Heidi
I was sat in the car. The guy called Anthony was driving and Near was sat to my right. I watched as Wammy's house disappeared from view. It was my home and now I was leaving it. Near was playing with the rubix cube I saw his come in with. He had completed it multiple times and was currently undoing it so he could do it again. I felt strangely mad at him. He left me without even a goodbye and now he had the nerve to come back and ask me to help him solve the Kira case. Roger told me all about what Near had been up to in the last 4 years. I wasn't going to come but then Roger told me that this was the only way to find out the truth about Watari's death. It was Kira that killed him it was no accident. With that information I decided that I would help, for Watari. I would do whatever I could to help bring Watari's murderer to justice.
"You are angry with me." Near said breaking the silence.
"After you just left me alone in the orphanage without even a goodbye, of course I am angry. Though I suppose we didn't really know each other anyway so if I look at it that way I have no right to be angry at you."
"So you are saying you are indifferent?"
"At this point in time I'm not sure what it is I am feeling towards you."
"And what about Mellow and Matt?"
"The same goes for them."
"But I came back for you they didn't." This comment made me angry.
"No Near, you came back for my brain, not me. That much was clear from the start." I sighed calming myself down. I looked out the window not wanting to look at Near. There was silence in the car.
"If you really feel that way then why come with me?"
"For Watari. Kira killed him so I want to help catch him so Watari can rest in peace knowing his murderer is behind bars."
"So if Mellow and Matt had come back for you..."
"Yes, I would have gone with them." I said cutting him off.
"What if I told you that Mellow and Matt have gone into hiding and cannot be found?"
"What about it? That is what I expect for Mellow. He will most likely try to solve the case behind the scenes and then show up once he has done it."
"So you think that he is trying to solve the case?"
"Yes, of course he is. It was clear when I met him that all he wanted to do was prove that he was smarter than you. He wanted to become L's successor and this was the perfect chance for him to surpass both you and even L himself." The was another silence in the car.
"The pictures on your wall. There was one of Mellow, Matt and me. You have missed us more than you will admit."
"Perhaps, after all you were the first people of my age group to be kind to me. Maybe they were there because the connections I had with you 3 were a new start for me. After you left I became friends with everyone at the orphanage and I believe I gained the confidence to do that from the 3 of you. The reason is something I myself are unsure of currently." Near finished unraveling the rubix cube and handed it to me.
"Here." He said. I took it and looked at it. It may have been 4 years since that day when Near introduced me to toys but they were still the only toys I had played with. I studied the rubix cube carefully, the whole time being fully aware if Near's eyes on me. I found that from the way the mechanisms inside the cube worked that you could actually complete the whole cube with one 6 moves. I turned the sides and 6 moves later the rubix cube was indeed complete. I felt a smile come across my face as I was pleased that my theory was right. "Impressive. Not many people work that out in the first go." Said Near. I handed him back the cube and then the car stopped.
"We're here." Said Anthony speaking for the first time. He got out of the car and went around to the boot. Slowly Near and I got out of the car too. It had been a long time since I had been at an airport. Then I realised the last time I had been on a plane was when Watari had taken me from France to Wammy's house...
I sat in the middle of the row of three seats. Near sat to my left by the window and Anthony sat to my left. I was not happy with how close I was to them, not to mention that I could feel myself overheating due to the long coat, hat and shades I had to wear. It had been a long time since I had had to hide what I was from the public. The other children at Wammy's house had actually seemed to accepted me. They seemed to find me really interesting and I was really popular with everyone since I wasn't fully human. It was strange for me to be the centre of attention and I was friends with everyone there but I didn't like all the attention. So I would often stay in my room and only come out at meal times. I found I liked being by myself, even though most of my life I had only wanted a friend. That was still true but I wanted one friend, just one good friend that would be there for me when I needed them to be. Everyone at the orphanage claimed to be my friend but I could see through there lies and knew that if the time came when I really needed one of them to be there for me they would all disappear, and I would be left alone. That is why it was better for me to be alone, because someone like me could only ever be one there own. Someone like Watari. He was a real friend, he got nothing out of being nice to me and yet he still was. He did everything in his power to get me out of that cell and into Wammy's house because he knew I was unhappy. Not because he wanted something but simple because he was being kind to me. Thinking about Watari my eyes began to tear up. Luckily the black shades I was wearing covered up the fact that my eyes were wet, but then I single tear rolled down my cheek. Near pulled put a tissue and handed it to me. I looked up at him and took the tissue slowly.
"Thank you." I said with my voice wavering a bit. How did he know I was crying?
"I noticed you were crying it was only the natural thing to do."
"You noticed?"
"It was obvious you would be upset coming on a plane since the last time you came on one was with Watari, and since he was very important to you it is only reasonable you would get upset, so I came prepared." He paused and then bend down to rummage in his bag. He pulled out a little plastic toy with numbers on it but they were all mixed up. "Here. It is a puzzle you have to move the numbers around until the numbers are in the right order." I took it from him and began moving the numbers around.
"Thank you Near." I said quietly.
