Chapter 1: Pt 6
"Alright, so we have a good idea as to why the knife was there. But I'm still wondering how a spinning top could kill someone. Even if it was made of metal, that thing was small. you can't exactly swing that thing around hoping for a sudden death." Ulric said. Suddenly, Monokuma growled.
"Dammit! I'm getting really sick of you guys calling that thing a spinning top! Look, if you must know, that weapon is called a bey!" he stated. We all looked at him surprised.
"A bey?" I said.
"Yes, it was from one of the universes. I plucked that thing from there and brought it here, but I never thought it would actually be used. But anyway, in that universe, beys would be used in fights, and would cause some crazy damage. We're talking scraping up the walls and floors and huge explosions!" Monokuma explained.
"Why are you telling us this right now? I didn't take you to be the helpful type." Kanato said.
"Well, I gotta make it fair for everyone, or the pieces will never be put together properly. And it wouldn't be fair if only one of you fools knew what a bey was and its universe." Monokuma said.
I perked up, my eyes widening.
"Wait, say that again? If only one of us knew?! Then, that would mean.....there's a high chance that the person who knew what a bey was is also our culprit. Otherwise, they wouldn't even know what a bey was, much less use it to murder someone." I said. "It's likely the culprit actually came from that same universe, since they appeared to know what a bey was capable of." Near said.
"That makes sense as to why the markings on the walls and floor were covered up. The culprit wanted to hide what the murder weapon was, because they knew that if anyone linked the bey with the universe they came from, they would be first up on the suspect list." Magane said.
"Nyow, if that's the case, then which one of us came from a world like that? I didn't read anything like that in the profiles on our tablets." Johannes said. Zack growled, slamming his fist down.
"Kusoga! Whoever the culprit is, just confess already! We can't stand here and keep twiddling our thumbs! So whoever killed the kid, admit it! I'm sick of the lies and the cover ups!" Zack stated.
"Bwahahahaha! Yeah, cause that'll work! If it was that easy, you guys probably wouldn't even be having a trial right now. Only way out is to figure this thing out to the very end." Monokuma stated.
"Unfortunately, he's correct. Let's discuss the case further, and perhaps we shall find more clues." Near said. Zack huffed, placing his hands on his hips and sighing, but nodded.
"Right, in that case, who has another theory? Anyone? Anyone?" Magane said, looking around the court room.
"So, we have an idea on how Nagito died, and what weapon killed him. We also have an idea of who the culprit might be, but nobody specifically as of yet. What else is there to look into?" I said. "Perhaps we should see how Nagito got to that storage closet in the first place. What prompted him to go there so late at night." Near said.
"Actually, we found a note in Nagito's hand. It said to meet him in that closet at nine. He probably went there to see him." Mello said. That made Crona's eyes widen.
"What? Wait....Nagito got a note?" he said. All eyes were on Crona. Kokichi raised a brow, a small smirk playing on his lips. "Hmm? Do you know something, Crona? Don't keep us waiting~" he said. Crona looked down nervously, rubbing his arm.
"Um...w-well, I..."
"Come on! Spit it out already! We don't have all day!" Kokichi whined. Crona flinched and nodded. "R-Right. W-Well, you see, I did see Nagito last night." he said. Rin perked up.
"Hold up, you saw Nagito? When?" he said. "It was eight. He came to my room, asking if I had a book I could give him to read. While he was searching for one....he spotted the note on my bed, and asked me about it." I said. Junko's eyes widened, and she immediately sent Crona a dirty look. "Now wait just a flipping second! You were the one that wrote Nagito the note?!" she snapped. Crona immediately took a step back, trembling.
"N-No! I-I didn't write it! I-I didn't even give it to him! It was given to me after we saw the motive videos. After we were done gaming in the game room, I went back to my room for some rest. While there, someone had slipped that note under my door, b-but I never read it. Instead, I left it on my night stand. But what Nagito came by for a book, he asked about the note. He asked what it said....but I was too scared to read what it said."
"Huh? You didn't read it?" Mello said.
"N-No. I didn't know how to deal with it, so I decided to leave it be. But anyway, after I gave him a book to read, he left. But, as soon as he left....I saw the note had disappeared. I...I never stopped to think he took it." Crona said.
"Why would Nagito take the note though? Not like it belonged to him." Rena said. "....maybe that's what worried him." we all looked to Near as he looked up, seemingly in deep thought.
"I don't know what kind of person Nagito was, but I never got the dangerous impression from him. But perhaps he was more concerned for our safety then we expected. It's possible that he suspected the note led to something dangerous....so he took it, and went to see if his suspicions were correct." Near explained. We all gasped.
"Holy shit, so then he was expecting something bad would happen?!" Junko stated.
"He....he was protecting Crona." I said. Crona's eyes widened in horror, and he suddenly hugged himself tightly.
"W-Wait, t-that means, i-if I-I had read t-the note, and w-went to the gym...."
"I believe it is safe to assume that you were the prime target, and not Nagito." Near stated. Crona was a trembling mess, and looked down. "N-Now way....someone...was gonna kill me?" he said. I frowned, looking away. Unfortunately, Crona did show the most vulnerability. So it figures he would be an easy target. But still.....it's hard to believe.
"But, one thing I don't understand is, if Nagito did end up in that closet and was suddenly attacked, why didn't he try to run from the closet?" Ulric asked. Amaimon placed a hand on his chin. "That's true. The lock was on the outside of the door, so he shouldn't have had any trouble leaving." he said.
"But then, there would be more damage from the bey inside the gym, right? Do you think the culprit actually hid more markings with paint in the gym?" Rena said.
"It does seem possible." Kanato said. I narrowed my eyes. While that might be a possibility, there is evidence that proves that Nagito could've been trapped in the closet. I closed my eyes, crossing my arms across my chest. Think, I know I saw something strange.....wait, that's it!
"Hold on! There is a way Nagito could've been trapped in the closet!" I stated. "Hmm? Well don't just stand there, explain yourself!" Junko demanded.
"When we were investigating, we found a trap door in the corner of the room, and it led out to the gym. So think of this; what if the culprit waited til Nagito was inside the closet, then locked him from outside the door. Then they used the trap door to go back inside the closet, and finally attack Nagito." I said. Mello's eyes widened in surprise.
"I see. That way Nagito would be trapped, and been easier to kill then and there. And when it was all done, all he had to do was cover up the crime scene and leave through the trap door." he said
"Alright! So we have a pretty good idea of how the murder went down...oh shit! Hold up a sec! I just remembered!" Rin stated. We all looked to him in confusion. "What's wrong?" Near asked.
"Wasn't there a school rule about destroying school property? That means that if the culprit messed up that closet....wouldn't they have been executed?" Rin said. My eyes widened. That's right. That's the whole reason we can't break a wall down to escape. So then...how is the culprit alive? How-
"Oops. Hehehe, um, that's my bad....." Monokuma said. We all snapped out glares at him.
"The hell you talking about, fat ass?!" Junko snapped.
"Mind your tongue, little miss prissy! But anyway, there was something I needed to modify about that rule; if you have commit a murder within the school grounds, then all charges of the damage aftermath will be looked over." Monokuma said.
"You son of a bitch?! Why the hell didn't you tell us sooner?!" Zack snapped.
"Like I said, I've been really lazy during this killing game. But don't worry, the slacking ends now. For reals." Monokuma stated, making a boy scout salute. We all sighed, ignoring him.
"Okay, well that explains that." Kokichi said.
".....but our actual suspects list is still pretty low." Rin said.
"Fantastic..." Zack murmured. "I've been thinking about that, and I believe that however knocked me unconscious was the culprit. That was the best chance they had to get what they needed from the warehouse undetected, since most of you were occupied with going to the game room." Near explained.
"So then, whoever didn't come with the group to the game room are our main suspects." Magane said. Kokichi smirked, placing his hands behind his neck.
"So that would leave....Mello, Johannes, Near, and Violet." he said. This....does not look good.
"I suggest that we hear some alibis. One for after you left the game room and one for nine o'clock at night. Otherwise, you guys aren't looking too good." Kokichi stated, wearing an expression of wickedness that could easily make a child cry.
"As I had said, I was knocked unconscious. I had only awoken this morning." Near said. Magane raised a brow. "Eh? That sounds awfully convenient~ For all we know, you could've went to the warehouse and grabbed the supplies needed to kill Nagito, ne?" she said. Her grin grew wider and wider, revealing her sharp teeth. Near didn't look the least bit worried though.
"If you do not wish to believe me, that is fine. However that is the truth." he replied.
"Hmm, moving along," Kokichi said, and glanced over at Mello, "what about you, Mello?" Mello placed a hand on his hip, looking slightly annoyed.
"After watching the motive videos, I went to the dining hall for something to eat. As for nine last night, I was asleep. Don't wanna believe me, then that's you're problem." he stated. Magane gasped. "You went to the dining hall? Isn't that where that kitchen knife came from? Isn't it? Isn't it?" she said.
"Cat boy thingy, you're up." Kokichi said. Johannes gave the boy a sharp expression. "My name is Johannes, pal. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, please try to get that right. Anyway, yesterday after the motive videos, I went to my room for a cat nap. I made sure to tell you guys before I left, remember? And as for last night, I was also asleep." he stated.
"Hmm....suspicious. But we don't have any evidence that proves that its wrong. We'll let you be, for now." Magane said.
"Oh Violet...." I turned my head to look at Kokichi, who had a completely evil expression on his face.
"Your turn~"
I couldn't help but feel frozen. If I tell them I met up with Nagito last night, I'll probably be first in line on the suspect list. But, I can't really lie, can I? I mean, if they find out I'm lying....that'll only make things worse on me. No, if I tell them the truth, it'll at least show I have nothing to hide. It'll show that I couldn't have killed Nagito.
"....after watching the motive videos, I left to get some rest in my room. However, I slept in a lot later then I expected, and ended up waking up around eight thirty. I went to the kitchen to get some water, and saw Nagito in the dining hall, reading his book. We talk for a bit, maybe fifteen minutes. Then, I noticed he pulled a piece of paper out from his pocket and read it. Right afterwards, he left the dining hall, while I returned to my room. That's....that's the truth." I said.
Everyone stared for a moment, silence lingering for a little bit. Then finally after what felt like forever, Kokichi spoke up.
"So, you're saying you're the last one to see Nagito alive? And you just happened to be in the dining hall, where you had easy access to the kitchen knife, as well as the weapons trophy case? And you just happened to see him leave the dining hall?" he said. I could tell right away where he was going with this. He already suspects me.
"That is awfully suspicious. I mean, it would add up everything we know so far." Kanato said. "Except, do we know for certain that she knew what the bey would do, and if she was from that universe?" Zack said. Johannes narrowed his eyes at me.
"Come on, are you guys that foolish? She must be the culprit. No way all that stuff was by coincidence." he stated.
"I'm telling you the truth. I didn't hurt Nagito! I swear would never hurt anyone! Especially after....the kind way he treated me. The way he brought back my hope! No, I could never do such a thing!" I stated.
"But there's no one else with so much evidence against them. And let's not forget that Crona was the prime target, not Nagito. So anything you feel towards Nagito is insignificant." Mello said. Everyone was silent for a moment. It was obvious. They had chosen me for the suspect.
"Huh? Done already," Monokuma said, "Whelp, if you feel good about your decision, then it's time to vote-"
"I don't think she did it." I perked up, and looked to my right.....where Magane stood beside me. Everyone looked at her in shock.
"What did you say?" Rin said. "I don't think she did it." Magane stated. Kokichi placed his hands on his hips. "Whaaaaat? Why you say that? C'mon, isn't it obvious that it was her?" he said.
"Did you see Violet last night? Did you see her return to her room?" Amaimon said.
"No. I didn't." Magane said bluntly. "Then what makes you so sure she's not the culprit?" Johannes said. Magane crossed her arms across her chest, humming as she began to think. "Ummm.....I don't know why." she admitted. "What? You don't know?" Near said.
"Nope. It's kinda like- how do I put it? Hmm. A gut feeling I guess," Magane looked over at me, "you see, when you're a liar like me, you get better and better at reading people. I'm not saying I can read everyone I meet, but so far, Violet-san has been the easiest to read. She's a kind girl, but is full of constant fear, suspicion, and hopelessness. Not to mention has low self confidence. Seriously she lets herself out so much that she seems like an open book." Magane stated, giggling slightly. Is she trying to defend me, or insult me?
"Your point?" Mello said, slight irritation in his tone.
"My point being, if you were to ask me, then I say she definitely didn't kill Nagito!" Magane stated.
".....I don't think she did either." I looked to my left side, where Ulric was standing. He glanced at me before looking at everyone else. "Now don't get me wrong, she definitely seemed suspicious. Hell I got a strange vibe from her the moment I saw her. Animal instinct I suppose." he said.
"Okay, then what makes you think she isn't guilty, puffball?" Junko said.
".....the way she looked at his corpse. It wouldn't have mattered if it was Nagito or someone else, but the look in her eyes when she saw that corpse. That same fear, that same despair.....I have a hard time believing she would react like that when looking at her own handiwork." Ulric explained. I perked up, my eyes widening.
Magane and Ulric....believe I'm not guilty. Perhaps their reasons are bizarre, and even dark, but....they believe me. They believe I'm not the culprit. They know I'm innocent.
"Blah blah blah, enough with the gut feeling stuff," Kokichi said, "Look, there's too much evidence that points towards her. If someone doesn't bring up another piece of evidence proving her otherwise, or didn't see her leave the dining hall at 8:53 pm, then its too late for her." I perked up.
What did he just say?
"Wait, say that again!" I blurted out. Everyone looked at me surprised, especially Kokichi. "Huh? Repeat what?"
"The whole thing. Say it again!" I said. "Uhhhh, okay then. If someone doesn't bring up another piece of evidence proving her otherwise, or didn't see her leave the dining hall at 8:53 pm-"
"Kokichi. I never said I left the dining hall at 8:53. I only said I was there for about fifteen minutes before Nagito left." I stated. That made everyone look right at Kokichi, who blinked in surprise.
"Kokichi, how could you have known what time I left the dining hall....if you didn't see me leave?" I said.
