Chapter 16: Behind Closed Doors
Avi's P.O.V.
I had never seen Scott this serious before.
It had been fifteen minutes since Kirstie had disappeared into Mitch's bedroom, and I could tell that each minute that she didn't come back out made him that much more nervous.
Of course the fact that my girlfriend was alone in a room with Mitch made me a little uncomfortable, but not near as scared as Scott was.
Scott had told me that Mitch had a concussion and a few infected cuts, but he made it clear that something else was bothering him. He had actually said that Mitch might be...depressed. But about what?
Scott had kept his mouth after that, leaving me to jump to my own conclusions. For the most part, I had no idea what could be bothering him, but one suspicion kept eating away at me.
What if Troye was...hurting him? I knew it was a huge accusation, but when I thought back on everything I knew about their relationship, the pieces clicked into place.
The way that Troye always acted as if he was above Mitch.
How Mitch always flinched slightly whenever Troye came near him.
How Mitch's eyes always darted towards Troye before making a decision.
One by one, everything started to make more sense. I was almost sure that I had figured out what was going on, but there was a huge problem with my assumption.
What if I was wrong?
I would defend Mitch in a heartbeat if I was absolutely sure that Troye was abusing him, but the fact was, if I wasn't completely sure of it, then there was nothing I could do.
It felt like I had mountains of evidence stacked up against this guy, that every little thing was in my favor, but somehow he was still innocent until proven guilty.
Scott paced the floor worriedly, his deep blue eyes darting to the door every few seconds. It was actually painful to watch this formerly carefree softie reduced down to nothing.
After another gut wrenching few minutes, I heard a door slam from inside Mitch's bedroom.
At the same time, both mine and Scott's eyes shot towards the still shut door. I held my breath, and I got the feeling Scott did too. It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
The door remained shut, adding onto the crushing amount of suspense I was feeling.
Finally, the door knob started to turn- ever so slowly- and out walked Kirstie.
I should have been relieved to see her.
Scott rushed forward, wrapping his long arms around her body in a huge hug. I guess he hadn't noticed how pale she was. It looked like she had seen a ghost.
They whispered back and forth to each other, still wrapped up in the hug, before Scott finally released her. By now, Kirstie had swapped the deathly afraid expression for a much less unsettling one, but it didn't slow my racing mind.
Why had Kirstie been in Mitch's room for so long?
What was making her act so...different?
Why was she so afraid?
I knew that she wouldn't give me any answers in front of Scott, because whatever it was, it was very clear that it was about Mitch, and it wasn't good. I knew she couldn't stand to see Scott any more upset than he already was, and hearing something even worse about Mitch just might send him over the edge.
"He's taking a shower right now," she explained, more to Scott than me.
The blonde nodded, still looking distraught.
"Would you guys like some water or anything?" Scott asked, being the gentleman that he was.
"I would love some," I said. "Thanks."
Kirstie just shook her head slightly, declining the offer. Scott disappeared into the kitchen.
"So what was that all about?" I whispered, stepping closer to her so we wouldn't have to talk so loudly.
"It's...nothing," she replied, staring down at the floor.
I scoffed, trying to hide my uneasiness.
"You can't expect me to believe that nothing happened back there!"
"Avi, just drop it."
"I can't just drop-"
"Please."
She looked up at me with her big brown eyes, pleading with me. I hadn't seen her like this since-
"Here's your water Avi," Scott said, offering me the cold bottle. I took it, immediately trying to hide the intense moment that we were just having.
Scott didn't seem to notice though, his eyes still focused on Mitch's closed bedroom door.
"It's going to be all right Scott," Kirstie assured him, resting a hand on his shoulder.
But was it really going to be all right?
