16 - What Happened In Five Years

Day 5, Friday

Cas, Luci and Michael had stayed awake through the night keeping Sam and Dean warm. Sam was definitely in danger of hypothermia, and they'd stayed by his side throughout the night making sure he didn't fall asleep until he was warmer and then keeping him warm.

Right now Cas was asleep while Michael and Luci were watching over the Winchester's, who had also fallen asleep in the night.

Gabriel hadn't returned...they noticed but were too focused on getting the others warm. Gabe wasn't stupid enough to get himself killed out in the cold.

Sam woke up slowly, blinking his eyes open to the world around him. He felt warm, which was different from the last thing he could remember...which was darkness and cold. Nothing else.

He sat up slowly, and saw Michael looking over at him.

"How are you feeling?" Michael asked.

"I've been better," Sam said. "What happened?"

"The ice broke," Michael said. "You fell in and didn't come back up. Dean jumped in and dragged you to the surface."

Sam looked down, remembering. "The skates weighed me down," he said. "I tried..." He looked around the room, seeing Cas asleep next to Dean, Luci not paying much attention and Michael. "Where's Gabriel?"

"He ran off after you fell in," Michael said. "I think he freaked out at seeing you almost die..."

"I almost died?"

"Well you could've, it was a possibility. We haven't seen him since."

"What?! Is he okay?!"

Michael sighed. "We don't know...we were too busy trying to get you two warm to look for him."

"He's not an idiot, he'll be in one of the other cabins," Luci said.

"But you don't know for sure," Sam said, standing up. He walked over to his room to get his jacket.

"Where are you going?" Michael asked.

"I'm going to find him," Sam muttered. "He shouldn't be left alone right now, he'll be blaming himself."

He walked out of the front door of the cabin, looking up at the sky. It was pretty early in the morning, the sun having just risen. Sam looked at the many cabins and sighed.

So he started going through all of them. And almost all of them were empty. There was no sign of anyone having being in there for half a year.

Then there was one. Snow littered the ground around the door, signs that it had been opened recently. Sam walked in quietly, glancing around. The cabin was almost identical to theirs, so he walked into this ones equivalent of him and Gabe's room.

Curled up on one of the beds was Gabriel. He was awake but not moving.

"Gabriel?" Sam said softly, and Gabe jumped up, looking at Sam.

"Sam..." Gabe said. "You're okay, thank god you're okay." He looked almost scared...

"Why'd you run away?" Sam asked, moving over to sit beside Gabe on the bed. Gabe shied away from him almost.

"I couldn't...I couldn't bare to see what would happen if you weren't okay," Gabe whispered. "I...stood there and did nothing, I didn't even try and help, I couldn't, I was frozen..."

"It's okay, you were in shock," Sam said, putting a hand on Gabe's shoulder. Gabe flinched around from the touch and Sam tried to hide the hurt in his expression.

"It's my fault," Gabe muttered.

"How in the world was that your fault? You didn't crack the ice."

"I led you over there," Gabe said. "And then I left you there, I let go of your hand and moved away, if I had been closer, if I had stayed with you, I could've helped, I could've stopped you from falling..."

"The ice was too thin," Sam said. "It was going to break. And I'm okay, just got a little bit cold okay?"

"It could've been so much worse," Gabe said. "You could've—" His voice broke and he stopped talking.

"Gabriel," Sam said softly. "What's happened has happened. I'm okay, I wasn't hurt."

"But you could've been and it would've been my fault," Gabe said quietly.

"Why do you do that?" Sam asked. "You immediately put the blame on yourself for someone near you getting hurt..."

Gabriel didn't reply, looking at the bed to avoid eye contact.

"Gabe, tell me..."

"Five years Sam," Gabe said quietly, so quietly Sam almost didn't hear. "A lot happened in five years..."

"And what exactly happened?" Sam asked. Gabe sighed.

"You know I always pranked people," Gabe said. "I loved to, it was just my thing...after the summer, I...well I guess I kind of just used that as a distraction." He paused. "People...people got hurt."

"How?" Sam asked softly. "What did you do?"

Gabe scoffed. "What didn't I do? More than once someone feel down the stairs and broke a bone, some people got concussed, others got severe burns...I always described it as a prank gone wrong but..."

"You meant for that to happen..." Sam said slowly.

"I mean, I never wanted to hurt people," Gabe said. "But that's just what the nature of the pranks were...I was too focused on distracting myself to notice what I was doing."

"Now you think it's your fault if someone gets hurt?" Sam asked. "Because you hurt people before?"

Gabe nodded. "It's not just that...some guy pissed me off, he was giving me crap about being gay. So I cut his brake lines."

"Oh no Gabe...what happened?"

"Car crash, obviously," Gabe said. "The guy nearly died. That was kind of my wake up call, I realized what I'd been doing then..."

"You're scared of hurting me without realizing it," Sam realized.

"You always say that I won't but you never knew what I'd done," Gabe said, his voice shaky and quiet.

"Gabe," Sam said quietly, putting his hand on Gabe's cheek. "I didn't say that because I didn't know you'd hurt people in the past. I said that because I trust you not to."

"Why would you trust me?" Gabe said, looking up at Sam with wide, tear filled eyes. "After what I did to those people..."

"You care about me right?" Sam asked and Gabe nodded. "You care, so you would never willingly hurt me. If you unwillingly hurt me it will have been an accident and it won't be your fault."

"Those pranks weren't an accident," Gabe muttered.

"You were angry," Sam said. "At losing me I guess...are you still angry?"

"No," Gabe whispered. "I'm scared..."

"Everyone's a little scared of something," Sam said. "Gabriel I trust you okay? I trust you with my life. Because you won't hurt me, you care about me too much to hurt me..." Sam paused and chuckled suddenly.

"What?" Gabe asked, tilting his head.

"I just remembered something I said once," Sam said, smiling. "Sometimes caring is all it takes to make someone fall in love." Gabe smiled.

"I remember that..." he said.

"Gabriel," Sam said quietly. "You can't change what's happened. But you can let it stop affecting you. I trust you not to hurt me, and I love you too much to let you go over a little bit of fear."

Gabe went quiet for a moment. "You..."

"Yes Gabriel I love you okay?"

Gabriel blinked at Sam before jumping forwards and wrapping his arms tight around Sam, burying his head against Sam's shoulder.

"I love you too Sammy," Gabe said quietly. "I...I won't hurt you, I promise."

"Promise me you'll never blame yourself," Sam said. Gabe didn't say anything. "Gabriel, promise me."

"I promise," Gabe said. He pulled away slightly from the hug to look into Sam's eyes. "I'm sorry I ran."

"It's okay," Sam said, smiling. "Most people do when they're afraid." Gabe smiled softly, before leaning in to kiss Sam gently.

"Thank you Sammy," he said softly. "For staying even after I told you what I did..."

"You're going to have to try harder than that to get rid of me," Sam said with a teasing smile. Gabe chuckled before leaning in to kiss Sam again.

~~

"Sam's been gone a while," Michael noted.

"He probably found Gabriel," Luci said. "And then they probably made up. And now they're probably making out."

"Did not need to hear that the moment I woke up," Dean muttered, sitting up. Cas's eyes lit up and he immediately hugged Dean.

"You're okay," Cas said.

"Yeah," Dean said. "Sam had it worse than me though...wait where's Sam?" His eyes went wide. "Where's Sammy?!"

"He's okay," Luci said. "He went out to look for Gabriel."

"Everyone's okay," Cas said. "Gabe probably talked things out with Sam. They'll be better from now on."

"Goal achieved," Luci said, smiling. "We can leave the camp now."

"What no," Michael said. "You have two ships Luci."

"But they seem fine?" Luci said, looking over at Destiel.

Michael rolled his eyes. "We're staying until Christmas, you know the author planned this out."

"Fiiine," Luci said.

"Who is the author?" Dean whispered to Cas.

"I think they're a figment of Luci's imagination," Cas said, tilting his head.

"Right then..." Dean said slowly.

The door to the cabin opened suddenly and Sam walked in, closely followed by Gabriel. And they were holding hands.

"Are you feeling better Gabriel?" Cas asked, watching carefully. Gabe nodded, smiling. Him and Sam sat down in front of the fireplace, Gabe leaning against Sam.

"So tomorrow's Christmas eve," Gabe said. "Did you guys get me presents?"

"Eh I'll just snap something into existence," Luci said, shrugging. Gabe looked offended.

Cas chuckled. "I got you something Gabriel."

"Thank you Cassie, you're my favourite brother," Gabe said.

"Hey I got you something too," Michael muttered.

"Oh right, don't worry Michael you'll always be my favourite."

"He's not even your brother!" Luci yelled. Gabe just laughed, leaning closer against Sam. Things were definitely starting to look up for all of them...
