Check Up
This morning I woke up with an extreme headache. Ever since I departed from my nightmare, my head has been pounding vigorously and I felt dizzy at times. Optimus had taken me to get checked up on by Ratchet and at the moment I was sitting on the hospital bed.
Optimus had already informed Ratchet of my reoccurring nightmares, and at the sound of it, Ratchet became extremely concerned. "How long have you had these nightmares?" Ratchet questioned worriedly. "Ever since I discovered my abilities in school." I responded. Ratchet was deep in thought, trying to put the pieces together. "The only reasonable explanation would be is that Sophia has gained her mother's memories from her time on the Decepticon ship." Ratchet explained to Optimus. Optimus' face was still and straight, "That doesn't explain why she willingly kills her mother in her nightmare." Optimus stated. I cringed when he said 'willingly kills.' It just made me feel...dangerous. Even though I already knew that. Ratchet continued to theorize possible explanations, "When a human is in the state where they are dreaming, their mind tries to make sense of everything that happens during their lifetime. The process is usually unsuccessful causing the brain to create peculiar and unrealistic images."
"What does that have to do with anything?" I asked in confusion. Ratchet continued, "You said that you started to have this nightmare when you discovered your abilities correct?" Ratchet asked me. I nodded in agreement. "Well, I'm sure your mind was constantly focusing on that event, causing your brain to mix your mother's memories with the discovery of your ability." Ratchet explained with confidence. I put some thought to it. "Makes sense to me. But why do I keep having this nightmare every single night?"
Ratchet took a moment to think and then his face hinted that he knew the answer."From my knowledge, I believe it is because your nightmare is an insight to your life. You cannot accept the fact that you are killing your mother in your nightmare and you still have not figured out who is commanding you to do so. It repeats itself over and over again until you find closure." Before I could speak, Optimus spoke first, "I believe that it is Megatron commanding her." He said with a hint of anger in his voice. I slumped against the bed in defeat. Throwing my arms up in the air I began to complain, "I don't need closure. I don't want to wait to find out who's commanding me to kill my mother. I don't want to have the same occurring nightmare for the rest of my life."
"I believe in time it will disappear. Just be patient." Ratchet said to me reassuringly. I've been patient for 5 years. That's long enough. "Ratchet..." Optimus distressed. "Yes Optimus?"
"We did not only come to you today to discuss Sophia's reoccurring nightmares..." He was going to tell Ratchet about Uncle Jesse's actions yesterday. I looked at Optimus and signaled to him with wide eyes to shut up. I know I had agreed to let Ratchet check my injuries, but I did not give him permission to tell Ratchet about my situation with Uncle Jesse. It's just too personal. Optimus continued, "When Sophia and I went to her home to collect her things, she had an incident with her Uncle." My eyes scurried away from Optimus' sorrowful gaze. He slowly continued, "She received multiple injuries due to the her uncle's actions that were brought upon her." Shaking my head, I scoffed in disbelief. I trusted him not to tell anyone. Ratchet turned to me. "What happened?" Ratchet asked me. I didn't respond to him. Ratchet didn't push it further. "Let me check your injuries. Where does it hurt?"
As I spoke, I glared at Optimus. "It doesn't hurt. I'm fine. I don't need to be checked up on." Ratchet shook his head at me. "If Optimus says you are injured, then you are hurt pretty badly. I don't care if you are in pain or not, injuries need to be treated."
"Fine." I said shortly. With hesitation, I lifted up my shirt and Ratchet's eyes widened with horror. I saw Optimus look away and slightly cringe with anger. "Your uncle did this to you?" Ratchet asked me. I didn't respond. "Your neck as well. Just from what I see, I can tell that you are internally bruised. You need to immediately ice yourself." He ran to quickly grab me multiple bags of ice. "Lay down. I want you to put ice on your bruises for 30 minutes." I did as he said. As I laid down, I saw that my bruises were purple, on the verge black. You could barely see any trace of my skin color. Truly I was in pain, but I didn't like to be treated like a damsel in distress.
Half an hour passed by and during that time period, Ratchet and Optimus were outside talking to one another. As I was staring at the clock, the sounds of ticking became louder and the room became more quiet. I could distinctively hear the irregular pulse of my heart beating faster. I was brought back to the present when Optimus and Ratchet came back into the room. In my peripheral vision, I saw Optimus sit on the chair near the bed. I didn't want to look at him. I'm completely positive that he was telling Ratchet about what happened yesterday. Ratchet grabbed a roll of gauze and headed over to where I was. "I'm going to wrap your abdomen for support." He did so and gave me another ice pack. "I want you to ice yourself today one more time. You are to put ice on your injuries twice a day until they are gone. Understood?"
"Yeah I got it." I said as I began to lift myself up from the bed. "No no no." Ratchet repeated. "You are not done here." I rolled my eyes and sighed in defeat. "What? You checked up on me. Can I go now?"
Ratchet slightly chuckled. "I need to check your vitals. Just a precaution." He checked my heartbeat first. I'm sure that was his main goal. Throughout my time here, Optimus barely spoke and was extremely quiet. "Your heart is still beating irregularly." Ratchet said in confirmation."Well yeah. It's not going to fix itself in a couple of days." I clarified.
Optimus spoke, "Why is her heart beating irregularly?" He asked. Ratchet's face was distorted with confusion."I am not quite sure. I will take a sample of blood and look more into it."
Ratchet grabbed a needle. I stiffened at the sight of it. One of my biggest fears was seeing a needle being pierced through my skin. Trying to not show my fear, I looked away and took a deep breath before I began to breath shallowly. I felt the needle poke through my skin and seconds later being extracted. "Calm down its over." Ratchet told me. I released my breath which I didn't notice I was holding. "I will inform you when I have finished examining your blood sample. You're free to go." Without hesitation I got up from the hospital bed and exited the room quickly.
I was upset with Optimus at the moment and I didn't want to speak with him. Heading towards my room, I pushed through the pain I felt in my abdomen. Struggling to find the keys in my pocket, I felt a hand on my shoulder, turning me around. I was now facing Optimus. "You seemed quiet today." I told him, avoiding his gaze. "I was deep in thought." He responded. "You didn't seem so deep in thought when you were talking with Ratchet." I said in anger.
"We were talking about your injuries that is all." He stated to me. I scoffed, "That's all?" I turned around and opened the door. I made my way inside, Optimus following behind me. "Sophia -" He called. I interrupted, "Telling Ratchet about my uncle was what you were talking about Optimus." He stopped in his tracks and squeezed the bridge of his nose. Something I noticed he constantly did in stressful situations. "Last time I checked I didn't give you permission to tell him what exactly happened." Optimus sighed in frustration. "Ratchet needs to know what caused your injuries."
"No he doesn't!!" I screamed. I heard glass cups in the kitchen shatter. I was going to lose it. Stay clam Sophie. "Sophia, my intentions are not to make you upset. You can put your trust in us. In me. Why do you hide all of this?" Optimus asked carefully. I didn't respond. He walked up to me and I hugged myself, wrapping my arms around my torso. Wincing as I had forgotten about the bruises that were there. Optimus pulled my arms from my stomach and each of his hands grabbed my wrists. "You are hurting yourself." He sorrowfully told me. I felt defeated talking about this subject. "Sophia... Tell me. Why?"
"Why should I? So you can go tell Ratchet the second you leave my apartment." I grumbled to Optimus. "There is no reason for me to tell him. I only told him about yesterday's incident, not of anything else." Optimus informed me. I didn't know I was so tense. Making an effort to calm myself, I relaxed my shoulders. "You didn't tell him about anything else? Not about the other things he did to me?" I asked him. Optimus came closer. "No of course not. That is your decision to make." I sighed in relief. Optimus continued, "Why are you so afraid to talk about what you have been through? There's nothing to be afraid of."
"Because it's my problem. Not yours or Ratchet's. People only question further and further and they see me as this damsel in distress. Aside from him beating me, I just feel dirty. Not innocent." I revealed to Optimus. It's hard talking about the things Uncle Jesse did to me. You're not the same person after that. You don't feel worthy and you don't feel wanted. Optimus hugged me before pulling away. "That is something you do not need to worry about. We all know how strong you are."
A knock was heard at the door causing me to jump. Optimus opened it revealing Lennox on the other side. "We need to talk. It's urgent."
