Chapter 23 - Strategy

Not very much happened after they were brought to the new location. The moment they stepped foot inside, two bags were immediately placed over their heads, blocking their views and their teeth. Sans couldn't tell what they were doing, and none of the soldiers were talking, so the best way he could get any grips on his environment was by giving up. Really. After he realized most of his senses were cut off, Sans just flopped onto the floor, not moving until one of them were forced to drag him. A mild inconvenience for them, but one that worked to Sans' advantage.

Being dragged about helped him feel the basic floor and turns better. If he was walking, he wouldn't be able to tell the turns, but now he could feel each sharp drag of his body, along with how the floors felt and each change of the floor, so he knew how many rooms they passed.

Right, right, left, straight, straight, left, straight, right.

To be honest, he wasn't really sure how he came to that solution, or how quick he was able to memorize their route. He just... did.

Now inside of their room, Jeff and Sans had their bags ripped off, finally letting them observe their environment. There wasn't much to look at. Old, iron walls practically hugged them from how small the room was, and one simple iron door created the escape to their prison. Dust hung in the air, heavy with it's scent.

Sans coughed, reeling back as he covered his mouth. There was dust in the air. Gross, disgusting, causing him and his brother to draw back.

"All of the sentries, they're... they're gone!" Papyrus choked out, staring in horror at the environment. Not a single soul was in sight, only the dust piles scattered around gave any sense of presence in the snow filled field.

"We can't- Paps, don't," Sans said, "I know what you're thinking. Don't give them mercy. Please."

"(Great, we're trapped now,)" Jeff groaned.

Sans snapped out of the memory, looking back at his zombie friend. Right. He couldn't keep getting lost in his thoughts like that when he was in a predicament now.

Jeff leaned over and sneezed, no doubt the thick layer of dust having affected him as well. Distant gunshots could be heard as Sans glanced around. They were only getting out by the door, it seemed.

Another sneeze. Jeff straightened, tilting his head to allow his black hair to trail over his shoulder. "(How long do you think that we'll be here before Jane bursts down the door?)"

"(I...)" Sans trusted his girlfriend dearly, he really did, but there was a difference between a horde of zombies and an entire force of armed and protected people with large guns. "(It might help her if we try to get out ourselves. Or get a gun."

Jeff held up his hands, ropes tightly wrapped around them. "(How?)"

"(I don't know! Let me think.)"

Okay, so he knew some basic knowledge. He knew they were in a facility, with several large fences around it. Much more secure than the monster base. No one was getting in unless they were specifically invited inside. The guards were all armed, so fighting them with a knife wasn't going to work. Sure, Jane was strong and fast, but so were guns. And it wasn't like she could teleport.

"(Wait,)" Sans said, "(Don't all monsters have magic?)"

"(I thought you were made out of magic, or something,)" Jeff said.

"(Maybe. I just- How do I use my magic?)"

That peaked Jeff's interest. He grumbled some grunts, chewing on his lips as he thought. "(Oh darn, can zombies even use magic?)"

"(I think I used it once before, but I don't remember how.)"

"(What if you just thought really hard about it? Does it work like that?)"

Sans shrugged, but tried it nevertheless. Focusing his mind, he stared at the floor. Maybe if he just thought about it, he and Jeff would simply teleport home. Forget any of this.

But forgetting this wouldn't make the problem go away. If he just ran, they'd probably come back. This was staged, no doubt, and by the person in Frisk's body, whoever they were. They had to face this now, but Sans didn't know how.

"(Um, so,)" Jeff adjusted in his seat, stealing a few glances towards the wall. "(Do you know how we agreed not to trust the human, and how they probably aren't Frisk, or whatever?)"

"(Yeah,)" Sans said.

"(Basically I can see them. The, well, the real human. They're in the corner.)"

Well, that was new. Sans looked over to where Jeff had gestured, seeing nothing but a corner. No human, no person. Just emptiness.

"(I can't see them,)" Sans said.

"(Frisk said only determined people can see them, apparently I'm determined,)" Jeff explained, "(Enough to maybe fix this.)"

Fix this? Jeff was determined enough to make this all go away? How?

"Listen, kid..."

Sans kneeled down to the brown haired child, patting their head. Frisk looked up, large yellow eyes observing Sans.

"You have a real amazing gift, but don't let that go to your head," Sans said, "When you have power, you can't go crazy with it. Even if you don't suffer consequences for using it badly right away, you shouldn't abuse it. Use it if you want, yeah, but don't make other people play things for you. People won't like that. And one day, even if you're not ready, the universe has a way of fixing things. Especially by giving people you've wronged the power to beat you."

"But..." Frisk looked down at the glowing button. "No one will remember."

"Won't you?" Sans asked, "The guilt might eat you up, or you'll become so distant that you'll cause harm to so many people. Power is a sacred thing, but it's risky to have. Either you learn to control it, or someone else that wants it will come and try to take it away. So... and... like Cha..."

That's when the memory faded away.

"(They said I could do it, but I can't yet,)" Jeff said.

"(Can you have Frisk look around?)" Sans asked, "(See if they can figure out where any weapons are, or a key?)"

Jeff followed Sans' request, turning towards the person and mumbling a request. After a few moments, he turned back.

"(They're going to try,)" Jeff said.

"(Good.)"

Sans tried his magic once more, squinting his eye sockets and trying to simply imagine any sort of magic. It didn't work. He felt... different, than when he used his magic (if that's what happened) in the store. Like he was missing something. When he had appeared out of the store, there had been something else sparking inside of him. Something he was missing here, something he wasn't using.

With no other choice, the two sat in silence. They'd have to figure another way out.

~~~~~~
Papyrus was caught off guard by what Jane was doing. Instead of dressing up, like she normally did, she was dressing down. Borrowing a dirty shirt from Papyrus, throwing her usually nice black dress to the side before she slipped on the dirty material. She wiped away her black lipstick, ruffling up her usually nice hair.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"Sans has been kidnapped, again," Jane said.
"What?" Papyrus asked.
To think he just got his brother back, and now he was gone again? Sure, Sans didn't remember anything, but they were working on it! Papyrus just found him, he didn't want to lose him.
"It has nothing to do with you, they're using him as a hostage for me," Jane said, looking over at Papyrus. "The human was working with them, the kid was the one who left the hostage note."
"The kid?" Papyrus asked.
To say that was a surprise was to lie. Honestly, ever since Frisk showed up Underground, they've acted... odd. Creepy. Staring oddly at a knife, always getting this large grin whenever no one was looking, it was unusual. Scary. Papyrus tried his best, but even he found himself locking his room at night whenever they were in the house.
"They want me back, probably for the hate juice," Jane said, "And that's why I asked you to come here." She ran a hand through her now messy and tangled hair. "I have to turn myself in for Sans and Jeff to get out, so I won't be able to help much with them escaping. I want you to work on that."
"How?" Papyrus asked.
Jane stopped momentarily. "Well... I want just you and one other person to go, a large group won't help anyone. Much less, I don't trust any of them out there. I'm not putting Sans' safety with any of them."
"What do you want me to do, then?" Papyrus asked, "What if they don't give Sans and Jeff back?"
"Oh, they won't," Jane said, "Sans and Jeff are both the most advanced zombies, they're the best experiments for these people. You're job is going to be getting them out while I distract."
"Why don't you just break them out?" Papyrus asked.
"Because I have a... history, per say, with these people. Some revenge I haven't fulfilled. That's also why I'm dressing like this, to make myself appear as in need as possible. As annoying as it is."
Jane walked over to a drawer and paused, looking back at Papyrus. With a sigh, she pulled it open.
"You're one of the few people who I can trust," Jane said, "You don't let the crowd misguide your judgement, but you don't stupidly shut out their words either. If I can trust anyone with this, it'd be you."
She pulled out a small object and placed it into Papyrus' hands. What was this?
It was small, no longer than his pinkie, with a thin glass. A vial. Filled to the brim with some black and lightly glowing liquid. What was this?
"I managed to grab one of those before I ran away years ago, I doubt they noticed, as I have far more in my body." Jane looked over. "And monsters can't use the void, so it'll be useless for you."
"What is this?"
"Hate juice. Sans also told me it could be called the void, either one works. I know you can't use it, but I want you to bring Ben and Sally with you. Give it to one of them if you're in a pickle. It should make the virus much stronger, so they'll be able to infect a lot of guards in there. But that's only if you're in a predicament, because you're still alive, you might have to fight all of the zombies if that happens. And while you guys do that, I'll be killing the people who ruined my life before."
~~~~~~

Jeff looked at the corner where Frisk had been. They had left awhile ago, when was the kid going to come back?

The two zombies tried to keep conversation with jokes to entertain themselves, but there wasn't much they could do.

Until the door opened.

Jeff looked over, noticing the woman who stepped into the room. Her appearance, it looked...

"Jeff, you can't stay out here all day." She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.

"Mom?" Jeff asked.
