Twenty-Seven: Dex
"Plato!" Sam shouts, as we make our way into the hospital wing after training, "How are you feeling?"
We all crowd round the bed and Plato smiles as, grimacing, he tries to sit up. "I'm doing alright. How did training go?"
"Jo here thrashed me, " I cut in first, elbowing Jo, who just smiles awkwardly.
"Brooke did a number on Amy," Sam says, laying a hand on her shoulder.
She looks up at him and smiles, "Yeah, shame no one can beat her. Except for Jo, that is." She flashes a smile at Jo, who grins.
"Except for Isaac," says Sam, "But they haven't fought yet."
"Now that's a fight I would love to see," I grin, and the others nod in agreement.
"But that was the last day of training, right?" asks Plato.
"Yeah," Sam says, "You were lucky to have missed it."
"I had an excuse!" Plato protests, there's a lull in the conversation. I can still vividly picture that knife entering Plato's body. Sam shivers and I guess he's remembering the same thing.
Cassie breaks the silence, but saying awkwardly, "Hey Amy, can I have a word?"
Amy glances at all of us confused and Sam even raises an eyebrow, but she shrugs. "Sure." The two girls head over to the other side of the hospital and Cassie begins gesturing to Amy.
Sam nudges me in the ribs and I turn to face him. "What?"
"Don't stare!" he hisses.
"Why not?"
"It's rude!"
Plato coughs and says, "So what have you guys going to do tonight?"
Sam looks at him slyly, "Well...now that you mention it, we're going to have a party!"
"We're what?" I ask, "Who's birthday have I missed?"
Sam ignores me and turns to Phoebe, "I was thinking that this might be your penultimate last day. And Cass's too. So would you mind if we threw a party in your honour?"
"A goodbye party?" I ask, remembering the party my Dad and Father threw for me, Mazie and Riv.
"Exactly," beams Sam.
Phoebe smiles, "That's really sweet of you! And I'm sure Cassie would appreciate it too."
"But where will we have this party?" Jo interjects softly, "In the Pit?"
"Well, yeah. We get food, go to the Pit and do whatever Cass and Phoebe want to do. And then head back here and party." Sam replies.
"But you can't have a party in the hospital wing!" says Plato aghast.
"Why not?" Sam asks.
Plato looks horrified. "Because it's against the rules!"
"Who cares about rules?" I grin. "We're Dauntless!"
"And besides," says Sam, "You're one of us. We can't have you missing out on the goodbye party!"
Cassie and Amy return just as Plato is about to find a new line of argument. Both girls are crying, yet have big smiles on their faces. And have their arms around each other. Weird.
Cassie takes a deep breath, and says, "I just want to apologise to all of you guys. I know I haven't been the nicest and that the stress has been getting to me. But I wanted to make peace with all of you before I left for Factionless. Especially with Amy." Amy gives her a nod in recognition, and they both smile at each other.
"Aw Cass," Sam says, and hugs her. Then Amy joins in. Then Phoebe. Then Jo. Plato leans out of his bed stretches out his arm to place a hand on Cassie's shoulder. Then they all turn to me and, in unison, raise an eyebrow. I sigh and hug Jo and Phoebe on the outside.
"Group hug!" shouts Sam.
"Ow! My eardrums!" Amy complains.
"Does this mean we're all dating each other now?" I mumble. And everyone laughs.
We all break apart and Cassie starts crying again. Amy rubs her shoulder.
"I'm confused," I say. "I thought you guys hated each other." Amy and Cassie glance at each other. Behind them, Sam shakes his head wildly and moves his arms in a 'shut up right now Dex' gesture.
"Well I never hated Amy," Cassie admits after a long pause, "I just took my annoyance out on her." She looks at Amy and adds, "Sorry."
Amy shrugs, "And she's apologised so I've forgiven her. Wouldn't you have done the same?"
I think back to Brooke and how she's taunted and teased me in the past. Not to mention beating me up in training. "No." I decide. I could never forgive Brooke. Nor Isaac for that matter.
"Oh," says Cassie, her shoulders slumping a little.
"That's Dex for you," Sam laughs, a odd forced laugh, for turning to me and giving me a glare, "Anyway, we're thinking of throwing you and Phoebs-"
"Phoebe," Phoebe corrects him coldly.
"Sorry, Phoebe, a party tonight. Is there anything you wanted to do in the Pit?"
"Oh yeah," Cassie says, brightening up immediately, "There was actually!"
"Cool," says Sam, and turns to Plato, "See you later!"
Plato gives us a good-natured nod as well as file out. We head towards the Cafeteria and grab some food before heading towards the Pit.
"So," says Sam, "What was it you wanted to do?"
Cassie beams, "Well, I wanted to get a Dauntless tattoo to give me something to remember you all by when I'm in Factionless." Her voice cracks slightly as she says the word 'factionless' as if shed's suddenly realising where she's heading.
I frown, remembering that Cassie was against getting a tattoo the first time we came in the Pit. "But I thought you-" I begin.
"That's really nice of you Cass!" Sam says loudly, cutting me off and sending me yet another glare.
"Yeah!" Amy chimes in, seeming to want to cut off what I'm saying too. I send them both a glare in return.
"What about you Phoebe?" Jo asks her quietly, "Anything you wanted to do?"
"Hmm?" says Phoebe, as if she has other things on her mind, "Oh, what? No." She glances round at all of us, and then quickly amends her sentence, "But a drink would be nice."
"A drink it is then," grins Sam.
We head over to the tattoo section where a tall Asian woman does a Dauntless tattoo on Cassie's shoulder. Then we head over to the bar.
Minutes later, we are all carrying drinks back to the hospital wing.
"Plato's going to be so happy," Sam grins.
Plato, was in fact, not happy. It was later explained to me that Sam was being sarcastic. But at the time, I was just very confused, standing at the foot of Plato's bed as his expression was one of complete and utter distress.
"You can't throw a party in here!" he hisses.
"Oh yeah?" challenges Sam, smiling, "Give me one good reason why I can't."
"There are other patients in here!" Plato whispers.
Sam shrugs, as he sets the drinks he's carrying down on a table next to Plato's bed. The rest of us do the same. "A party will do them good."
"They need peace and quiet!" Plato hisses urgently, as he sees Sam's determination show on his face.
"This is Dauntless!" Sam argues back, "There is no peace and quiet!"
"There is in a hospital!"
"Well these people," Sam waves a hand gesturing to the other patients, "Have got the rest of their lives to live out in Dauntless. How long have Cass and Phoebe got?"
There's a brief pause, then I say, "Two days!"
Sam sighs and sends me yet another glare, "Yeah, well, thanks Dex. It was a rhetorical question." He turns back to Plato, "You get where I'm coming from."
"True," says Plato, "But now you need to see where I'm coming from."
Sam raises an eyebrow, as Plato stares back, challenging him. Without losing eye-contact, Sam reaches for a glass of beer.
"You'll get kicked out!" Plato tries again.
"Whatever," Sam smiles, and drinks from the glass. He turns to the rest of us, "Let's party!" We all cheer, and help ourselves to a drink. Everyone has one, except from both Plato and Phoebe, who decline, despite the fact that Phoebe was the one who requested a drink in the first place. I shrug. Maybe it's an Erudite thing.
After the first few drinks, I'm feeling a bit woozy. But it's when Sam finds a computer in the hospital that things really start to get crazy. One of the nurses left a computer online and Sam manages to search up some songs online. Apparently it's the sort of thing he did back in Candor.
He turns up the volume really high and loud music begins to boom throughout the room. Plato's face goes white. He lips move as he says something to Sam but Sam just puts a hand to his ear and grins.
"Sorry, didn't catch that! What was that Plato?" Plato glares at Sam and then frantically points to something behind him. A nurse is heading in our direction. Sam pales and quickly turns the music off.
"I thought you said you didn't mind about getting into trouble," I comment, as the nurse comes closer. Sam glares at me and motions for me to be quiet.
"What do you think your doing?" The nurse screams.
"We were just-" Sam begins.
"Out!" shouts the nurse, "Now! You're disturbing my patients!"
We all grab our empty glasses and race out into the corridor.
"Even though we got into trouble," Cassie grins, "That was probably the most fun I've ever had!"
