Chapter 9

Adrien's insides knotted up when he saw the cloaked figure throw her hood back. It was the woman who had visited him in the hospital. Madame Gisela.

"You're not my mom," he said, a cutting edge to his tone.

"Oh, but I am, whether you like it or not. Does this mean you remember, son?"

Adrien searched his memories, trying to find anything new to no avail. He was sure he'd know if he got them back.

"No," he mumbled, "but I know that this isn't right. There's stuff I haven't been told, and I'm not your son!" The anger in his tone shocked him, and it was like someone deep inside him had said those words. The boy he used to be.

"I see you're as stubborn as ever, such a disappointment."

"So you're saying I was stubborn before all of this?"

"Oh yes. You were also obnoxious and painfully resistant to listening to me, which is what brought us into this situation in the first place."

He tried to not let her words get to him, but he could feel the truth radiating off of her. Could his stubborn nature be what got him in a coma in the first place?

"I need answers, real answers. There's something off about this whole place. There's something that's being hidden from me and I'm sick of it."

"Give me the swans and I'll bring you to her."

His memory darted to the two black pendants sitting in his nightstand, but he wasn't buying it. "What swans?" He questioned, trying to get her to slip some answers.

"You know exactly what I'm talking about, they're in your nightstand. Give them to me and I'll bring you to her."

"How did you—"

"That's not important. What's important is that you bring them to me. Then, I'll give you answers."

The offer was tempting, he had to admit. Why did it seem like he was missing something? The pendants must be important, so he decided to keep his cards, even though he didn't know how the game worked.

"I'm not giving them to you! Bring me to her!"

"Ah, so you have seen her!"

"Just tell me—"

Madame Gisela swiftly made her way over to him, "There will be none of that, I'm done with arguing with your stubborn face." He grabbed his wrist tightly and held up some sort of crystal that cast a beam of light. Before he could even think to ask what was going on he was standing somewhere else entirely. They were in a moist, dark cave lit only by strange crystals that gave a blue hue. There was something ominous about it that gave him the creeps.

"WHAT THE HE—" Adrien's yell was cut off by Madame Gisela clamping his mouth with her hand.

"Shush! Do as I say, and no one gets hurt." Adrien's eyes went wide, now more fully understanding the circumstances. "I will not let go until you tell me you understand how serious I am."

Adrien tried to say "How can I speak if you're covering my mouth" but it came out more like "hocanispeakwifyourhanonmymouv?"

Madame Gisela reluctantly removed her hand. "Ah, that's better! It's pretty hard to talk when your mouth is being forcibly shut, you know. Also, where the heck are we? Because just a few seconds ago—" She signaled for him to be quiet and he reluctantly obeyed.

"I need you to wear this," she whispered, pulling out a hooded black robe identical to the one she was wearing.

"Why?"

"Just do it, son!" He flinched at the last word, though he still put it on. The hood covered his entire face.

"You're going to go that way," she whispered, pointing to the darkest side of the cavern, "and you're going to find her. Do not remove your hood or speak unless directed. Ruy will give you further instructions. And son," she said, turning his face to face hers, "if you disobey me, there will be consequences and they will be severe."

On that gleeful note she shoved him into the overwhelming darkness. The glowing stones were still there, but it was still so dark that he could hardly see. What else could he do other than go?

He walked. And walked. And walked. The cavern showed no sign of stopping. To keep his mind busy he decided to count his steps. When he got to step 3,897 the coldness settled in. It was like all the warmth had been drained from his body and he fought to keep going.

On step 4,989 the voices came. Rustling and murmurs filled the cavern. Adrien had no idea where they came from but he picked up his pace, heart beating out of his chest. What if this whole thing was just a ruse to trap him?

That's when he heard screams. Torture screams. That's when he broke out into a sprint. It wasn't far now.

On step 5,143 the lights brightened and he could see a heavy wooden door on the side. He threw it open, needing to stop this girl from being tortured. He needed her to be ok more than anything in the world in that moment. She was his mission.

The moment he stepped in her eyes went straight to him and his heart did a double backflip. Foster.

He waited for some kind of recognition, any kind of indication that he was doing the right thing, but her stare was blank. She didn't recognize him because of the huge cloak Madame Gisela made him wear.

That's when he noticed the man he assumed was Ruy in the room, holding some kind of strange weapon with a crescent shaped blade. He was wearing a cloak identical to his, with the hood pulled all the way up. The wounds on Foster's skin were awful and painful looking, but the thing that caught his eye was the contraption strapped to her head.

Adrien didn't think. He didn't think about the consequences. All he knew was that he needed to get her safe. He knew that his so called "mom" might kill him. He knew he would be hurt, but none of that mattered. So he punched Ruy in the gut and took the weapon from his hands, throwing it far away from either of them. He tried to pry the machine off of her head but some kind of translucent bubble formed around her body, making it impossible to touch her.

"I see you haven't changed," Ruy said in a rough voice.

"Why do people keep saying that? I don't know who I used to be."

Foster's beautiful brown eyes went huge, and she tried to say something but couldn't because of the gag in her mouth. She struggled against the machine to no avail. She was weakened from it and her wounds, he could tell.

"Ah, so the moonlark knows you're here now. If only she could save you and her friends like she normally does. Now it looks like you'll be trying to save her, without any knowledge of who she is or who I am or who you are. So tell me, who do you think has the advantage?"

Adrien had to admit, his chances did look very slim. But he had to settle one thing with this dude before he took him on.

"I do know who I am. I'm Adrien Agreste, and I'm a model and a superhero. I don't remember anything, but that's who I am."

Ruy stood there for a second, staring Adrien down. "If only you knew how wrong that all is."

Adrien stood there a moment, trying to figure out what he meant. "You mean everyone lied to me? You're saying I'm not Adrien Agreste?"

Adrien could tell he was smiling behind his hood, but he said nothing.

That's when he snapped. He yanked off a piece of the machine on Foster's head and thrust it at Ruy with all of his strength when he saw the bubble disappear. He thoroughly regretted that decision when he made another one of those translucent bubbles around himself and the machine piece came hurdling back at him with ten times as much power. It managed to nail him right in the groin, making him yelp a few times in pain. "Gahhh! My future children!"

"You'll be strong when you complete your transformation, very strong. Or at least, that's what your mommy says. Clearly you haven't gotten there yet. Of course, you're here trying to impress your little girlfriend like alw—"

"SHUT UP!"

"There he is! I knew you had a little bit of him left in you! I figured bringing up your constant attempts to impress the moonlark would spark a reaction."

"At least I'm not torturing people!"

"Whether you like it or not, I have the advantage here. If I wanted you dead you'd be dead, but your mother told me I wasn't allowed to kill you. She never said anything against hurting you, and I will gladly do so. Surrender and I will not hurt you."

Adrien turned around to see Foster staring at him, nodding her head. He threw back his hood, there was no need for it now. Now that he wasn't looking through the thinned patches of fabric, he could see her more clearly. Her eyes were a mix of relief and dread, and she looked sickly and pale and sweaty. She lifted her hand as high as her restraints would allow, nodding at him to take it. She flinched from the pain of her wounds when he did, but her hand felt so familiar. He stared into her warm eyes, begging to stay with her. She needed his help. He took the gag off of her allowing her to speak, but whatever she was about to say turned into a scream as the man struck him with that strange weapon. He yelled in pain, feeling awful, for Foster had at least 10 marks on her arms.

"Nooooo! Hurt me instead!" Foster choked, tears streaming down her face.

"Uhh, do you see yourself? You're hurt far too much already."

"I've been hurt much worse." Adrien doubted that as he glanced at her bleeding wounds and clammy skin.

"Maybe, but I can take it." His voice was strong, but what they saw the man do after that surprised both of them. He was laughing. Like, bent-over-clutching-his-stomach wheezing.

"You guys..." he laughed, "your mom was right about you being so....." he couldn't finish as he continued wheezing.

Adrien took the chance and tried to take her restraints off as fast as possible, ignoring the pain that shot up his arm as he moved it. Her hands were free and they pulled off the contraption together. All they needed to do was take Ruy down.

Adrien didn't need to do anything, Ruy was still wheezing and the girl seemed to have it covered as a pink lightning bolt shot out of her head. Adrien screamed, not knowing what was going on, but the man writhed in pain on the ground. After a few moments she stopped, looking faint as ever. The man was still on the ground and Adrien wondered if that meant he was dead. He didn't have time to decide as he saw how blank Foster looked. She fell over and Adrien was there to catch her. He shifted her so he was carrying her bridal style, worry overpowering all of his other emotions as he ran out the heavy wooden door, running in the opposite direction from which he came. So many questions were brewing in his mind, but he'd figure it out later. Right now all that mattered was getting Foster to safety.

First he heard rustling, and he ran a little faster. The rustles turned into yelling from something he didn't want to know as he ran as fast as he possibly could, all the while clinging to the unconscious girl in his arms, begging her to stay with him.

A/N: Hey guys! I know I haven't updated in a while so I decided I'd write my longest chapter yet! I know there are major plot holes with Ruy especially in this chapter but other than that I hope you guys liked it!
