in front of her again. Then Claire runs a few circles around the teens, wrapping the leash around their ankles. She runs the opposite direction, which pulled them closer together.

"Claire, what has gotten into you?" Kyle scolds the puppy.

Abigail couldn't comprehend why her heart was beating a mile a minute or why she had butterflies in her stomach all of a sudden. Kyle looks back at her and notices they are close enough to kiss. He apologized again for his puppy's behavior. Abigail brushes it off and tells him she is just doing what comes naturally to her. He steps out of the loop created by his puppy's actions. He steps in the wrong direction, trips on his feet, and topples to the sidewalk. On the other side of the road, the Joes watch what is going down.

"That is such a cute scene, isn't it?" Scarlett asks.

"Yeah, a little, but we can't stay here forever," Duke says.

"True, Duke, but you can't be mad at her for what's happening. Cupid's arrow has hit both." Scarlett says.

"Right Scarlett even without Cupid's arrow, Abigail has that boy melting all over her like warm butter on a fresh stack of pancakes." Roadblock says.

*The dog can tell that they like each other, too* Snake eyes signs to Scarlett.

Back with Kyle and Abigail, Kyle unties Abigail from Claire's leash.

"So, how long are you in town?" he asks.

"Not too long. My friends and I will be leaving soon." She answers.

"That's too bad. I wanted to show you a place that looks beautiful at sunset," he says in a disappointed tone.

"Yeah, that sounds like a nice place," she says.

Kyle looked at his watch and noticed how late it was. "I'm sorry, I have to go. I should have been home five minutes ago," he says.

He starts to rush home, but he turns around to wave goodbye to Abigail. She waves back, and he turns back around to head home. Abigail walks back across the street to her new friends.

"So I guess you saw that whole thing, didn't you?" she asks.

*we did* Snake eyes signed to her.

"Great," she says sarcastically.

She starts to blush from embarrassment. Scarlett walks over to her and places her hand on her shoulder.

"You don't have to be so sarcastic, and it's nothing to be embarrassed about either. Your 14, so falling in love with boys is natural.." She tells her.

"I'm not in love. It was just a crush, nothing more," she argues.

"So what did he tell you before he left in a hurry?" Scarlett asks.

"Nothing. Kylee just wanted to show some special spot in town, that's all," she answers.

Scarlett notices a sad look on Abigail's face as she walks back to get into the coyote.

"Maybe we could stay a little longer," Duke suggests to his comrades.

A look of shock appears on the other Joe's faces except for Snake eyes since none can even see his face through the mask.
