Seventeen: Brooke

We stand in the cold waiting for the train to arrive to take us to Amity. I wrap my arms around me and bounce up and down to keep warm.

"Why do we have to get up so early?" Edgar whines.

"Oh shut up," Isaac snaps, annoyed from the lack of sleep he's got, "That's the fifth time you've said that this morning."

"That's because Dauntless is stupid," grumbles Edgar.

"Shut up," Isaac repeats.

"Alright Initiates," Amar barks, "The train should be here in the next minute. I hope you're all warmed up because you need to get ready to run!"

"Great," says Edgar sarcastically, "More running. "

"What part of 'Shut up' do you not understand?" growls Isaac. We begin to jog on the stop, as the train begins to approach from behind us. My muscles complain from all the fighting we've done recently as I force myself into a run.

With a gasp, I manage to throw myself onto the train, and Isaac, who's already on board, helps me up.

"Thanks," I smile.

"No problem," he says, his face expressionless other than his calculating cold eyes. The three of us head over to some of the seats in the train and sit down before anyone else can.

Cassie, Sam and April jump onto the train, followed by Plato and Amy. Amy trips and falls into Cassie, forcing her to fall onto the ground.

As she lies there for a few seconds, embarrassed, Isaac begins to laugh. A high-pitched almost-maniacal laugh. Edgar joins in, his low bass clashing with Isaac's voice. I laugh too, my voice sounding odd to my own ears.

Cassie gets up and turns the humiliation she's clearly feeling onto Amy, "Way to to ruin my day, Stiff. "

"It wasn't my fault you fell," Amy retorts hotly.

Sam glares at me, Isaac and Edgar, "Leave Cass alone."

Isaac smirks, "What will you do if we don't?" Sam raises a fist. Isaac just laughs, "Right. As if that would work against me. "

Plato grabs Sam and tries to pull him back.

"That's right," Edgar jeers, "Run."

"Cowards," I smirk and force myself to laugh.

April moves to Sam's and Plato's side and glares at us. Plato attempts to grab her but she brushes him off.

"Leave my friends alone," she growls.

"Or what ?" Isaac asks. Sam twists himself out of Plato's grasp and moves to stand beside April. Both of them raise their fists and adopt a fighting stance. Edgar shrinks in his chair, but Isaac just smirks, stands up to his full height and raise his too. I copy, whilst Plato hesitates for a moment and then goes to join Sam and April.

"Three against two," April says, "We all know Edgar can't fight."

"I could take out all three of you easily," Isaac smirks.

"I'd like to see you try," Sam says, and then grins as Amy, clearly fed up with her argument with Cassie, joins the three of them. Cassie just stands behind them watching.

For a moment, it looks like a free-for-all is about to take place on the train, but at the moment Amar moves away from where he was talking with Jo and Phoebe and surveys the situation.

"What's going on here?" he demands, his eyes glancing in between mine and April's group.

"They laughed at Cass," Sam says, his green eyes still glaring at us, even though his cheeks are flushed with embarrassment.

Amar sighs loudly, "Look, I know you're Dauntless but not everything has to be resolved with a fight. Stand down. All of you."

Plato hesitantly lowers his fists first, and I see Edgar on my left do the same. Sam and Amy slowly follow. And soon it's just me, April and Isaac standing there with our fists raised.

"That's an order." Amar barks. April glares at me. I risk a look at Amar's angry expression and I lower mine. April does the same. Isaac waits a few moments, almost enjoying everyone's gaze upon him and then casually drops his to his side.

"Right," says Amar decisively, "Now no fighting. Not until we've returned to the Dauntless compound after our little field trip. Everyone got that?" We all nod. Even Jo and Phoebe who have just been sitting in the corner watching the entire time.

"Why are we even going to Amity?" asks Edgar, the tone of his voice making him sound like a five-year-old, "It's such a useless faction filled with pansy-cakes." April balls her fists and moves forward as if she's going to confront Edgar again, but she's pulled back by Plato.

"If you get ranked 5th to 10th at the end of Initiation," Amar explains, ignoring Edgar's jibe about Amity "Then it's likely that you'll end up here guarding the fence."

"That's a job ?" Isaac asks with disgust.

"Yes," Amar says evenly, "So we are heading there just to show you what it's like."

"Why does the job even exist?" Isaac asks again.

"There's all sorts of things past those walls, " Amar replies, "It's our duty to make sure that they don't get in."

"Sounds dull," Edgar says.

"What's out there?" Plato asks, the exact same time I open my mouth to do the same.

Amar looks at him full in the face, "No one knows." I'm filled instantly with a burning urge to rush out of the gates just to satisfy my curiosity and see what's out there, but I force myself to crush the feeling. The area's been too dangerous for anyone to go out ever since the war.

Isaac turns to April and smirks, "Bet you'll want that job Pansy cake. That way you'll be able to stay at home forever."

April scowls, "I'm Dauntless. Just because I come from Amity doesn't mean I should have a job as a boring guard."

"Are you sure you're Dauntless?" he asks, "You haven't been doing that well in the fights lately."

April nods at Edgar, "Neither has your friend over there. How can you even be sure that he's Dauntless?"

Edgar stiffens and seems about to retort when Amar cuts in, "All of you are Dauntless. No matter how many fights you win or lose," Isaac opens his mouth to protest but Amar overrides him, "Whether or not you'll remain in Dauntless is still to be seen. There's plenty of more opportunities for you all to prove yourselves in the next coming days."

He turns to look at us, "And can all of you please shut up before I lose it?"

Isaac and I sit back down in our seats, and the rest of the journey is spent in silence, where my and April's group speak to each other in glares. Eventually, Amar announces that we're approaching Amity.

"Get ready to jump!" he shouts, and we all form lines so we can leap out one after the other. April's group line up in front of me and Isaac and he steps on the back of her shoe. She turns around and sends us a look so ferocious that if looks could kill, we'd be instantly dead.

"Remember!" shouts Amar, to be heard over the wind whistling through the doors of the moving train, "The train won't slow down like it does in Dauntless so you'll have to move quickly!"

We all nod as the scenery outside changes from town to countryside.

"Get ready!" he barks, "Three...two...one...now!" Though, we are supposed to move as an orderly group, Isaac and Edgar barge into April's line, and out of panic, I copy. They knock Cassie out of the train, and the same would have happened to Sam and Amy, had Plato not grabbed them just in time and held them steady.

I jump, following Isaac, but I misjudge the distance and land on my knees, leaving gaping holes in my black jeans. Looking around, I see that the others have also jumped with varying success. Jo and, surprisingly, Phoebe landed on their feet, but the rest of us are either on our knees, face-palming in the dirt or sprawled on the ground. April's shoe-the one that Isaac stepped on the back of-is lying near the tracks and Plato has to quickly get it.

Amar waits patiently for as all to get up, before saying, "Right. Remember, you are Dauntless representatives so I must ask for best behaviour. At least," he pauses, "Best behaviour Dauntless-wise. Don't be rude to the Pansy cakes."

He leads the way towards Amity, and with a gasp, I see that it's surprisingly beautiful. The houses look warm and welcoming and not as sharp as they do in Candor. The surrounding area is mainly fields but I can see plenty of flowers as well as crops growing. They also have a mini-forest, something I never had in Candor as it was a town-based faction, and in the distance, I can make out a play park where younger Amity children are pushing each other on swings.

Life seems so tranquil and comforting here that it's almost bewildering why April left in the first place.
