Chapter 34: Emergency Room

Scott's P.O.V.

My heart raced as I jumped in the car, starting it up immediately.

"What exactly did the message say?" I asked Avi harshly.

"It says 'we're at the hospital and we need you guys. Hurry, it's important.'"

I sighed shakily, trying to keep from freaking out.

"I let it happen again," Avi muttered to himself. "I can't believe I let it happen again."

I put a hand on his shoulder. "It's alright man. It's not your fault. We just have to try and stay positive."

He nodded, putting his face in his hands and taking deep breaths.

I knit my eyebrows together, desperately trying to stay calm, but what if Mitch was hurt again? How could I live with myself?

When we got to the hospital, all of us  nearly ran to the entrance.

"Do you know where Mitch Grassi and Kirstie Maldonado are?" I asked the woman at the front desk breathlessly.

She pursed her lips. "And who are you?"

I clenched my fists. "Scott Hoying. Practically family. Now where are they?"

She looked us all over, then smiled, giggling softly.

"What is so funny?" I asked harshly, extremely frustrated.

She shook her head. "Nothing. I believe that they are in the emergency room section of the hospital."

I ground my teeth together. I still had no idea how to get there.

Seeing that I was overly frustrated, Avi stepped in front of me, smiling at the woman. I sighed, stepping back.

"And where would that be?" Avi asked calmly.

She pointed down the hallway. "You're going to go down that hallway, take a right, and it'll be through the last door on the left."

I took off as soon as she had finished giving us directions.

"Thank you!" I heard Avi thank her, then his and Kevin's footsteps following closely behind me.

"Scott! Slow down!" I heard Kevin shout breathlessly behind me.

I ignored him, continuing to run through the hallways. I took the right, then ran all the way down the hallway to the last door on the left, bursting through the double doors.

Everyone that was in the waiting room immediately turned to stare at me, their eyes wide. I saw Nurse Cheyenne standing towards the back of the waiting room with tears in her eyes. I walked over to her quickly.

"Cheyenne, where are Mitch and Kirstie?" I asked, trying to keep myself contained. "Why are you crying? What's going on?!"

She smiled and put a hand on my shoulder. "I'm so glad that you're here,"  she choked out.

"What-"

I was interrupted by Kirstie coming into the emergency room waiting area, also crying.

"Kirst, what's wrong?" I asked, suddenly ten times more worried than I was before. I mean, I love Kirstie, but if she was fine, that meant something was wrong with Mitch.

My Mitchie...

She laughed through the tears, burying her face in my chest. "Nothing. Absolutely nothing is wrong."

"Then what is going on?" I could feel myself getting more and more frustrated and confused, and if someone didn't tell me what was going on right now, I could see myself snapping very easily.

She patted my arm. "Just wait."

I saw her walk over to Avi, who gave her a confused look. She whispered something in his ear, to which he covered his mouth, seemingly shocked.

I threw my hands up in the air. "Will someone just tell me what is going on?!"

I looked to Cheyenne, who seemed to be crying harder. I gave her a questioning look. She pointed towards the door, covering her mouth with her hand. Slowly, I turned toward the direction of the doors, gasping.

Two people were holding the doors open, and in came Mitch. He looked so beautiful in a dashing black tuxedo that I couldn't help but tear up.

"What are...what are you doing?" I asked, forgetting all about how worried I had been a minute earlier.

"I love you so much Scott," he said softly. "You've been there with me through everything, even when I couldn't walk anymore. You are what's been supporting me for the past ten years of my life, and I know there's no way I could possibly repay you for that, but I can try. Kirst, Avi, help me?"

The two nodded and walked to either sides of him, lifting him up out of his chair. Once he was up and standing, he nodded at them, and slowly, they let go of his arms.

"Mitch! What are you...oh my gosh!" I couldn't believe it, my Mitchie. Standing again! "How...?"

Kirstie began to cry harder. "H-he worked s-s-so hard...every day so th-that he c-could surprise you. H-he was so e-excited to sh-show you that he c-could stand, b-but we c-couldn't get h-him to w-w-walk."

I let the tears flow freely down my face. "I love my Mitchie whether he can walk or not."

He smiled bashfully. "I still have a few tricks up my sleeve." He took a deep breath, then continued. "I know you're usually supposed to get down on one knee for these things, but..."

The next few seconds seemed to happen in slow motion. Mitch's legs started to wiggle a little, then slowly, he took a cautious step towards me.

It was like watching a baby taking his first steps. It was cautious, but also with a hint of danger underneath. I could see the pride in his eyes as he stumbled towards me, falling into my arms. He looked up at me from underneath his eyelashes.

"Scott Richard Hoying, will you marry me?"

Our tears mixed together as I kissed the beautiful brunette in my arms passionately.

"Yes. A million times, yes," I whispered, leaning in for another kiss.

After a few moments in our own, perfect world, we were bombarded with hugs and congratulations from all of our friends.

"Mitch! When did you know you were able to walk?" Kirstie asked, amazed.

He shrugged. "The night that Scott got us our new apartment, I just knew that I wanted to be with him forever. So when I was practicing, I thought of Scott being right there in the room with me. That was the first time I felt like I could do anything."

I grinned down at him, his features blurry through my teary eyes.

"I'm so happy for you two," Avi congratulated, slapping me on the back.

"Can't wait for the wedding," Kevin added.

"Me neither," Mitch mumbled, hugging onto my neck. I bent down and wrapped my arm in the crook of his knees, picking him up bridal style and carrying him to his wheelchair. All around us, the people in the waiting room clapped and cheered for us, making Mitch blush.

Cheyenne walked over to us with a tissue to her eyes. "That was beautiful," she said proudly.

"Thanks," Mitch said, grabbing my hand.

I suddenly remembered what had happened previously to Mitch's proposal. I squeezed his hand.

"Don't you ever scare me like that again," I told him, also throwing glances at Kirstie and Cheyenne.

"But you got here really fast," offered Kirstie.

I shook my head. "That's not the point Kirstin." She made a sour face at the mention of her full name. "Just don't ever do it again. I can't handle the thought of losing my Mitchie again."

"Yes sir," she said playfully, giving me a hug.

"You will never lose me Scotty," he promised softly, wrapping his arm possessively around mine. I found myself getting lost in his dark brown orbs, as if I were in a whole other world.

"Alright boys," Nurse Cheyenne called, snapping us out of our daydreams. "I've got an emergency room to run, and as much as I'd love you two to stay, I don't think I can justify shutting down the emergency room to gossip with you all."

I gave her a hug. "No problem. We'll get out of your hair. Besides, me and my fiancé," I said, winking at Mitch, "have a lot to discuss."

So I think I'll do one more chapter.

I've loved writing this book and I've kind of fallen in love with the characters, so there might be a second book in the future.

What do you guys think??

Love you!!
