Chapter 14: Ghouls
(Hey guys! Thank you for all your support. Originally I wanted this story to be in the early 19th century, but I'm now making it in the very late 19th century. There will be some historically inaccurate parts so don't mind them. This chapter may be longer because I will in include more facts about ghouls. I want this book to be for everyone. So if you haven't seen tokyo ghoul, it's okay, I will different things about ghouls. Okay now back to da story)
Third person P.O.V
When Cindy snuck in to Alexander's office, she didn't realize that he was going to tell her all about the plan.
The day after she had tested Aalia for ghoul eating habits, Alexander called her into his office.
Cindy's P.O.V.
When one of the guards told me that Alexander wanted to see me, I felt scared.
"Shit! Did he find out that I snuck into his office?" I thought while following the guard.
When I sat down in the chair, I expected to get a lecture about how I shouldn't be in his office, but that didn't happen.
He told me about his ultimate weapon. I was completely stunned. Looks like I didn't have to sneak in after all.
●two weeks later●
○Tadashi's P.O.V○
The police are still looking for Aalia. After two weeks of crying over the incident, I decided it was time to tell Emiko, Sakura and Arata about what happened. I wrote them each a letter saying to meet me in five days at my house.
○Aalia's P.O.V○
My eye has gone back to normal and I don't have the feeling to eat human flesh anymore. I wonder how long it would be before I fully develop into a demon, tiger, ghoul, fairy thing.
•In the courtyard•
I met up with Yumi and we walked to the cafeteria.
"Hey" she said nudging me with her elbow.
"Hey" I said grabbing a tray to get my lunch. We then went at sat under a tree.
"Are you okay" she said looking at me.
"Yeah why?"
"You look like you're in pain"
"Uhh" I try to think of what to say. "Can I trust you Yumi?"
"Of course, I mean we are best friends"
I explained everything that Cindy had told me, even the part where I have to eat human flesh. After I finished I waited for her reaction.
"Wow that's cool, except for the human flesh part" she said looking amazed.
"What creature are they turning you into?" I asked taking a sip of water.
"My friend, I am going to be........a demon mermaid!!"
We sat there talking and laughing for about 3 hours.
"Why are we out so long?" I asked looking at the clock.
"I don't....." Yumi stopped taking when the a guard started talking through a megaphone.
"Prisoners back to your cells!!!!!" The guard screamed.
We walked to our cells and they were different.
The bars were now silver, it had an actual bed and a bigger mirror. That must be why we were out so long. I stood there staring at the cell.
"Get in there!!!" A guard yelled pushing me inside causing me to fall and scrape my knee. He then closed it and left laughing.
"Bitch" I whispered while grabbing my bleeding knee. I looked at it with wide eyes.
"The scratch...it's...it's gone!" My knee had just healed in 5 seconds.
I snapped back to reality when I heard my cell opening. It was Cindy.
"Hello sweetie" she said walking up to me. "I have some for information on ghouls for you" she handed me a folder. "Tomorrow we will give you more DNA so we can talk then" she soon left. I looked down at the folder in my hands.
I got up and sat on my bed, I then opened the file.
Page 1: Physical Characteristics
Ghouls have high physical capability and are much stronger than the average human: They are able to send the average human flying if they strike with enough force and can penetrate a human's body with their bare hands. They are also able to jump several meters high.
Under normal conditions, ghouls have a high regenerative ability: Small wounds and fractures heal in a matter of seconds to a day, and even grave wounds heal after few days, as long as the ghoul has adequate food supply. They also have a tougher body than most regular solid materials. For example, if a ghoul were to be stabbed with a knife, the metal of the knife would break. Ghouls' body wouldn't get injured easily and only more keen tougher materials can injure them. A strong enough force may also be able to break their tough body.
Ghouls have better senses than humans. They can smell people or meat from afar and can tell apart humans and ghouls by their smell. They also have a heightened sense of hearing that even allows some ghouls to discern individual footsteps from far away.
Ghouls seem to age at the same rate as humans, further allowing them to blend in.
Page 2: Biology
Ghouls have an "Rc factor" ten times higher than a human. If the average healthy human has about 200-500 Rc level, then the ghoul has about 1000-8000 Rc level. They possess an organ known as the kakuhou, from which Rc cells harden and break through the skin to form the kagune. The kagune is a hard, muscle-like protrusion described as their claws. It can take the form of a pair of sharp wings or tentacle-like appendages, a tail, or a drill-like object, depending on the ghoul's materials and his or her own Rc type. It is possible for a ghoul to have develop another, usually armor-like, kagune as part of the mutation caused by eating another ghoul. Ghouls also have an identifying feature known as a Kakugan, an affliction manifesting in the eyes as red pupils surrounded by black sclera. A ghoul's kakugan can appear either by their own will, due to hunger or from using their kagune.
Ghouls have a liking for human meat, but it is not uncommon for them tocannibalize one another. Ghoul meat is considered coarse and disgusting but it has the merits of being an alternative food source and increases a ghoul's Rc levels to the point of mutation, evolving their kagune's overall strength. Occasionally, cannibalistic ghouls gain through this mutation an armor-like kagune besides the predatory kagune that ghouls commonly possess, turning them into kakujas.
All ghouls, though invincible to damage from man-made objects, are vulnerable to damage or modifications made to their mucous membranes, such as nostrils, ears, lips.
Currently, the origin of these traces in ghouls is unknown. There are no known links as to where ghouls evolved or came from.
"huh? What's an Rc cell?" I look at the bottom and there was the definition.
Rc cells ("Red Child" Cells) are certain cells that exist only in the story of Tokyo Ghoul. The origin of the name comes from how each individual cell looks like a curled up fetus. They exist in both humans andghouls. They flow like blood but can become as solid as teeth, and could be called "liquid muscles". Typically, a ghoul stocks Rc cells by eating people. Within the body, the Rc cells are concentrated and stored in a kakuhou. Thekagune is formed by Rc cells that have been released from a kakuhou and have pierced through the skin.
Rc cells are the nutrients ghouls need to ingest.
Wow, ghouls are so complex. I became even more interested and flipped to the next page.
Page 3: Weakness
Ghouls can be killed if forced to consume normal food, which will weaken their physical condition and possibly make them vulnerable to man-made objects such as guns, knifes, swords, etc.
Ghouls will die if they receive extremely critical or life-threatening injuries that will kill them before they have a chance to heal.
It has also been said that a ghoul can be killed by decapitation but by what weapon or object is the mystery.
Well I already know that I can eat human food, so that part I don't have to worry about.
Page 4: Lifestyle
Ghouls can live as hermits; isolated and avoiding society's eyes, or can attempt to assimilate with the humans. Living amongst humans is seen as "walking on a thread of rope" because of their biology and social records. If they are caught in ghoul activities or suspected of being a ghoul, investigators have the right to apprehend or kill them as they see fit. Ghouls that are identified as such can be hunted down like criminals.
Because a ghoul doesn't require much due to their high physique and their diet of human meat, they can live adequately as vagabonds with little to no money, although such a life is generally as uncomfortable as it might be for a human. Because of their diets any money earned at their jobs can be spent on other necessities, like rent or entertainment rather than having to buy food.
They can pretend to eat food in order to fool other people into believing they are human. However they must make themselves throw up soon enough afterwards, or they'll become sick. Because they can only consume human flesh, they are very territorial when it comes to "hunting grounds" on which it is appropriate to hunt humans without notice. Human consumption depends on the ghoul as some may prefer to be scavengers who only take from people who were recently deceased. Other ghouls may moderately hunt humans as carnivores with thoughts of appreciation for the lives they must consume, although there are ghouls who will indiscriminately devour as much as they can. Ghouls who indulge in excess have developed a superficial view on the value of life after consuming so many humans, much like how humans perceive livestock they grow and consume.
Page 5: Kagune
A Kagune (赫子, shining child) is a ghoul's predatory organ and functions as their weapon and claws. It is usually as red as blood (the colours are varied in the anime to distinguish the kagune of each individual); and flexible like the flow of water (Also called liquid muscle.), but firm and sturdy. When released, a ghoul's physique is strengthened, they are more resilient and their mobility heightens. A kagune is composed of Rc cells, which flow just like blood, can become as solid as teeth and can be described as "liquid muscles". The Rc cells are released from a kakuhoupiercing the skin, and the released Rc cells form the kagune. A kagune can be repeatedly hardened and softened at will by the ghoul.
Although a ghoul's healing ability is high, the healing of wounds tends to be delayed if the wounds are inflicted by a kagune. It is also evident that in order to counter a kagune in battle, one must also have a kagune, if not, at least something in relation to a kagune. Hence, Ghoul Investigators use kagune-based quinque as a tactical means to battle against ghouls. Also it seems that the kagune are voluntary muscles as ghouls can control them whenever they want.
The kagune's appearance and the place of emergence on the body depend on the Rc typeof the Ghoul.
There are four different Rc types: Ukaku, Koukaku, Rinkaku and Bikaku. As a guideline, each type can characteristically subdue another type, although it may be different for two specific opponents.
Each Rc type has a set of strengths and weaknesses, each one unique to it's type. These are exploited by CCG in the creation of the Quinqueand Q bullets.
It is also possible for a child to inherit separate kagunes from each parent to express distinctive hybrid traits as shown with Hinami Fueguchi.
Ukaku
An Ukaku kagune (Japanese 羽赫, romanization ukaku, English approximately shining feather) is spread out like feathers and is released from the shoulder area, it specializes in high speed attacks, most of the users seeming to have hugely enhanced speed. The kagune is lightweight and can be used to deliver high-speed attacks against an adversary, the primary method of attack is crystallising their kagune to deliver a high speed torrent of spike like projectiles, however whilst crystallised they are much stiffer and can't be used for short range combat . The kagune is suited both for short-distance and long-distance attacks, being able to use their kagune as a shield or as a way to enhance their strikes. Altogether, ukaku-type ghouls have a high chance to end the battle after a short time.
However, releasing the Rc cells extremely decreases stamina. Thus, ukaku-type users lack endurance and are at a disadvantage if the battle drags on for a long time.
Ukaku kagune can use their speed and mobility to shoot down a Bikaku-type user. However, a koukaku-type user can surprise an ukaku-type user by successfully guarding against the ukaku-type user's attacks, leaving the Ukaku vulnerable to counterattacks and exhausting the ukaku-type user in the long run.
Koukaku
A Koukaku kagune (Japanese 甲赫, romanization kōkaku, English approximately shining shell) is released below the shoulder blade. This is achieved by a high density of Rc cells. It is heavy and extremely robust. Of all the kagunes, they have the greatest sturdiness and are especially suited for defense. Normally, they are generally shaped into armors or shields. But on the offense, they can be shaped like melee weapons such as drills, hammers or blades.
Due to its high weight, a koukaku's speed is inferior to all other kagunes and the kagune is hard to wield.
A koukaku can fend off an ukaku onslaught using its guarding capabilities. However, a rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, breaking their kagune and breaching their defenses.
Rinkaku
A Rinkaku kagune (Japanese 鱗赫, romanization rinkaku, English approximately shining scales) has an appearance similar to scaled tentacles and is released at the back around the waist. A rinkaku wielder has powerful regenerative abilities and its peculiar appearance and structure yield a superior striking power. A rinkaku excels in brute strength.
This type's regenerative power is a result of the Rc cells easily binding together. Their Rc cells are more similar to liquids. However, this means that the binding force among the Rc cells must be weak, therefore making the kagune very easy to break.
A rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, penetrating the kagune and breaching the koukaku's defenses. However, a rinkaku has serious problems fighting against the balanced bikaku kagune: A bikaku has comprehensively high power, allowing them to fight against the brute-force rinkaku, and the rinkaku kagune's softness makes it comparatively easy for the bikaku to cut the kagune off. This disarms a rinkaku no matter how much strength it may possess, leaving the rinkaku at a disadvantage on the defensive. It has been shown that in some cases, a Bikaku's attack can disable a Rinkaku's regeneration.
Bikaku
A Bikaku kagune (Japanese 尾赫, romanization bikaku, English approximately shining tail) typically has a tail-like appearance and is released around the tail-bone/coccyx. It is good for medium-distance attacks and has decent offense, defense and speed. Thus, they have no notable strengths or weaknesses like the kagune based on other Rc types, meaning the kagune itself is treated as a surprise "trump card."
A bikaku has better speed and durability against the brute-force, breakable rinkaku, allowing them to cut off the rinkaku's kagune. However, a bikaku will be overwhelmed by the faster ukaku user and will lose against the ukaku's long-range attacks.
The balanced characteristics makes the kagune a preferred quinque type for investigators.
Kakuja
When ghouls repeatedlycannibalize other ghouls, they rarely develop an abnormal kagune apart from the common predatory kagune. This kagune typically takes an armor-like shape, and ghouls with such a kagune are calledkakujas.
This abnormal transformation kagune also takes after the Rc types.
"Wow I never realized how complex ghouls are" I say putting the folder under my bed and getting ready to sleep.
I pull the covers over my head and fall asleep.
(Omg so many words! I'm sorry guys but I wanted to inform you (and Aalia) on what ghouls are and their abilities. To see the kagune placements look at the picture. I got all the facts from the tokyo ghoul wiki. I'm not that educated about ghouls, but now I am and so are you. Anyways see you guys in ghe next chapter!!!!)
