Chapter 3: Pt 8
I let out a small sigh. This was it. The beginning of our third trial.
"Well then, let's not waste any time then. I've collected the most crucial evidence from the crime scene and have brought them out to see how we can connect them to our culprit." Near explained. He reached into the box and first pulled out a wooden baseball bat. The blood stain at the top made me cringe.
"I believe we should discuss this first." he stated. "Hold on, that baseball bat looks familiar. Wasn't that in the storage closet in the gym?" Mello asked. "It must be. I don't recall there being any other bat within the building, not even in the weapons trophy case." Kanato replied.
"Okay, so the culprit brought a baseball bat to the third floor to attack Rin, right? When would they have done that?" Kokichi asked. "I'm not sure. Sometime before 4, cause that's when I left Rin to go rest in my room." Ulric replied.
"Still sticking to that lie, are ya? Come on, you were the last one in there! You must've been the one who killed him!" Junko snapped. Ulric growled, slamming a fist down onto the court stand.
"Dammit, I keep telling you I didn't do it! I'm not lying!" he snapped. "Oh yeah? How do we know that?! Aren't you the one with long claws here, pal? And there were plenty of scratches in that room. And a wolf your size could've easily made those cracks in the wall." Junko stated. "Ugh, shut the hell up!" Ulric growled.
"Both of you be quiet! We're not going to get anywhere by arguing." Mello stated firmly.
"Mello is correct, we must move on. Violet, you had collected everyone's alibis, correct? Do they all seem liable?" Near asked me. I looked away, a hand on my chest.
"Well, truth be told, not all of them were. Crona and Ulric claim they were in their rooms, and Kanato states he was in the garden. However, none of them had any witnesses to prove these claims. Junko and Magane both said they were with each other, but they told different stories. Magane claimed they were in the kitchen, while Junko claimed they were in the karaoke room." I replied.
Junko and Magane blinked, looked to each other in surprise before remaining silent. "I see, that is oddly suspicious~ Nee-heehee, just what are you two girls cooking up?" Kokichi asked.
"You're one to talk, Kokichi. You didn't even bother to give us an alibi. I saw you simply run away before you were even given the chance to speak." Kanato stated, narrowing his eyes on the boy. Kokichi only chuckled, placing his hands at the back of his neck. "Oh yeah, I never did tell ya, huh? Whelp, I guess I can say it now. I just went to the game room to play some video games." he explained.
"And you're telling the truth?" Amaimon asked. "Nee-heehee, who knows~?" Kokichi replied. I sighed.
"This is all sorts of confusing...." I muttered. "I see, so its entirely possible that everyone that doesn't have a liable alibi is a suspect. They could've went into the gym and taken it to the third floor to attack Rin." Near replied.
"So that leaves Kanato, Magane, Junko, Ulric, and Kokichi." Amaimon said. I sighed, looking at each one of the listed suspects, especially Junko. Hearing how she spoke so passionately about despair earlier, it makes me wonder what she could've done. But....that look on her face when I expressed what I thought was the ultimate despair. It looked so shocked....and somewhat startled.
"So, in any case, someone used that bat to attack Rin, right? There was an injury on the back of his head and there's blood on the bat. So whoever had planned to attack him got at least that far." Mello said.
"Do you think it was the murder weapon?" Crona asked. "Doubt it. Otherwise, why bother stabbing him with that giant metal bar?" Ragnarok stated, popping out from behind Crona. "True. I examined the wound myself. While it could've been very fatal to any human, Rin was a demon, so his body could probably withstand much more damage then one swing." Near stated.
"But then, if that was the case, why wouldn't Rin fight back? Or defend himself? If he could, couldn't he have been the one to kill someone?" Ulric said.
"That is true, huh? What was Rin thinking? I wonder, I wonder...." Magane replied, looking up as she began to think. "Perhaps another piece of evidence will reveal more." Near replied. He knelt down, and dug into the box, then pulled out two things; a black and white tie, and a small black bear hair clip.
"These were found as well. I assume they belong to the culprit." Near replied. "Oh okay, so whoever wheres those is the culprit?" Amaimon said.
"That would make sense. Unless Rin somehow has a fancy to wearing girly stuff like that." Kokichi stated. Mello perked up. "Wait, girly stuff..." Mello slowly moved his gaze across the room, where Junko and Magane stood. Both of them had blank expressions on their faces.
"The only two girls with suspicious alibis....are you two." Mello stated. That made everyone shift their attention to the two girls. Monokuma tilted his head to the side. "Ooooh, one of the girls, huh? This should be juicy!" he stated.
"Do either of you have an explanation as of why your alibis don't connect even though you both claim to be with each other?" Near asked. "Good questions," Junko stated, crossing her arms and looking to Magane, "care to explain, Magane?"
"Eh? Atashi wa? (Me?) Chiga, chiga. (You're wrong, you're wrong.) You're the one that has some explaining to do, Junko. We were definitely in the kitchen together, remember?" Magane stated, a smile on her face. I looked at Magane closely as she stared at Junko. She looked....expectant. Like she was waiting for something.
"Huh? You idiot, what are you-"
"Junko, hold on a sec." I said, stopping her mid sentence. That made Magane shoot a sharp glare at me, but I looked back at her.
"Magane, its very possible she could be lying to you. If you two really were at the kitchen, maybe she left at some point to do something. Did she leave the kitchen at any time?" I asked. "No, no! I'm telling you, we were baking in the kitchen together!" Magane stated, slamming her hands down onto the court stand.
"Are you that stupid, Magane?! I'm telling you, we went to the karaoke room!" Junko stated.
"Oh my god, this is starting to piss me off!" Mello snapped, placing a hand on his forehead. "I dunno, I think its kinda funny to see a cat fight like this! Nee-heehee, I don't want it to stop!" Kokichi stated. "Well I do, so I shall put an end to this. That tie and that hair clip most definitely belong to Junko." Kanato stated. This made the blonde girl shoot a glare at the vampire boy.
"What the hell are you talking about?" she asked in a low voice. Magane suddenly snapped her eyes towards Kanato, eyes wide.
"Kokichi caught onto it before we even had the trial, remember? He said you looked different today. And now we know why," Kanato pointed at her, "notice she isn't wearing her usual tie or hair clip." we all looked to Junko....and he was right. She wasn't wearing her tie, or her black hair clip. That's what was different about her.
"Am I wrong, Junko Enoshima?" Kanato asked. Junko was silent, looking away for a moment. A shadow cast over her eyes as silence held on. Magane's eyes widened and she glared at Kanato.
"Chiga! Chiga! T-Those aren't her's!" she stated. "Oh? And how so? She's the only one that wears a tie and hair clip such as these, correct? So why else wouldn't she wear them....unless she left them at the crime scene after she killed Rin." Kanato stated.
"Urusai! I don't believe it! Those aren't Junko's!" Magane stated. I looked at Magane surprised. "Magane." I said. Magane clenched her fists tightly, and bit her lip nervously. For the first time ever....she seemed scared. "Junko wasn't near the crime scene, remember?! She was with me in the kitchen! Someone must've planted those at the crime scene! Yeah, they're framing her!" Magane stated,
"I dunno, Magane. Junko is one of the biggest criminals among us, isn't she? So we can't just turn a blind eye to her. Especially is there's evidence that points to her." Kokichi replied.
"Urusai! Usoda! (That's a lie!) Usoda! Usoda-"
Magane was interrupted by a sudden burst of laughter, making all of us flinch. We all turned to the source....seeing Junko had her head thrown back, and was laughing at the top of her lungs.
"What the....Junko?" Crona said. "Holy shit, what's gotten into her?!" Ragnarok exclaimed.
"Hahahahaha! Oh man, oh geez, I didn't think you guys would figure it all out so quickly. These class trials usually take forever to see who the culprit is. But damn, you guys figured it out easily." Junko stated, wearing a large grin. I looked at her with wide eyes. What was she saying? "Junko...is that a confession?" I asked.
"Come on! What else would it be, you stupid bitch?! Course it was a confession! I killed the son of Satan himself!" Junko declared, hands on her hips while she wore a prideful expression. Everyone looked at her with wide eyes, however....there was no shock upon anyone's expressions. All except for Magane.
"....C-Chiga. Chiga! Junko, don't say that stuff! We were at the kitchen, remember?" she tried saying, a nervous smile on her face. It was so bizarre. Magane never lost her cool, and always seemed so full of energy. But now she looked like a nervous wreck.
"Dammit Magane, enough with your crappy lies." Junko stated deadpanned. Magane flinched, then looked away in silence.
"Look, it went down like this; I asked Magane if we could go up to the karaoke room so we could sing for a bit. I had already stashed the baseball bat in that room, so while we were up there, I told her I needed to use the bathroom. While I was gone, I snuck into roller coaster room and attacked Rin. Sucky thing was, one swing wasn't enough to kill the bastard, and he attacked me. He had kicked me into the wall, then ripped off one of the metal bars from the roller coaster room with his brute strength. However, just as he lunged it at me, I dodged it and managed to thrust use his weapon against him....and before you know it, the bastard was dead." Junko explained.
There was a moment of silence. I was especially shocked. I barely had any time to recollect Junko's story and make sense of it.
"....that would explain the final clue." Near stated. I looked to him surprised. "What?" I said. "That would explain the final clue. It was the metal bar that kept Rin on the ceiling. There was also a ladder in that room as well, which I assume the culprit used to place Rin on the ceiling." Near stated.
"Yeah, he wanted us to bring it, but it was way too heavy to carry." Ulric stated.
"But...I don't understand. Junko, you did you know that Ulric was gonna be there too?" Crona asked. "Nope, not a clue. He's lucky he left when he did, because I was more then ready to kill him too if he got in my way." Junko stated. Ulric looked at her with wide eyes.
"Wait what?! For real?!" he said.
"Totally. I mean, I can't have any witnesses, right? So you'd have to die too." Junko replied bluntly. "Why did you even stick Rin on the ceiling then? Wouldn't that have been just extra work?" Kanato asked. "Come on, it would've been boring to see just a body laying on the floor right? I had to mortify someone." Junko stated.
"....Magane," Near said, looking to the girl, who was dead silent, "did you know about this?"
"...." she didn't respond.
"Magane, why wouldn't you say anything?! Why wouldn't you speak up?!" Kanato demanded. I placed a hand on my chin. Why wouldn't she speak up? I know she's a liar, but still, I can't believe that Magane would go this far just to entertain herself. Kokichi, definitely, but I'm not sure about Magane.
....that's when it hit me.
"Magane....you didn't want Junko hurt, did you?" I asked. Magane perked up, and looked to me. Junko looked to me surprised as well. "It's just like what Crona did for Rena. You didn't want your best friend hurt, did you? So you came up with this lie so you could cover for her, didn't you?" I said. Crona's eyes widened.
"Whoa. I...I didn't even think about that." he said. Amaimon placed a hand on his chin. "Huh, I never thought about that. They are pretty close, aren't they?" he said. I blinked, looking to the demon. I had forgotten that Rin's brother was still here. He has been very quiet this entire time.
"....Tsudaiyo (That's right.) I didn't know right away. But, when we were investigating, and Amaimon found that tie and hair clip, I knew she had to of been the culprit. I...I didn't want my friend to get hurt. So, I tried to cover for her. But...that didn't work out." Magane stated. I sighed She's right, that didn't work out so well, cause Junko said they were in the karaoke room.
Wait....Junko said they were in karaoke room? She actually said that. Wait a minute, something doesn't add up here.
"Junko," I said, looking up at the girl seriously, "tell me. Just what was your motivation for killing Rin? Did he do anything to you? Make you mad? Try to hurt you? Or was this out of pure joy, which I doubt it was." I said. Junko looked at me, her expression morphing into a more serious expression. She didn't reply for a good minute before she let out a sigh.
"No, he didn't do anything....yet." I blinked.
"Yet?" Junko nodded.
"See, I've been wanting to rip someone for a while, ever since we got trapped in here. But I didn't want to get caught red handed just yet. However, a received an email on my Monopad this morning. It's message was plain and simple. Rin Okumura....is the traitor." Junko stated.
.....
"W-What?! You're kidding me?! Rin was the traitor?!" Ulric said. "Yes. That's what the email said." Junko stated. "No, I don't believe it....how can Rin be the traitor?" Crona said. "Masaka (No way)....so that's why you...." Magane murmured.
"Now hold on! That whole traitor bullshit was another motive from Monokuma, remember?! How do you know that email wasn't fake?!" Mello stated. "Because, the email came from Monokuma himself!" Junko stated. Monokuma, who somehow got a glass of wine, choked on his drink (even though I don't know how a robot could even drink wine).
"Whoa wait, say what?" he said.
"Yeah, maybe it was from Monokuma of all people, but there was no way I was gonna be killed by the fucking son of Satan! Screw that! I still have so many plans to bring such despair into my world! I can't give that up!" Junko stated, her face getting red as she shouted. I gave my head a slight shake before sighing.
I don't believe this. We have evidence that proves Junko is the culprit, and she even confessed with her motive in tack. So then....why doesn't any of this feel right?
"Whoa whoa whoa, back the fuck up!" Monokuma snapped, standing up from his little throne. We all looked to him. "Listen bitch, I have no idea what the hell you're talking about! I didn't send any damn email!" he stated. Junko's eyes suddenly widened. She ever so slowly turned to face the bear.
"....what? No, don't you lie to me! You definitely sent me that email!" she snapped.
"No, I didn't." Monokuma stated. "Yes, you did! You're fucking lying to me!" Junko shouted. "No, I'm not lying. I think I would remember emailing a message to you. It's too bad though, I should've been the one to to that-" Junko interrupted her.
"Stop lying! You definitely sent me that email! Who else would?! Not like your lackey could! I killed him! That's the only reason I was going to kill him! I couldn't let him hurt anyone else!" Junko screamed.
That made everyone look at her in shock. She froze, and place a hand over her mouth.
"Junko....?" Magane murmured.
