Chapter 14 - Alphys
An uncertain amount of time passed before a small lizard monster was brought into the room, carrying some materials. She looked hesitant, and her posture only grew smaller at the sight of Sans, her body trembling.
"I-Is he... actually..." She whispered, tail curling onto itself.
Sans really didn't know what was going on, but he didn't like the sight of a lab coat. They better not.
"I'm not sure Alphys," Undyne said, "But he's been able to talk. I should go get Papyrus, but... are you okay being alone with him? He's tied up, he can't hurt you."
"Y-Yeah," Alphys mumbled, "Yeah, I s-should be..."
With the confirmation, Undyne gave her a quick hug before she left, closing the door with a soft click. Leaving the two short monsters to stay in silence.
"U-Um," Alphys started, looking at Sans. "A-Are you alive? Like, um, a-a normal person? Undyne said y-you can talk..."
Sans shrugged. It depended on what she meant by normal.
"You-You understood what I-I said, o-oh dear," Alphys said, hugging her bag closer to her chest.
"Iiiiggghhhhh don'ttttt... bitjdhdhgvdh..."
Sans shook his head, pressing his jaw against his shoulder afterwards to try and relieve the pain of talking for too long. He had already spent a lot of that morning talking to Jane, then a lot of time grumbling on the way here. His mouth was starting to hurt, and concentrating was becoming more difficult. He's been talking for too long, and now it decides to take its toll? Right when he needed it the most?
"Talkkgg... normal... harg... concentrateeeee..." Sans tried to explain slowly.
"Do you m-mean that you have to concentrate t-to talk?" Alphys asked, Sans confirming. "O-Oh. But your language comprehension s-seems fine... Do you mind if I-I ask some questions? You can just n-n-nod or shake your head."
Once again, he shrugged. If he could give his opinion, he'd love to see Jane again, but leaving likely wasn't an option.
"Okay..." Alphys whispered, grabbing a chair and setting it down in front of him. After she was situated, she set down the bookbag, pulling out a clipboard and a pencil to take notes. "L-Let's see... So you fully u-understand me? Like, everything?"
Sans nodded. Alphys wrote down some notes.
"And... y-you attacked Undyne, right?" Alphys asked.
Sans shook his head. "N... nogggg... attacgh... defend... ed my... shegh..."
"You d-defended yourself?" Alphys clarified.
After she asked that, Sans nodded. He didn't just up and attack her, he was defending himself.
"I'm g-guessing then that you r-run away from... wait..."
Alphys looked up at him, adjusting her glasses. "D-Do you... know... who I-I am?"
Finally did Sans realize what the confusion must have been, and the pieces clicked together. Undyne must have knew his name because, if anything, this was his old survivor group. Jane mentioned that when monsters escaped, the survivors stayed together, so Sans must have been with this monster group before he turned. It was why Undyne was so quick to grab him, and why everyone else was acting weird around him. They all probably knew him.
But Sans didn't know them, nor did he know Alphys. So all he could do was shake his head.
"Don't... knowgghhh... you... mem... memgeries... gonneeeeeee..." Sans said, "But... my nameeee... Sans! Found itgghhh on aaaaghhhh lis... lic... card."
Alphys looked like she might burst out crying any moment. No doubt the sudden information that a zombie was coherent, along with it being someone she used to know, would upset her.
"I-I... um... are all zombies like y-you?" Alphys asked.
Sans did a motion with his head, suggesting it was a yes and no situation. "Zom... beughs who dun't eatttttt... flesssgghhhh like meeee. I never agggeeee personnnnn beforeh."
"Zombies who haven't eaten flesh are more coherent than the o-others?" Alphys asked, "So you've n-n-never eaten anyone?"
"No... justtttt ketccchhhuppppfffff."
Alphys finished her writing and reached down to her bag again, pulling out some materials. "I-I haven't gotten a sample of the virus f-from a live zombie, much less one who's coherent, and um... I can be quick, can you promise n-not to bite me?"
Promise? Promise was a strong word. Sans didn't like that, he didn't want to promise. His reaction, though, didn't occur until Alphys had approached with a needle, his self defense starting to kick up as he struggled against the ropes. It didn't do much to his binding, but it seemed to scare Alphys away enough, the scientist quickly taking multiple steps back.
"O-Oh my- I'm so sorry!" Alphys held the needle with shaking hands. "I didn't mean t-to scare you! I won't d-do that again! Sorry!"
Alphys returned to her seat after that, quickly pushing back all of her medical supplies. She could study other zombies, sure, just not Sans. Especially with a needle. He didn't like the thought of that.
"I-I can't exactly m-make any more progress without g-getting samples," Alphys said, "But I-I don't want to untie you because... well, y-you might bite me."
She was right, Sans couldn't deny it. He wouldn't eat anyone, but biting in self defense wasn't out of his playing field. After all, he was tied up, the only thing he could use was his mouth. And if it came down to it, he might bite someone.
"Hey, Alphys, I'm back with Papyrus," Undyne said, pushing open the door. "How'd it- why does Sans look so scared?"
"I t-tried to get a small sample of his marrow a-and he f-freaked out," Alphys said, "And... he doesn't h-have any of his memories. A-At all."
Following Undyne was Asgore and a few other people Sans didn't recognize, all staring at him the way Sans stared at a nice bottle of ketchup. Another goat monster, a woman, followed in behind Asgore, looking at Sans with a restrained glance. Behind her came in a skeleton, one tall, with a- was that a red scarf? Sans liked red scarfs, they looked pretty.
The random skeleton acted much more differently to seeing Sans. He gripped both hands onto his scarf, looking like he both wanted to run up to Sans while also wanting to jump out of the nearest window.
"He has... none?" The woman asked.
"He said he only knows his name from a card, I-I think he found his drivers license," Alphys explained, "And-"
"Why is he tied up?" The skeleton asked, "We can't do that to him! He-'
"He might b-bite," Alphys said, "I just tried to g-get a sample and he freaked out. I-I don't think he trusts any of us."
"Yupppp," Sans said.
"Oh dear," The goat woman said, pressing a hand against her snout. "He can actually... I thought Undyne was lying."
"Thanks, Toriel," Undyne said sarcastically.
"Ifff... youggghhhh... untieeehhh me, I wonnn'tttttggg tell Janneeeeee," Sans said.
He didn't know these people, and he didn't care. Sans just wanted Jane. He really liked Jane.
Though, he did feel kind of bad for them. Everyone looked so sad. Alphys looked like she wanted to cry, Undyne looked like she wanted to punch something, Asgore looked plain upset, Toriel looked like she wanted to run, and the skeleton looked like he was going through the stages of grief. Was he okay? Why did he look so sad? Would a pun cheer these people up?
"What?" Toriel asked.
"Letttt me gooooo," Sans said, "Or... girllllfriennddd willllhhh commmeeee."
It was a warning. Sans didn't want them to die, they seemed like nice people, despite the kidnapping part. They might know him, sure, but Sans didn't know them. They couldn't just keep him here and expect everything to go well, did they?
"What do you mean?" The skeleton, who must have been the Papyrus Undyne mentioned, asked.
"Youuu kidnapppedddddd meeeegggg here," Sans said, "Not gooooodddd for Jannnneeee. Jane pretttyyyy. Jane kill yough all."
"Who do you mean?" Toriel asked.
Just at that moment, his phone went off, ringing loudly from his pocket. Unable to take it, Sans motioned for Undyne to grab it from his pocket, who obliged.
~~~~~~
"Do you really think that was Sans, bro?" One of the guards asked.
"I hope... Undyne is... okay..." The other said.
"Oh, bro, look!"
Both guards looked down the street, catching sight of a woman walking towards them. A female human, with her hair flowing in the wind, coat hugging her fit body. She walked with confidence, a knife hanging in her hands.
"Are you... saying she is... prettier than me?" The guard next to him said.
"No bro, you're my world!" The bunny said.
"Bro, you too."
The woman continued, flicking a bundle of black, slick hair over her shoulder as she pressed forward. Instead of walking up to the gate, though, she stopped in the middle of the street, giving a little wave to the two guards.
"Hello!" She sung, a little too happily, "Do you guys know a fish monster?"
"Who, Undyne?" The bunny guard asked.
"Oh, so that's her name! Silly me, I should have known so earlier," Jane said, her voice bouncing with a cheerful tone that sounded so unnatural that both guards wanted to run from her. "I assume she's still in there with my boyfriend, then. I might as well call."
Both guards were confused by what she was saying, but their attention quickly was turned towards the street behind her. The bunny survivor reacted first, raising his gun.
"Bro-"
His boyfriend stopped him, placing a hand on his gun and lowering it. "There's... there's no point, bro," He mumbled, looking out across the now vastly growing crowd of zombies. "We're surrounded."
~~~~~~
"Hello?" Undyne asked.
Today, frankly, wasn't going as planned in the slightest. She had no idea what she expected from Sans when she took him here, but this was not it. He had the ability to talk and understand what they were saying. Sans was alive! Still a zombie, and he didn't remember any of them, but he was alive! And there! Papyrus understandably was the most shocked from this, and had cried a lot before he got here, but memories could be restored. Once they could all sit down Sans and explain to him who they were, and after they got the water cleared, Sans could be untied and they could start off.
Instead, she was answering the phone to someone who sounded happy, too happy, that made her feel like she should hang up out of plain fear.
"Is Sans in there with you?" Jane asked from the other side.
"Yes," Undyne said, "Who is this?"
"Could you put it on speaker, please?"
Undyne looked at everyone else, unsure of what to do, but they looked just as lost as she was. They didn't expect a phone call, so Undyne simply obeyed the question, placing it onto speaker.
"Sans, hello?" Jane asked.
The response from Sans was instant. He immediately perked up upon hearing Jane's voice, starting to bounce in his seat from excitement as he made loud gurgling noises. None of them were real words, but it seemed to be good enough to Jane, as she replied shortly after.
"There you are! It's so good to hear from you!" Her voice sung, "Now that I know you're alive, now I can deal with the fish b*tch who kidnapped you."
Uh oh.
"So, I was told Undyne is your name, and you just so happened to kidnap my boyfriend," Jane said.
"Wait- boyfriend?" Undyne asked.
"Yup!" Jane announced happily, "You see, I'm a survivor, and he's a zombie. We're a Romeo and Juliet type of situation, and... as you know, a lot of people crave those types of stories. And oddly enough, that includes zombies. So if you would please look out of the front of your school, I could explain further."
"What does she... oh no..." Asgore said, looking out of the window.
Undyne followed, breath hitching at the sight.
Zombies. Tons of them. So many crowding the street she couldn't even see the street anymore. The horde stretched further than the window could show, zombies gurgling as they stood. If they all moved at once, they could take down the fence and entire rest of the monster population without problem.
They were surrounded, outnumbered, without enough magic or bullets to go around. Screwed was a better way to put it.
A woman, standing in the front of the horde, noticed the group suddenly appear inside of the window and waved to them. How could she see them so quickly from that distance? Her eye sight and reaction time must have been amazing.
"We're..." Papyrus mumbled, unable to finish his sentence, overwhelmed with everything that's happened.
"Here's what's going to happen," Jane hummed, "I want Sans down in five minutes, unharmed. If he isn't, I'll unleash the horde. You and I both know they'll be able to take down the gate without challenge, and we'll just storm the school until we do find Sans. Then, I'll personally find you and bash your head into the ground so you can't become a zombie. Do we have a deal?"
"But you don't understand!" Undyne said, "We never wanted to hurt him, he's from our group, before he was infected! I'm an old friend of his!"
"Hm, well, I don't care," Jane said, "It doesn't matter if you were his friend or not, heck, girlfriend or not. He's my boyfriend, and he doesn't remember you. Even if you were his sister, I'd still kill you, because you took my boyfriend away from me while we were on a date. I don't let anyone touch what's mine. Five minutes."
Everyone fell to silence, slowly looking over at Sans from the surprise. Sans grinned at them, the first time in his stay, his usual smile. "I warrneedd youuuu."
