Chapter 7 - New Phones
Whimpers and soft gurgles filled the air as another flash of red entered Sans' vision. Someone, he couldn't remember who, was crouching down.
"Paps, no!"
Then Sans was grabbing the persons shoulder, pulling them away just as the terrified zombie child jumped. They latched onto his shoulder, biting firmly into his bones, infecting him. Sans managed to push her away shortly after, but it was too late. Blood dribbled from the wound as the little zombie scattered out of the house, unknown to everyone as she grabbed her teddy bear from the floor.
"(I'm so, so sorry!)" She gurgled, hugging her teddy bear close to her chest. "(I didn't mean to bite any of you! I tried to sneak out the backdoor but you saw me, I got scared!)"
Ben, hurriedly writing down on his notebook, continued to translate for Jane, who was watching over his shoulder. Sally sat down on the floor in front of Sans, rocking her knees back and forth as she sobbed.
"(It's okay, seriously,)" Sans said, "(If you hadn't bitten me someone else would have. But um... can you tell me what happened? I don't remember much.)"
Sally nodded, pulling an arm up to her face to wipe away the tears. "(After I woke up, I found out that I was inside of my old house. I found my Mommy and Daddy from the pictures, so I thought if I stayed home they'd come and find me. I was hungry, but I waited. Then someone did come, but it wasn't them. It was you and a group of people. I tried to run through the kitchen, but um... one of them saw me. He thought I was a normal little girl, since I was trying to hide, but he scared me. I thought he was going to shoot me, so I started to attack... and you pushed him out of the way and got bit instead. I'm sorry. I didn't want to hurt anyone.)"
Oh. So that's how he was bit. He saved someone else. But who? Why couldn't he remember?
"(After they all left you alone to turn, I tried to help you. But you got scared and tripped-)"
"(Onto the counter,)" Sans finished, hand drifting over the hole in his head.
Sally briefly nodded, sniffing.
"(Do you remember who I was with?)"
"(No, sorry Mr. I didn't get a good look at them, I was really scared.)"
"(Oh.)"
Well, there went any connection he could have with his past. Sans didn't know why, but he felt like he wanted to remember. Remember someone! Why couldn't he remember? Why did it hurt so bad?
"(Hey, kid, it's okay,)" Sans said, "(We all make mistakes, you were alone and scared. We shouldn't have barged into your house like that.)"
"(But still-)" Sally sniffed, "(I made your forget all of those people, I turned you into a zombie!)"
"(Frankly, if I had barged into a little girls house when she's home alone with a group of armed people, I deserved that,)" Sans said, "(That's the thing about me, I don't remember who I used to be. Good person or bad. Either way, you had every right to defend yourself and your little friend there. What's his name?)"
She perked up at the mention of her plush, holding our the deformed bear. "(His name is Charlie! He's my best friend!)"
"(Nice to meet you Charlie.)" Sans shook the bears hand. "(What were you doing here, Sally?)"
"(I wanted to play with some of the toys. Charlie and I got lonely.)"
That image wasn't a very good one for Sans to imagine. A little girl, with barely any memories of her life, wondering around with only an old, worn bear to keep her company. Unable to talk to anyone else but the plush, using him as her only friend. That was worse than Sans' situation before, because at least he stopped to talk to Ben.
"(How about your Mommy and Daddy? Have your found them?)" Sans asked.
Sally nodded. "(I don't remember them, but I recognized them from the pictures in my old home. They crashed in a ditch.)"
Oh no. Her parents didn't make it.
No wonder she had been turned. Her parents probably had crashed in the initial outbreak, and left their daughter home alone, waiting for them. A zombie would have easily gotten in, and she would have been turned quickly. Afraid, turned, she'd still wait for them, and that's when Sans arrived-
Wait, why was he suddenly so observant?
Sans had been noticing this for awhile, but the longer he's been a zombie, the more his abilities seemed to be coming back. His mind was becoming faster at functioning, and he found he was noticing more details that he didn't before. He was becoming more observant, more quicker. Smarter. His reflexes were improving each day, he was becoming more alive.
Maybe after more time, his memories would return. They were slowly coming back, so it'd take awhile, but it was a good theory based on everything else that's happened.
Sans was both excited and worried. If he was a bad person, he didn't want to remember that. But at the same time, he felt like there was something he had to remember. Someone he needed to remember.
His head hurt.
Ben wrote down a few words and showed them to Jane. She looked at Sally and groaned.
"Fine," She said, "We can take her back. But we do have to find her new clothes."
"(Wait, what?)" Sans asked.
"(I can come with you guys?)" Sally asked, looking excited.
Jane stared at their gurgling, confused. Sans caught note and grabbed one of the doodle boards nearby, writing down his question of her choice and showing her.
"Sans, I'm not a complete a*shole," Jane said, "If she doesn't try to eat me, we can take her. But we do have to stop at the clothes section and pick up a few new outfits for her, not to mention I think it's about time we all stopped to get some phones..."
Jane continued to ramble on, Sans giving Sally a thumbs up. Sally giggled and hugged Charlie, glad she had some new friends.
~~~~~~
Ben was a bad person.
That's the conclusion he came to when they were picking out phones, staring at the floor. He didn't remember much about his past, but he had a feeling he was a bad person.
Why else would he suddenly destroy a picture of a happy family? Why else would he only ever play video games? Did he drive away his old family? Why was he so scared of water?
"(Hey, look, we can still download apps!)" Sans said, throwing an arm over Ben's shoulder to show off his new phone. "(I'm downloading a meme maker and I'm going to make memes about the end of the world.)"
"(Cool.)"
Sans narrowed his gaze at him. "(What's wrong?)"
"(God, can I keep anything from you?)"
"(Nope. Now spill.)"
Ben sighed, looking over at him. "(I don't think I was a good person before I was bitten.)"
"(Oh, okay.)" Sans said.
Confused, Ben asked, "(What?)"
"(Does it really matter?)" Sans asked, "(I was worried for a little bit, but really who cares. We both know Jane is a mass murderer and we still hang out with her. Not to mention you're a pretty good guy now.)"
"(What if I get my memories back?)" Ben asked.
"(I think at some point everyone finds out they're a little bit of a bad person. No one's perfect, and what matters is what you do now. Like, for example, look at my background. That'd make you a good friend.)"
Ben looked down at snorted, finding it a zoomed in picture of Jane with a weird expression, no doubt having caught the human off guard. "(It's amazing.)"
"(Thank you. But seriously, Ben, it's okay if you weren't a good person. You're still a teenager, no doubt you were confused about it. Not to mention how you're a pretty cool person now. I'd say I'd probably give you mercy.)"
"(What do you mean by mercy?)" Ben asked, looking at him.
Sans opened his mouth, as if the answer was obvious, but paused, looking confused himself. "(What did I mean by...?)" He trailed off.
"I didn't actually think that phones could function at the end of the world, really I hadn't expected this, but now that we have our phones set up we should go back now," Jane announced to them, giving Sally back her phone.
"(Well, whatever you meant by your weird moment, thanks for the help,)" Ben said, patting his back.
"(No prob,)" Sans said, shooting finger guns at him.
