Chapter 1 part 4

He started the car and I took my jump leads back. I turned my car off and turned back to his gorgeous old Ford.

He sat in his seat writing in his notebook looking up at me every so often. I closed his bonnet for him and waited for him to finish. He looked up at me and seemed to be quite unsettled. He picked up his radio and after a brief pause waved his goodbye and drove off.

I waved back, watching him turn his car and take the long road back towards town. I turned and saw Burt sitting on the porch giving me a look. "I was just being nice. If I'm not a little friendly to these people they will think I'm a nut."

Burt grumbled at that. "I know how you feel about these things, but she was a nice car. It surprises me that they have an old car like that here, and she's a working vehicle, which is always nice to see. Anyway, shall we go in and.." Burt barked and snarled cutting off what I was saying.

I turned to see another car coming up the long road. "Oh look, Burt, aren't we popular today?"

The small blue car travelled slowly towards us stopping next to my car.

The owner opened the door and walked towards me. "Tia Frost?"

I eyed the small smartly dressed lady. "Who are you?"

"My name is Velvet Rush the solicitor you contacted." I nodded and waved her inside the house.

I walked away from the garage across the road from the police station. I was still a little stunned when I walked through the door. "Well?" Janna asked as soon as the door closed.

"You where right she is odd."

"What happened?"

I sat down next to her. "I think she's someone that's just not used to being around people... or that's what I thought at first. Now I would say she is just someone super private that's been... I don't know, hurt by people."

"You would have to be pretty badly hurt to be like that."

I nodded setting the folder and Dictaphone on the desk. "She's documented the encounters she has had with Edith, like she knew the system and..."

I trailed off remembering her reaction to my question about how she knew what was wrong with the rust mobile. "And what?"

"She had the same answer for me when I asked her how she knew what our limitations where, as she did when she diagnosed what's been going on with old Betty."

Janna's eyes went wide. "She did what?"

"Old Betty wouldn't start again. She jump-started me and told me that old Betty needed new piston rings and her battery was dead. She told me to take her for a new battery as soon as I got back here. So I drove her straight to Bill's and asked him to look at her. She said something about..."

I opened my notebook where I'd written what she had said. "The spark plugs would be fouled. So Bill looked and told me the battery needed changing and the piston rings where shot. I asked him how he knew that he said the spark plugs where fouled... but she guessed that from low oil..."

"OK that's freaky! So what answer did she give you?"

"She said she had a lot of interests." I said quietly.

We both sat in silence for a minute. The phone rang and we both jumped. Janna picked up the handset and answered.

I watched the little blue car make its way back down the winding road until it was lost from sight. Burt grumbled behind me and I turned to him. "I don't know why you are complaining, I have to deal with these people. All you have to do is sit there and look cute." I could see the smile in his eyes at that. "I think I need to get away for a few days." Burt sighed and looked at the papers the lady had given me, I still held them.

I sighed and then looked at them. "You're right I need to deal with this first. Come on I need a drink... something stronger than tea."

Burt waged and walked back inside. I followed him throwing the papers on the table. I grabbed the bottle of whisky and headed to my chair.

Burt sat in front of me watching me disapproving, as I opened the bottle and drank from it. Several large gulps later I felt better. "Don't judge me, Burt. It's been a stressful day."

He sighed and jumped up to his chair. I opened my book and poured myself a whisky, instead of drinking from the bottle. I lost myself in a different world, far from the stress and complications of the real world.

It was getting dark as I looked up from my book. Burt was snoring in his chair and I looked up at the clock. Dinner time. I stood a little wobbly and looked at the bottle. I'd drunk half of it. Whops I didn't mean to drink that much.

I staggered to the kitchen pulled some meat out of the fridge and started making something to eat. When I was done I cut the meat up and put half in Burt's bowl.

I looked over the papers on the table as I ate. "Looks like we have everything we need to add the new complaint to the other one before our court date." Burt looked up from his bowl next to the table licking his lips. "Do you think she will learn when we win and she has to pay costs and compensation?"

He huffed and went back to his meal. "That's what I thought." I pushed the papers away and washed up.

I turned from the sink to Burt who was sitting behind me. "I think I'm going to get an early night Burt."

He waged at me and darted upstairs. I chuckled and followed him up. I took my coat off and my boots then laid on the bed next to Burt. "It's a dark night tonight Burt." He looked up at me as I stroked his fur. "The darkest of nights are the time to reflect on the days past. I hope that the days to come are less stressful than these days have been."

Burt's answer was to yawn at me. I smiled at him and stroked his fur. "I'm sure you will be happy as long as you get more rabbits."

Burt wagged his tail and I could see his hope for just that. "Well then, you had better be a good boy then."
