chapter 18

Bellatrix’s POV

The tunnels beneath the gym were a claustrophobic nightmare. The air was thick with dust, and the walls were damp, as though the earth itself was sweating from the chaos above. My boots sloshed through puddles as Willa led the way, her glowing eyes the only beacon in the near-total darkness. Wyatt shuffled next to me, his breath labored, but he kept up. Luna and Wynter brought up the rear, their nervous murmurs echoing off the walls.

“Remind me again why we’re following a mystical glowstick underground?” I muttered, swatting at a hanging root.

“Because,” Willa snapped, her patience clearly running thin, “if we don’t, that shadow thing will do more than crash the Prawn. It’ll destroy everything.”

“Fantastic. We’re saving the world again.”

Wyatt chuckled softly beside me. “Look at it this way—maybe this time you’ll get a medal.”

“More like a gravestone,” I shot back, but a smirk tugged at my lips.

The glow grew stronger as we descended, illuminating a cavern that widened into a sprawling underground chamber. At the center of it was the Moonstone, perched on a pedestal of jagged rock. Its radiant blue light pulsed like a heartbeat, filling the space with an eerie hum.

“There it is,” Willa whispered, awe creeping into her voice.

“And there it’ll stay unless you’ve got a crane tucked in your pocket,” I said, folding my arms.

Before Willa could retort, the cavern rumbled, loose stones raining from the ceiling. Luna cursed under her breath. “We don’t have time to argue. This place is about to cave in.”

“Fine,” Willa snapped, turning to the group. “We’ll need everyone—wolves, zombies, and humans—to get the Moonstone out. Bellatrix, grab Zed and Eliza. They’re stronger than they look.”

“On it,” I said, already moving.

I found Zed and Eliza near the entrance, their faces pale but resolute. Zed raised an eyebrow as I approached. “Let me guess—we’re the heavy lifters?”

“Bingo,” I said, jerking my thumb toward the glowing stone. “We need your undead muscles before this whole place comes down on our heads.”

Eliza nodded sharply. “Lead the way.”

Back at the Moonstone, the wolves had already started carving out a path through the rubble. Zed and Eliza joined in, their strength making quick work of the larger obstacles. I directed the humans—minus Addison, who was mysteriously missing—to form a relay line, passing chunks of rock out of the cavern.

“Wyatt, watch your footing!” I barked as he stumbled near the edge of a fissure.

“I’m fine!” he shot back, though his wobbly stance said otherwise.

“Sure you are, zombie-boy.”

Piece by piece, we cleared the way, the Moonstone’s glow becoming blindingly bright as we freed it from its rocky prison. Finally, with a collective effort from wolves, zombies, and humans, we hoisted the stone onto a makeshift sled and began the arduous trek back to the surface.

The cavern groaned ominously, a final warning as we emerged into the cool night air. Wynter collapsed onto the grass, panting. “Never… doing that… again.”

“You and me both,” I muttered, brushing dirt from my jacket.

Back at the den, we placed the Moonstone on its pedestal, the necklaces of the wolf pack glowing brightly as they recharged. The tension in the room eased as the energy coursed through us, restoring strength and balance.

Willa placed a hand on the Moonstone, her expression one of relief. “We did it.”

“Barely,” I said, leaning against the wall. “Next time, let’s leave the world-saving to someone else.”

Addison’s POV

The air was colder than it should’ve been, biting at my skin as I followed the shadowy figure through the woods. I didn’t know what possessed me to leave the others—maybe it was the way Bellatrix had looked at me, like I was some glittery joke, or maybe it was the whisper in my mind, urging me forward.

The figure moved like smoke, its form flickering as it glided between the trees. I tightened my grip on my flashlight, the beam barely cutting through the unnatural darkness.

“Where are you taking me?” I demanded, my voice trembling despite my best efforts.

The shadow didn’t answer, but a moment later, I saw him.

He stood in a clearing, his dark robes blending with the night. His eyes glinted with malice, and a sly smile curled his lips as I approached.

“Addison,” he said smoothly, his voice like silk dipped in venom. “I’ve been expecting you.”

I hesitated, my gut screaming at me to run, but my feet stayed rooted to the spot. “ Who are you? What do you want?”

“Not what I want, my dear,” he said, circling me like a predator sizing up its prey. “What you want.”

I narrowed my eyes. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“You want respect. Power. To prove you’re more than just a pretty face in a sparkly dress.”

I clenched my fists. “I don’t need your help for that.”

“Don’t you?” His smile widened. “Bellatrix doesn’t respect you. None of them do. But I can change that.”

“How?”

“Simple.” He stopped in front of me, his gaze piercing. “Help me take down Bellatrix. Once she’s out of the way, you’ll have everything you’ve ever wanted.”

I swallowed hard, doubt gnawing at me. “And what do you get out of this?”

“revenge,” he said, his tone turning cold

I looked away, my mind racing. Bellatrix’s smug face flashed in my mind, her constant jabs and cutting remarks. But so did the image of her standing in that collapsing cavern, barking orders and keeping everyone alive.

"I'm in" I said as he smirks

"Excellent. Let's get started" he said
