Escape
I've been awake for the past half an hour, trying to make sense of my life at the moment. The only person that cared and loved me is gone... forever. No more tears to cry, I was just staring at the wall as I laid on my side on the hospital bed.
This morning I woke up frightened due to having the same reoccurring nightmare. At the moment, I was drained. Even though I'm breathing, you can consider me dead right now. Due to yesterday's episode, my body was stiff as I was afraid to move anything. I kept thinking to myself...I have nothing to live for and nothing to love. My heart is empty and my life has imploded on itself. Honestly, I don't know what to do with myself anymore and all I could see is that I'm a danger to every living being.
Deep in my thoughts, I was interrupted with the opening of the door. Will walked in, and without saying anything he sat down on the chair beside the bed. He stared into my red and tired eyes. "I'm sorry." He said sorrowfully. In a deep, croaked voice I asked, "For what?"
"For what has been happening lately. For what you've been through." I scoffed, "I don't need pity." Will sighed, "Sophia, it's okay to admit how you feel and let it out. I'm here to help you and listen..."
"Let it out?!" I said angerly, "Were you not there to see what happened when I let it out! I'm a ticking time bomb that's going to explode. My life has been taken away from me because of this stupid ability, my dad is dead, and I don't even know why the hell I'm here or what's going on! If you think bringing me here was a good idea, then you're completely mistaken. If anything, me being in this place just makes it that much easier for me to hurt someone!" Will was speechless. He sat there staring at me blankly. I don't know if he's scared of me exploding something or because he knows I'm right.
"You were brought here for a reason. I know this is hard for you, especially at such a young age. We will explain everything --" I interrupted, "When Lennox? When will I understand what's going on? Because clearly ever since I got here all I get in response is blunt lies and the phrase 'classified.' "
Will put his hand out to signal for me to slow down and clam myself. "We are going to explain everything to you. You were brought here for a reason. What you will be told will be hard to believe at first, but you just have to trust me. Okay?" I separated my eyes from his. "Okay. Sorry for snapping at you..." He waved his hand to show understanding. "I completely understand. When Optimus comes back from his mission, he will explain everything." I just nodded in response. Will stood then smiled and put his hand on my shoulder, lightly squeezing it, "Get some rest, kid. You look exhausted." I defeatedly looked at him and gave him a weak smile. He walked out of the room and I was left alone.
Shortly after Lennox left, Ratchet had walked in to check my current status. Apparently I've had an irregular pulse for quite a while now...actually for a couple of years. Guess I haven't noticed it before, but now you can bet I'll be thinking about it all the time. "Have you had any traumatic experiences?" Ratchet asked me. I really didn't want to tell him about the day where I touched the bathroom door knob. "I've had one before..." I didn't explain anything further. "Care to share?" Ratchet implied to me. I sighed, "Not right now."
"Do you still feel any pain in your head?" He asked me. I haven't felt dizzy, but I had a headache that's for sure. Crying probably could have made it worse, especially when I'm constantly thinking about everything. "I don't feel dizzy, but I have a major headache." Ratchet began to walk towards the cabinets in the back of the room. He opened it and grabbed some pills. "Here take these." Ratchet handed me the medication and gave me a bottle of water. Desperately, I swallowed them with a huge amount of water, praying that it'll take the pain away. "You should soon feel relief from the pain in about an hour." Ratchet informed me.
"Thanks doc." I said, weakly smiling. He didn't return the smile back like he usually does. "Don't call me Doc."
"Can't promise that." I teased him. He sighed annoyingly. "So when will I be able to leave this room. I'm already sick of it." I asked Ratchet.
I really want to get out of here. The blank walls along with no movement itches my muscles, and it was killing me. I think Ratchet noticed it. "Due to your current status, you should be fine to go about your day. You still have an irregular pulse so no straining activities. If you feel any discomfort, you come to me immediately especially when you feel pain in your head."
"Will do doc." He grumbled at the name causing me to giggle under my breath. Trying not to show annoyance, Ratchet was about to walk out the door before he turned to inform me about his whereabouts. "I will inform Lennox that you are stable enough to be cleared. Wait here..." I just nodded.
Ever since I got here, I noticed that I've been in the same outfit of clothes since I left home. No way in hell was I staying here. Hospital rooms were always a bother for me if I stayed too long in them. Ratchet said I was clear so what's the point in me staying put. I tossed my legs over the side of the bed, but as soon as I stood up, dizziness took over me and I started to fall, but I quickly caught myself on the side of the bed. This was going to be harder than I thought...
Managing to finally gain my balance, I reached the door and headed outside. Looking around, I realized that this place was much bigger than what I had noticed when I first arrived here. No one seemed to notice me, so I just made my way carefully to my right. Everyone was in the center of the base, training from the looks of it. As I continued on my way to who knows where, I noticed the set of vehicles from yesterday drive in altogether. The soldiers were in their way and they cleared a path for them to drive through. Every vehicle including Ironhide's truck made their way to the corner of the base where I had seen them yesterday. Each one parked there, but no one came out of them. A couple of seconds later, the flamed blue and red semi truck came to a stop in front of a large establishment where soldiers wandered on it. Then the truck began to...transform?!?!
I must be hallucinating, dreaming, or something, because what I saw was a gigantic robot standing in the middle of the base. It was at eye level with some soldiers and from where I was standing, I could see Epps and Lennox speaking with the robot. It began to speak, using the same baritone voice that Optimus had used to introduce himself. It had the same unnaturally bright blue eyes as his and they adjusted regularly as it spoke to Will and Epps.
I didn't even pay attention to what the robot was saying. My eyes began to hurt as I couldn't believe what I was seeing. When I payed attention to my heart, it was beating abnormally. My heart dropped when I noticed that the red and blue robot began to trail off and made direct eye contact with me. Both Epps and Lennox turned around due to noticing the robot's distracted look.
I ran as fast as I could. My legs hurt but I had to get out here. This is absolutely a place where I cannot be. They could be lying and just end up using me as a science experiment. That's clearly what they do here...build robots, super soldiers, who knows what else. My name was called multiple times by Lennox, but I just kept going. As I ran I managed to make it down to the first floor and I just kept running. Several men had their guns raised at me and with the wave of my hand, their weapons were thrown far from them.
Trying to go around them, one of the men jumped on top of me, tackling me to the ground. He flew off my back as I concentrated on getting him off me.
"Sophia!! Stop!" I heard Will yell behind me. I just kept going...until the red and blue semi truck quickly drove past me and blocked my path. I could have used my ability on the robot/truck, but I was petrified by it so I backed away instead. As I tried to go in the other direction, Lennox was right behind me. He grabbed my shoulders, stopping me in my tracks .
"Sophia, what do you think you are doing?" He asked me. "Trying to get as far away from this place as possible!" I screamed at him. I tried to release myself from his grasp, but he kept his hands tight. "You cannot leave. It's not safe for you out there."
"How would you know? You're not my father! I managed to have a perfectly secret and somewhat normal life until you came to take it!" I said trying to push Lennox away from me. His face showed anger and frustration."Do you want to die just like your father?!?" Lennox asked me, yelling. And with that statement I stopped fighting. I stared at him with disgust and disbelief. "Get away from me." I started walking away, not to escape, but to comprehend what Lennox just said to me. As I was walking I turned to him, seeing that the had semi remained in the same position."Maybe, not being alive would be the best option right now."
Seeping sadness and anger caused me to storm off to the hospital room. Once I had gotten there, I did not sit on the bed, but hid in the corner. No desire to see or speak to anyone, I began to softly cry to myself. I don't know if I could do this, especially when I had just found a ginormous robot in the NEST base for who knows what! And what'll happen to me?
Not wanting anyone to disturb me, I pushed the chair and table up against the door so no one could come in. Minutes later I heard a knock at the door. I didn't answer and there was a short silence before another knock was heard. "Go away!" I yelled. A baritone voice spoke, "Sophia please let me enter...it is me, Optimus."
In anger, I repeated myself. "I said go away!" I did not get a response. Instead the door knob began to move and with ease Optimus opened the door, pushing the chair and table out of the way. He made his way over and sat on the bed in front of me. I did not look up at him. Instead I turned my head and faced the wall next to me.
"Sophia, I apologize for what you had witnessed, especially in that way. Our intention was never to harm you or keep this information from you. We were planning on telling you after Ratchet cleared you from hospitalization." I could feel Optimus' eyes staring into the side of my skull. I didn't look at him or respond. "Sophia, please... you are only making the situation more difficult."
In confusion and anger I finally decided to speak to him. "Optimus, you weren't even there. How would you know what happened? And why the hell do you have the same damn voice as that robot?" Optimus stood up and sat down on the floor close to me. "Will and I have been planing to tell you once you reached the base, but we decided that it would be extremely overwhelming to have done so..." He trailed off and hesitated, "since you had just received the news about your father." I hugged myself, knees pulled into my chest. "So where am I gonna end up? In the lab? Ready to be tested on?!"
Optimus responded, "That is not our intention." He stood up and held out his hand for me. "Do you wish to learn why you are here?" Ignoring the offer of his hand, I just stood up myself without saying a word. Only a simple nod. His eyes stared into mine and he gestured with his hand to head out the door. Waiting for him to exit the room, Optimus closed the door behind him and stood in front of me. "Follow me."
Obeying his order I followed him to the main level of the base. As I did, I saw the team of vehicles including the red and blue semi truck. For the second time, I couple feel the irregular beating of my heart. I continued to follow Optimus and we were finally within the semi circle of vehicles, where Lennox and Epps stood. I stood in place while Optimus and Lennox exchanged a few inaudible words. As they did, I realized that each vehicle had the same insignia of a face, identical to the same symbol on the base walls. To my surprise, it looked very similar to the red and blue robot's face that I had seen.
After Optimus and Will finished speaking to each other, Optimus climbed into the blue and red semi while Lennox made his way to me. "Hey kid." He said with a weak smile. I just looked to the ground, still upset about what he had said earlier to me today. "Look," Will said softly. I lifted my head and crossed my arms tightly against my body, "I'm sorry for what I said to you today. I was extremely insensitive and I did not mean for you to get upset. I just became overprotective and wanted to keep you safe. That's all." His eyes begged for forgiveness and I knew he meant that apology. "I forgive you." I forgave quickly. I continued, "So what are you keeping me safe from exactly?" Will smiled and lightly chuckled. "Guess you're about to find out. And please...don't freak out." I nodded. "You ready?" He asked me. Sighing, I stated worriedly, "Ready as I'll ever be."
"Autobots, you are clear to make your appearance." Will spoke loudly. With that, the semi truck began to transform as well as the rest of the vehicles in the semi circle. In disbelief I backed up a little, afraid of being stepped on. The blue and red robot kneeled on one knee in order to lean in at eye level. He was taller than the others and he spoke in the deepest voice that I had ever heard. In the same voice that Optimus spoke. Everything about him screamed leader. "Hello Sophia. My name is Optimus Prime. I had recently spoken to you human to human, but this is my true form." My eyes widened, "What the...? I'm confused."
Optimus explained, "The way you had seen me earlier was merely my holoform. Ratchet along with NEST have installed a holoform for each of us autobots to use in order to blend in with your society and interact with humans."
"Okay... So what are you exactly?" Disbelief overwhelmed me. "We are autonomous robotic organisms from the planet Cybertron, also known as autobots." He stated. Curiously I asked Optimus, "If you have a planet, then why are you here?" I heard a loud scoff from my left. Turning I noticed it came from the black autobot, the one that transforms into Ironhide's truck. "Did I do something wrong? Ironhide is it?" I said in annoyance. Ironhide transformed his arms into cannons and they soon began to emanate a bright orange. He threatened, "I would not feel so lucky if I were you." Optimus glared at Ironhide, "Ironhide, now is not the time."
Ironhide transformed his arms back to normal and Optimus turned back to me. "Our planet was ravaged and destroyed from years of war against the decepticons. We fought over energon, our power and life source. Megatron, leader of the deceptions, soon became hungry for power and desired to retrieve the All Spark, which ended up on your planet." Optimus continued to inform me about the autobots arriving on earth as well as the attacks that took place on our planet, which I had known to be terrorist attacks. They have created NEST in order to diminish decepticon activity around the world. Soon after, he introduced me to his team of autobots in which I had learned that Ratchet was an autobot as well. I had met new autobots that I had never spoken to before such as Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Mirage, and Mudflap and Skids, who were twins. They all knew my dad and had apparently worked with him several times.
"So are the decepticons still here?" I asked Optimus. The autobot leader nodded, "Yes, and that is why we have brought you here. Your ability has drawn the attention of the decepticons." I wondered to myself if they were after my dad too. To be honest, I was terrified. I looked to Lennox, "But how do they know about me? I lived my life as secretly as possible." Lennox hesitated and looked at Optimus in which he nodded once to him. Will turned back to me, "I know this will be hard to take in since you heard about the passing of your father, but you have the right to know what happened to your mother."
