A couple of days went by and after 9 days of me being there I got a very unexpected visit from Mellow and his friend...

I heard them coming long before the got to be outside my room. The voice was clearly Mellow's and I could hear the footsteps of another boy beside him. They were talking whilst walking down the hall and I could hear every word.

"You wait outside for a minute." Said Mellow.

"Why?" The other boy asked.

"Because she might not want to meet you and I don't want to freak her out."

"Okay, since when have YOU cared about freaking a girl out."

"Shut up." Said Mellow sternly.

"Alright, I will stay here until you come get me." The boy said as the reached my door. Then the door opened and Mellow stepped in.

"Hey Hope." He said closing the door behind him.

"Who is you friend out there?" Mellow looked shocked I knew this.

"You heard us coming?" I simply nodded. "Right, well it is my best friend Matt. After we were all told about you every one wants to meet you and since I had already met you Matt asked if I could take him to you. You don't have to met him if you don't want too..."

"It's fine. You can let him in." I told him. Mellow knocked on the door signalling for his friend to come in. He moved out the way and in came Matt. He wore a stripy top and blue trousers and he also had goggles strapped to his head. I also noticed he had something in his hands. It didn't look like any of the toys Near had showed me but it was definitely something like a toy. He stared at me, which made me very uncomfortable.

"Wow, you really weren't kidding about the ears and tail." He said talking to Mellow but not taking his eyes off me. "Hey fox girl, I'm Matt."

"Fox girl?" He laughed slightly. "My name is Hope and I will have to ask you to refrain for calling me that ever again. It is an insult to what I am and to the nature gods." He stopped laughing. 

"Right."

"So what's that?" I said nodding towards the thing in his hand.

"This?" He said holding it up. I nodded at him. "You mean to tell me you don't know what a video game is?" I gave him a confused look. "Wow, then you are really missing out." He walked over to my bead and sat down. He motioned for me to sit next to him and then he taught me how to play...

In that morning I sat with Matt and Mellow playing video games. I sucked at first but it didn't take me long to pick it up. Eventually I was really good and both Matt and Mellow were impressed. I learnt that Matt was the 3rd smartest person at Wammy's after Near and Mellow, but he wasn't a successor to L. I found Matt an interesting person though he seemed to not care for the world much and was more focused on playing on his video games. Mellow sat on my bed eating something he called chocolate the whole morning. He even let me try some and it was amazing. I did start to see a pattern and Wammy's house. Everyone seemed to have one thing that they were obsessed with. For Near it was toys, for Mellow it was chocolate, for Matt it was video games and for me it was probably my drawing. I had fun with them thought the whole time I found myself thinking of Near. I much preferred his company to that of Matt's and Mellow's. Near was a lot calmer and I like playing with the toys he had. Unfortunately Near hadn't visited since that first day when he came to my room with all those toys. I thought maybe I had upset him. Or worse, the fact that he didn't enjoy my company as much as I enjoyed his. I found the thought rather upsetting. After linch things got a lot worse because I was suddenly called to the main office...

I managed to avoid being seen by anyone on my way to the main office and when I got there I found Near sat in front of the desk doing a puzzle. Roger was behind the desk and I assumed that we were waiting for Mellow. Near looked up from his puzzle and gave me a simple nod and Roger looked very sad. Something was very wrong that much was clear, but what could he have to say that involved me and L's two successors. Mellow came into the room and stood beside me in front of Roger's desk. I had Near to my right and Mellow to my left which felt a little strange.

"I have some bad news for you all." Said Roger. I could hear the deep sadness in his voice. "As you may know L has been working on this Kira case." He paused. I had heard that there was this new 'god' who was killing criminals with heart attacks, but I had no idea that L was working on the case. "Unfortunately it has cost both Watari and L's lives." NO, my mind screamed at me. Watari...he can't be dead.

"What did you just say?" Said Mellow grabbing Roger's shoulders.

"I'm afraid L is dead."

"No, he can't be dead. He promised me he would catch Kira and arrest him, and now you are saying his dead." Near then tipped his puzzle upside down so that all the pieces fell out.

"If you can't won the game. If you can't solve the puzzle then you are nothing more than a loser." He then started the whole puzzle again. My eyes were wet and they were threatening to spill.

"So who did L pick me or Near?" Asked Mellow slamming his hands on the desk and learning forwards.

"L hadn't picked yet." Said Roger remaining calm. Mellow backed up.

"You know what it should be Near. He never gets emotional like me. He just uses his head like it's a game of a puzzle and as for me. I'm leaving his institution."

"Mellow..." Roger called after him.

"Don't waste your breath. I'm 15 years old. It's time I started living my own life."And with that Mellow turned and storm out, but as he did our eyes met and I saw that pure determination in his eyes. There was no way he was giving up like that. He was going to go after Kira himself and get to him before Near. That was the way to finally prove to everyone that he was better than Near...

The next couple of week came and went. My 13th birthday passed without notice as I hadn't told anybody. I didn't care for my birthday and I was still mourning for Watari. Not to mention that Mellow had left with Matt and Near had also left. They were the only people I considered friends. There were the only people I actually talked to in the orphanage. I still hadn't come out of my room and I didn't plan to either. But with those three gone...it left me alone in the orphanage with no one...
