The trio had escaped the Goldstein residence in the undercover of night. Not that it was that difficult since Newt simply apparated them down to the alleyway below and they were off. Better yet the streets were utterly deserted.
Corin felt the need to hold her wand inside her pocket, for one reason or another the stress of New York after dark were anything but rushfulโShe felt chills...And they weren't from the declining winter temperature.
"I was watching you at dinner." Newt said abruptly to the fellow walking beside him, and Corin simply shook her head in trying to understand the method in which Scamander's mind operates. "Yeah?"ย
"People like you, don't they Mr.Kowalski?" She knew that Newt meant it as a compliment, but his observation was such a Hufflepuff trait that she remained silent behind them.
"OhโWell, I'm sure people like you tooโHuh?" Jacob said, turning towards Corin for some aid and she smiled with a shrug. "No, not really. I annoy people." Newt said, but in a tone that suggested that it was more of a second thought.
That it didn't really bother him at all.
"Honestly Newt, I've spent the last few days with you and I can promise you...That you aren't annoying. Not in the slightest." Newton had turned over his shoulder in the instantly but hurried his attention back in front of him, while he had said his own insecurity in the sense of an after-thought. Corin was quick to inflict her own take on the matter.
Had he not annoyed her already?
He'd made her angry a few timesโUpset evenโHow could that not count as annoying?
Jacob caught the starting smile that continued to waver here and there whenever he thought back to Corin's sweet words.
"Why did you decided to be a baker?" Scamander said, hoping to defuse the tension that still lingered in the air. But the muggle took the question with his own sense of insecuritiesโHe didn't know what other direction he wanted to pursue, career wise.
"Ah well, because I'm dying in that canning factory. Everyone there's dying. It just crushes the life you. You like canned food?" Newt shook his head at the question, he couldn't remember the last time he had canned food since the beginning of his expedition, but he learned soon into his adventures that his case was suitable for much more than creatures and their exbits.
"Me neither. That's why I want to make pastries, you know. It makes people happy...Ohโwe're going this way." The sudden change of pace causes Roe to yip, and Corin let out a huffing smirk.
"Settle down or you're going back in the case, the last thing I need is for you to get lost in this city love. It'd break my heart." She cooed down, kissing the top of the pup's head.
She had missed Newt's next question, but he was rather curious on the life of a muggle without the prospect of magic in their everyday lies.
"Er...I ain't got no collateral. Stayed in the army too long apparentlyโI don't know." Corin's mouth gawked, didn't this country have a strong pride in aiding their soldiers after the war?
Merlin that snotty banker could aid someone who fought in the war?! Corin was about to say somethingโPerhaps controversial and out of place a woman from this time would be, but also would've caused an obvious strike in the fact that she almost said 'World War II,' when Jacob only fought in the first.
Oh no, even the second world war was daunting now that she thought about it.
"Of course I fought in the war, everyone fought in the warโyou didn't fight in the war?"
"I worked mostly with dragons, Ukrainian IronbelliesโEastern Front." Corin perked her lips as her eyes stared at the back of Newt's head.
"I would've liked to hear about the dragon tales, Mr.Scamander."
"Really? It's much of an exciting adventure Cory, I didn't think it'd interest you." Her eyes lulled a bit as now he was being modest in not wanting to bother her with previous career choices.
But also he didn't want to share the fact that he was expelled from Hogwarts.
"Did witches fight in the war?"
"Oh...I was still in school." Corin said biting her lip as she hoped that the timeline was accurate enough for Newt not to question.
What was she going to say?
Oh, I was in a different time?
Just as Corin was about to mention that witches were just as capable of being the war as wizards, Newt's abrupt stop almost caused her to bump right into him.
Granted he was cautious of his as his arm made way to the space around her and proceeded to allow her to be in frontโOr in front for a moment as he spited a trail of jewelry, diamonds, earrings, rings and necklaces were scattered about until the trail lead down a store.
Corin was about to call out to him, that a jewelry store would be the place of interest, Newt backtracked at the fact that Sterling was acting as a display center piece.
It wasn't long before the Niffler was off, scurrying farther into the shop and away from Newt. "Finestra." He casted, causing the window's glass to shatter.
Leaving the zoologist to leap through and start rummaging through drawers and cupboards. As much as Corin wanted to help, she was withholding Roe from jumping in to aid as well.
And perhaps it was a bit too much like the shape of a rabbit for Corin to feel alright in letting him manage this on his own, thus left her standing at the window as a guard. Just incase the bugger decides to leave.
However in seeing Newt chase the Niffler up and onto a chandelier, it was a rather poor descion on the wizard's part as not even a moment later the damn thing fell to the ground. Shattering it into millions of pieces on the floor, and it wasn't the only thing that fell as Newt made one last ditch effort as both he and Sterling had climbed over a jewelry case that didn't support Scamander's weight at allโMaking it fall back and lean against the thin glass of the opposite window.
Corin didn't have enough time to reach for her wand as the glass began to break, resulting in a loud crash as either tumbled down over the broken glass.
It felt like it happened within mere seconds that the Niffler was already to the lamp post and either Newt and Jacob were dodging the collected jewlery Sterling had snatched, yet finally the little bugger was caught in a jelly where the broken window had once been.
Leaving Cory to snatch the fellow out of the Jelly and firmly place him into her coat beside Roe as well.
"One downโTwo to go." He says completely out of breath, but when the two wizards turn around from the jewelry shop they could see Jacob backing up to aline himself with his accomplices with his hands up.
The police cars had all come to a stop, and now that Corin looked at the damage as well as the countless necklaces lingering onto the two men. She couldn't help but feel awful for whoever owns the store they were standing in front of.
Newt, out of pure loyalty, found himself standing in front of Corin as he held his own hands up in record of surrender.
"They went that way officer," Jacob said, attempt to defuse the scene. But it was obvious, in every count were the men's pockets spilling out with the jewels.
The cock of a shotgun cause Corin to flinch her shoulders up, and she listened to the officers as her hands did manage upโBut the heads of both Sterling and Roe peeked out in curiosity.
"What the hell is that?" Of of the officers questioned, and Corin peeked to the left towards Jacob only see an actual Lion praying the streets of New York at this time of night.
While the police officers were in fear and in obvious destress, Newt managed to smirk. "You know, New York is considerably more interesting than I'd expected." He said, but when Corin didn't respond in any form of agreement he turned back towards herโOnly to see the daze she was in seeing a creature.
Perhaps one she's never seen before as well.
Before the police can look back, Newt grabs onto both Jacob and Corin before he disapparates.
It was a quick warp, and when it was over all Corin could hear was Newt frantically apologieising for not giving her much of a warning. But she smiled up towards and claimed that she was getting used to all the sporadic apparitions that it really wasn't bothering her all that much anymore.
However as they make a small pitstop to drop both Roe and Sterling into the case, one she returns to Newt's grasp before the trio set foot to Central Park.
Or they already arrived at central park, but it was the commotion occurring at the zoo that struck Newt as curious. Thus needed to be investigated.
As they were crossing the bridge, they were almost bowled over by a frantic Ostrich, who seemed to be running for it's life.
A low rumble confirmed Newt's thoughts as he tugs a piece of headgear from his jacket and offers it up to Jacob. "Put this on." He orders, and while the muggle questioned it, it was Corin who was starting to get the chills of all the animals that were going to be terrorizing the stress of muggle new york.
Could they defend themselves against a lion? Probably not.
"...Because your skull is susceptible to breakage under immense force." Newt said, and Corin gawked at how honest and blunt that statement was.
Scamander was the first to start running after the next loud rumble, but the sheer look of horror that followed Newt explanation was read clearly on Jacob's face.
And the two followed in pursuit after Newt.
"Absolutely batshite that man, running into danger with no possible plan." The muggle had trailed behind her in utter shock that a woman would have such a vulgar mouthโLittle did he know that the younger generation rocking in the seventies held little to no filter.
In running after the insanely mad zoologist, Corin did evendently consider that perhaps this was actually insane. It was close to midnightโScratch that, one in the morning. They were in central park, prepared to track down a Erumpent. And she felt her head starting to shake in disapproval as Newt continued to dress Jacob further in gear.
"Okay, if you justโUh, pop this on." Newt explained, and Corin took the opportunity with the suitcase being open to let Roe back into the safety of the exhibits so she could have both hands at the ready.
Jacob just allowed the wizard to put the outfit on him, much like a child would if they were being dressed by a parent. "Now, there's absolutely nothing for you to worry about." He cheered, which caused Corin to scratch her brow.
"Absolutely nothing? Are you sure?"
"YeahโHas anyone ever believed you when you told them not to worry?" Jacob piggy backed off of the witch to tease Newt, but the wizard hadn't seen it that way. He simply placed a comforting hand onto Corin's shoulder and smiled. Though his eyes didn't meet hers, instead it darted away and hid under the cover of his bushy hair.
"My Philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice." He repeated, or rather he repeated his wisdom to Corin. And while Newt let out a breathless smile, it hardly lasted long enough for her to commit to and really gather.
Instead the bloke picked up his case and they followed after him, managing to avoid the fallen debris of the brick building that the creature had taken down.
However the snort of the creature alerted them quiet easily, and Corin smiled to see the female.
"She's in season. She needs to mate." Corin's eyes had turned to Newt ready for an explanation, but then her face betrayed her in a furious blush to her cheeks.
Just the cold, it's just theโOh who the bloody hell am I kidding! She's not the only one!
The Erumpent in question is always described as a rhino like creature, with massive horns managing to protrude from the foreheadโbut in seeing the comparison to a normal Rhino to a Erumptent, Corin instantly realized that this is where Newt had gotten his Erumpent description.Right here and right now.
Corin closed her eyes in deep thought, trying to recall Newts entire exert on this beast.
Erumpent, M.O.M. Classification: XXXX
The Erumpent is a large grey African beast of great power. Weighting up to a tonne, the Erumpent may be mistaken for a rhinoceros at a distance. It has a thick hide that repels most charms and curses, a large, sharp horn upon its nose and a long, rope-like tail.
So how the hell were they meant to capture a beast that's skin protected it from magical forces?!
"Newt, we have to speed this upโThe climate might make her more than ill if she stays out any longer." The fellow had stopped his next action as he turned to look at her, pure disbelief flashed over his face as he hardly knew how to respond.
"Y-you know about Erumpents?" She had been caught red handed, and this time it had been her own fault.
"Y-yeah, they're on the 'close to extinct' list, because the males explode afterโMerlin. Right, when we put her back into the case, we need to get her warmed up quickly." She said, trying to revert the conversation back towards the beast itself.
Newt had mindlessly taken the tiny vial of liquid out and spilled a little more than he wanted to in the course of his chat with Corin. But it was damning to think of what else this witch knew.
What else was stored away.
The pungent smell had ceased any conversation between them to continue as she placed her coat's neckline over her nose, her eyes starting to burn a bit.
"It's Erumpent muskโShe's mad for it."
Corin hummed and turned away, it was a rather violent invasion in her nose. Sweet goodness!
While Jacob and Corin stayed at the sidelines, Newt had propped the suitcase directly across from where the Erumpent was making her advances on the Rhino.
However Corin could hardly prepared herself when she heard Newt immitate the sound of a male Erumpent. She had been caught so off guard she slapped her hand over her mouth and tried to imagine anything else.
But there was no denying that Newton Scamander was performing the mating ritual, which involving a serious of grunts, wiggles and Corin's personal favorite...The rolls and groansโAll in which to gain the female's attention.
"Alright, perhaps it does work." Corin whispered, but she had been completely out of breath for a different reason.
The Erumpent however, turned away from the creature it had targeted prior and now focused on Newt entirety. They face each other, circling round and acting just a strange as the former.
But she had been hypnotized, or so says her glowing orange horn.
"Good girlโCome onโInto the case..." A smile graced the witch's lips, but the scent evaded her nose againโCausing her to turn to her left and see that Jacob had his own interest in the vial that Newt used.
As he was in the midst of doing so, something had been carried in the wind to cause a knock for the muggle to drop the vial onto the both of them...Spilling the rest of the musk.
The Erumpent had taken a large breath, and the new and more powerful aroma that sparked in between the other two caused her to forget about Newt.
As Jacob was off antagonizing a seal who had been at fault for this, Corin stood directly in contact with a readying female preparing to charge.
"Jacob. We need to goโ" Corin issued, taking hold of the muggle and disparenting off towards the front entrance.
"Newt! I have a plan! Head to the lake!" Corin yelled, and off the two were. Running the rest of the way to gain the Erumpent's proper attention now that they needed to use it to their advantage.
In one spell, Corin had destroyed the scent from Jacob and the armor...And she directed him to get to safety before disapparenting once again towards the lack.
Another twirl allowed her boots to shift into ice skates, and after a second of imbalance. Corin began to disperse her weight upon either leg, and skates across the perimeter. And the beast didn't hesitate to skid across the frozen lake in a chaotic motion. The pattern Corin was going for couldn't last much longer, she was gaining rather quicklyโAnd when Corin had lost her balance and fell down, she let out a rather painful groan, losing her wand in the process a decent bit away from her position.
And Merlin, nothing was more horrifying than seeing a horny Erumpent charging at full speed on a slippery surface.
"NEWT!" Corin said as she covered her face with her opposite arm, as no spell she could cast would defend against this beast if she even had her wand close to her.
However beast had just let out a rather long lick, but it was intercepted as Newt had indeed come to her aidโBut it was cut close, his suitcase managing to enclose her just in the nick of time.
But to save Corin from the collision of the case and Corin's face, Newt dropped itโLeaving the only things to tumble to be himself and her.
And it was surely lighter, in Corin's perspective, than the bulky luggage. And better yet...Newt had found himself draped over the witch, as he hadn't any time to really take into consideration on how they would end up.
The two were breathing heavily, and while the pain in Corin's wrist was screaming at her. So was her heart, it was beating so rapidly in her ear as she was lost in a daze.
"Cutting it close Mr.Scamander?" She teased, but it broke the trans Newt had found himself in. That this compromising position between the two had awaken something in him, but it caused him to scramble off herโThrowing dozens of apologies to help her.
However when his hands locked onto her hand and wrist, she hissed. "Sorry...Sorry." He repeated, as though it had been his fault. Again.
"It's alright, I slipped at the end. No worries. I'll fix it in a bit." She explained after rising to sit up and testing it herself. Her eyes drifted off to her wand, but it and the suitcase had been both picked up by Jacob as he came closer.
Though it did take a moment or two extra, considering they were all still on the frozen lake.
"Are you alright, Mr.Kowalski?" Newt asked politely, clearly worried for his two partners on this mission and the muggle chuckled. "Call me Jacob." He said with a grin, offering up his suitcase.
The two had been rather adorable in terms of being rowdy boys, Corin's witnessed that so many times in HogwartsโBut seeing it in grown men was rather adorable that she laughed in getting up.
But it was hardly a moment on her own as either of them aided her, though she skated away and continued to laugh at the two hauling the other in trying to get to the side.
