Chapter 20 - Into the Core
In case some of you readers don't read my announcements, basically from now on I'm going to be switching a once per day upload schedule to every other day. Don't worry, it's just for the time being, but I've been trying to transfer all of my stories onto AO3 and since I obviously have a lot of them, it's going to take awhile. So, to help it catch up without just spamming my readers on there, I'm switching to an every other day schedule on Wattpad and twice a day schedule on AO3 to help for the time being. As a sorry, here's another chapter on the same day!

"Come on Sans!"
Little Papyrus, no older than six or seven, was pulling on Sans' hand. His new red boots dug into the ground, trying to usher his brother towards... somewhere. Sans couldn't remember.
"Are you sure you want to see them, Paps?" Sans asked.
"Yes!" Papyrus said.
"Even the large, scary needles?"
Papyrus paused, his face flushing. "N-No, I'm a big boy now! Needles don't scare me!"
Before Sans could reply, the large doors next to him opened, out stepping the man from his memories. His Father. He noticed his two children standing outside of his lab, pausing his writing of his pen.
"Oh, what are you two doing here? Is school let out early?" He asked.
"School was let out early, someone brought an ant farm and it broke," Sans said, winking at his Dad. "There was alotta screaming. So I thought we'd wait here to walk you home like how you wait for us."
"We snuck out!" Papyrus said.
"Paps!" Sans said, flicking his head.
"Ow," Papyrus grumbled.
"I was wondering when the day would come," Their Father sighed, "Sans, I know the classes are too easy for you, but you can't skip, much less take Papyrus with you. School is valuable for information."
"Someone said in class the earth was flat and the teacher agreed," Sans said.
"Nevermind, you made the right call."
"Can we see what you're working on?" Papyrus asked, trying to peak behind the tall legs.
Their Dad quickly stepped to the side, blocking off his view. "It's nothing!" He said quickly, "I didn't convince the new human child to become an experiment to make their soul powerful enough to break the barrier!"
Papyrus, being little innocent Papyrus, blinked. "Okay then!" He said.
"Dad, you're a horrible liar," Sans said.
He groaned. "I know."
"Sooooo, you gonna show us the human then?" Sans asked, "Because if you don't I will run past your legs."
"Your curiosity and scientific sense of discovery is both pleasing and utterly terrifying," He said, "But there's no point if I accidentally blabbed. Don't tell King Asgore, or he will likely run at me with a spear."
"Why?" Sans asked, "Are the experiments dangerous?"
"Not necessarily, at least, at the dosage I'm giving," He said, "It should slowly build, not to be noticeable, but to give Chara a small boost. I'm not risking giving them a higher dosage, especially since it may harm or kill them. Small doses."
The next memory following wasn't one as pleasant.
A needle, long and firm, filled to the brim with a black liquid, was lifted.
"What are you doing?" Sans hissed.
Red eyes glanced over from under brown bangs.
"I'm getting stronger," The human whispered, "I hate society. I want to destroy it."
"You can't have extra doses!" Sans said, their card game long forgotten as he shuffled it to the side. "It's pure hatred! You might go mad!"
"But I'll be strong!" They said.
"I don't care, you're my friend! I can't let you do this!"
Sans grabbed the needle, trying to pull it from their hands. However, they must have been stealing more doses than Sans had expected, because he had been forced down against the ground in an instant, his weak efforts useless. The tiles were cold when he hit them.
"You don't understand, humans are terrible! They're always out for me! And so are you!" They said, "But you'll understand." They used one hand to roll up his sleeve on his right arm. "I'll make you understand."
"Wait wait wait-!"
Sans kicked away as the needle descended, ready to inject him. His child mind was whirling, he couldn't remember what it would do to a monster without the proper hatred. Would it turn him into that deer thing? Didn't his Dad say something about it not having any effect? He couldn't remember, he just wanted the needle away from him.
And he succeeded. His Father must have heard the commotion and pulled Chara away, carefully checking with Sans to make sure he was okay.
"It's fine, Sans, the void doesn't do anything unless your soul already has intense hatred," He said carefully, "You're fine. You're safe."
Sans quickly engulfed his Father in a hug. He didn't want to let go.
"Chara, what do you think you're doing?" He asked, standing up with Sans still in his arms.
"It's not fair! You're just as bad as everyone else!" Chara yelled, "I'll show you, I'll show both of you!"
"I believe it was a mistake to give you any of these injections." His Father swiped the vial out of the child's hands. "To fill a soul of hatred with more hatred was a failure on my part. I should have simply destroyed all of my files when I saw how the humans planned to use them."
"No, no!" Chara screamed, "I need the power!"
Sans ducked into his shoulder at the volume.
"You're filled with hatred from the void, it's taken a toll on your mental health," He said, "You have no control over it. If I were to give you more hatred, I might just tip you over the edge. Leave. Now."
"I hate you!"
The last memory was the worst.
A scream. His Father's scream. The vials of the void that he had been disposing of inside of the core weren't destroyed, instead they spread out. His Father had been curious, eye sockets widening behind his glasses as he discovered that fungus wasn't the only host of the void.
"T-The fire, it- it's a host for the hatred!" He said, "Of course, why didn't I think of that earlier. While the fungus is far more controllable, fire itself replicates hatred just the same! Though, what would happen if the void is exposed to fire? I-"
That was the last thing he heard from him. Neither of them noticed Chara approaching before Chara was pushing the scientist over into the core.
"Dad!" Sans screamed, reaching out.
"Oh, come on, Sans," Chara hummed, turning towards him as black flames built up behind them. "I'm just getting started."
