Chapter 12
The first thing Adrien noticed when he woke up was a set of big brown eyes, staring right back at him from only a few inches away. Then everything came rushing back to him. The fight with Ruy. The strange man in the hospital. His mom. Foster.
She smiled at him and he blushed when he realized how close they were. That's what happens when you share a bed with someone you hardly know...
"Good, you're awake. I didn't want to wake you," Foster said.
"How long have you been awake?"
"Not long, my body seriously needed the rest after yesterday, and clearly yours did too." With that memories of sprinting through a pitch black hallway while carrying Foster enveloped his thoughts. He would never forget the adrenaline that coursed through his veins, and the terror and desperation that clouded him in that moment. Or the fact that he'd somehow teleported, which he still needed to figure out...
Foster sat up, examining her cleaned wounds. "You did a good job, you know. I don't think this will even leave a scar."
Adrien sat up next to her, "I didn't actually do that, Marinette did."
"Marinette? Who's she?"
"She's... a friend, I think. It's complicated..."
Foster raised an eyebrow before laughing. "I guess everything about this is complicated, isn't it?"
"Yeah... about that, you seem to know more than I do, so could you maybe explain everything that's happened?"
"I mean, it'll take all day, but... I need you back." Her voice cracked and she grabbed his hand, letting their fingers twine as she looked into his eyes.
"Let's start with something simple. Is my name really Adrien?"
"That's the name they gave you, huh?"
"Well, people seem to know me, so maybe I look like whoever Adrien is." The words hurt him a little more than he'd like to admit. Adrien was the only part of him he had started to know, and it was all fake.
Foster took a deep breath. "Well, I suppose I'll tell you my name first. Telling you your name could trigger something, and I'd prefer to save that until a bit later. My name is Sophie Foster."
"Sophie Foster..." Adrien repeated, the name strangely familiar on his tongue. "But I call you Foster, don't I? That was the one thing I was sure of."
Sophie smiled, "Yes, you call me Foster. You have no idea how much I've missed that..." she cleared her throat, "Anyways, back to us. We're elves and have powers-"
"Is that why I was able to teleport?"
"Yeah- wait, what? You teleported?" Sophie looked dumbfounded and it worried Adrien that it wasn't normal.
"When you were unconscious, I ran down a dark corridor carrying you and I was running so fast and all of a sudden this crack appeared-"
"And you went straight through it to the hospital?"
"Yeah, so that was me, not you?"
"No, I can also teleport but..." Sophie's eyes went wide, "maybe that's your new ability! We're both teleporters! It's... not what I expected, but with Gisela it could be anything-"
"Hold up, you're telling me we have abilities? What's that supposed to mean?"
Sophie sighed. "This is going to take a long time, are you sure you're up for it?"
"You know it, Foster!"
"Ugh, I don't know how Fitz was able to do this..."
"Who's Fitz?"
"Not important right now. Well, actually, it is. He's your best friend."
Adrien sat there dumbfounded for a moment. "Yeah... let's start this from the beginning."
And so Sophie and Adrien sat there in bed for a while as she told him all she knew about the Lost Cities and elves and abilities and the Black Swan and the Neverseen. Something about it all was familiar, but his mind still stayed blank. He still didn't have any memories back.
Then she started talking about his family.
"Your dad... he's terrible," she started, "he verbally abused you and he's such a snob. Your mom... she's evil. She's with the Neverseen. She manipulated you your whole life and she's the reason you went into a coma in the first place."
"What a family I've got then!"
"It's... a sore subject. For me and for you."
"I see..." they sat in awkward silence for a little bit, neither of them sure what to say. Eventually Adrien remembered something. "You still haven't told me my name, Foster."
She sat there a moment before turning to look him in the eyes. She grabbed both of his hands and as he stared into her eyes he felt himself getting lost. He wanted to let the deep pools of amber carry him away to a place he'd be safe forever.
She hesitated a moment more, before leaning a little closer. "Your name isn't Adrien, I don't know where that came from. You're Keefe. Keefe Sencen." Time seemed to stop as the name swirled around in his darkened mind.
Keefe.
Keefe.
KEEFE!
The sound of Sophie shouting his name faded away as the darkness took over, threatening to overcome him.
