It's Time
Stevie sat across from Kristen in the living room.
Stevie was confused; here was Kristen sitting in front of her but Kristen had no baby bump what so ever.
Kristen looked at Stevie and took a deep breath. "Mrs. Buckingham, I wanted to talk to alone first, then talk to Lindsey. I want to tell you...I'm sorry."
Stevie didn't say anything and waited for Kristen to continue.
Kristen had tears in her eyes. "I lied. Lindsey wasn't the father of my baby."
Stevie stared wide eyed, did she hear that right?
"That night, I was out with some friends, my boyfriend...well, now ex boyfriend had just broken up with me a few days before. My friends wanted to take me out so I could have some fun and maybe find someone new. I was tipsy and I spotted Lindsey from across the bar. I could tell right away he was completely out of it and well, I did find him attractive and I don't know...I was looking for a one night stand. So I went up to him, started talking to him and I basically threw myself at him. At first he told me no and of course I didn't give up. I dragged into the men's bathroom and into that stall..." Kristen's tears rolled down her cheeks. "I began to kiss him and I began to try to take off his clothes but...he stopped me. Even though he was so drunk he couldn't see straight he stopped me and said he was married and that he loved his wife very much. Nothing happened between us."
Stevie sat on the sofa feeling stunned. It took her a moment to forms words.
"Why...why did you lie and...put my family through all this?!" Stevie asked, her voice slightly raised.
"I wasn't thinking clearly, I found out I was pregnant a few weeks after that and I didn't have a father for my baby, I called my ex and he said for me to get rid of it. I couldn't do that so Lindsey came to my mind. I'm sorry." Kristen said.
"I...I can't even fathom what kind of person would lie like this and put innocent people through hell!" Stevie was livid; she then took a breath. "Well, I'm glad you told me."
Kristen nodded. "Can I talk to Lindsey? Just to tell him?"
Stevie nodded. "I'll go get him."
Before she could even attempt to get up, Lindsey came through the living room.
"Kristen? What are you...doing here?" He said as he noticed Kristen had no signs of being pregnant.
Stevie looked at him and said. "Come sit down Linds."
Lindsey did what she said and sat next to her. Stevie grabbed his hand in hers and moved closer to him.
"Go on, tell him." Stevie said.
Kristen nodded; she told Lindsey everything she told Stevie.
Lindsey was very angry by the end; he felt like he would explode.
Then he felt Stevie next to him; she wrapped an arm around him. He looked down at her and stared into her eyes. It calmed him down. All he saw and felt now was her love for him.
Lindsey closed his eyes and leaned down, his forehead touching her forehead.
Lindsey sighed then opened his eyes and turned to Kristen. "I'm not going to lie...I'm really angry at you and...I probably could tear this room apart. You put me and most importantly my family through hell, although you're not all to blame. I'm the one who had one drink too many. But it's over and done with, and you told the truth. Thank you."
Stevie put her head on his shoulder and held him more securely.
"Yes, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't tell the truth. Again I'm so sorry." Kristen said. "I'll um...I'll just go now." She stood up and turned to leave.
"Wait!" Stevie exclaimed. "What..where's your baby? Are they okay?"
Kristen hung her head and sobbed. "I...I miscarried. I had her two weeks ago. Once my baby was gone, I did a lot of thinking and I realized how wrong I was with what I did. I also realized that...this isn't the woman my child would have been proud of. I want to be a woman that she and hopefully future children will be proud of."
Stevie couldn't help but cry for the child that was lost, after all they were innocent in all this.
Kristen gathered herself. "I'll be going now. You both won't ever see me again. I'll see myself out; Goodbye."
And with that Kristen was gone.
Lindsey and Stevie turned to each other and stared into each other's eyes.
In that moment, everything they wanted to say didn't need to be said. They felt it.
Lindsey crushed Stevie's lips with his and held her in his arms both crying tears of relief and happiness.
Stevie gasped as they broke apart.
She breathed in and out.
"Stevie, what's wrong?" Lindsey asked worriedly.
"I'm okay. This little one is just excited, they are moving all over the place." Stevie chuckled a little then sat back on the sofa with her head back.
Lindsey placed his hands on her belly and smiled. "Wow! I don't remember Lily or Fiona being this active!"
"No, they were not like this." She said as she placed her hands on top of his. "Oh god, this baby isn't going to let us sleep ever again!"
They laughed then they were quiet for a moment feeling their child moving and kicking from inside Stevie, Lindsey then said. "I'm sorry Steph for putting you and our daughters through this. If only I hadn't drank so much I would have remembered everything and saved us so much heartache."
"Shhhh...it's over now. Let's not think about it anymore." Stevie replied. "Well, after we tell Fiona and Lily."
Lindsey nodded and kissed her lips once again.
Stevie pulled away and giggled. "Come on Mr. Buckingham, let's go back outside with our daughters."
"Alright Mrs. Buckingham, let's go." He said helping Stevie up from the sofa.
Once they told Lily and Fiona, they all had a discussion about letting go of what happened and moving forward.
Fiona was the most vocal of course expressing her feelings of anger towards Kristen which were understandable.
But after a while, Fiona began to understand what her mother was saying about letting go.
They all held each other in a group hug then went inside to get into pajamas and had a movie night.
Lily still felt no contractions what's so ever that night and now here she was three days past her due date.
Ryan called saying his company extended his stay in New York. One of their clients Ryan was working with was being extremely difficult so it was taking much longer to come to an agreement.
Lily and Stevie were taking a nap in Stevie's bedroom.
Fiona was in school and Lindsey was lightly playing his guitar in the room.
Lily began to stir as she felt sharp pain in her abdomen.
She sat up with a hand on her belly and breathed in and out.
Lindsey noticed and quit playing. He stood up from his seat and put his guitar down. He walked to her and asked. "Lily, what's wrong?"
"I think...I just felt a contraction." She replied as the pain went away; she looked at the clock.
Lily's doctor told her that to come to the hospital when her contractions were 10 minutes apart.
She relaxed back onto her pillow and told Lindsey she was going to get some more sleep while she could.
He nodded and went back to his seat by the window and picked up his guitar again and continued to play softly.
A few hours later, the Buckingham family were sitting down for dinner.
Stevie had been feeling slightly off; she couldn't place the feeling. Although, she felt the baby was in a lower position now.
Lily's contraction were fifteen minutes apart and had been doing well so far.
Stevie had coached her through them and stayed close by her side.
Fiona was telling her parents about her day at school; Fiona was becoming her usual self again.
After dinner, Stevie laid with Lily in bed holding her hand as she had another contraction.
Lindsey was in the other room using the phone trying to track down Ryan. Lindsey had called him a few hours ago and Ryan had booked a red eye and was on his way back home.
Once it passed, Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"Mom..."
Stevie looked at her daughter with concern.
"What is it sweetie?"
Lily looked into Stevie's eyes. "I'm scared." She whispered.
"Oh honey. It's alright to be scared. I was when I was in labor with you. But I had your dad and my mom by my side through it all." Stevie said as she kissed her daughter's hand then continued. "Then once you were placed in my arms the pain was just a distant memory."
"Stay with me, okay? Don't leave my side, please mommy." Lily cried.
"I promise I'll stay by your side till you are holding my grand baby in your arms." Stevie said with a smile.
Suddenly, Lily gasped. She stared wide eyed.
"Lily? What's wrong?"
"My...water broke!" Lily said in a shaky voice.
Soon after they were making their way to the hospital. Karen would be taking Fiona to the hospital in the morning to be with her parents and sister.
It was 9 pm when they arrived at the hospital and got checked in.
Lily was being examined by her doctor, Lindsey waited outside the hall and Stevie stayed by her daughter's side.
Stevie sat down on a chair close to Lily's bed when she felt it. It was a contraction; she knew it wasn't a Braxton Hick's, it was a contraction but it was dull so she didn't think anything of it.
She hid it well then concentrated on her daughter.
"Well Mrs. Banks, your contractions are seven minutes apart and you are at 7 centimeters. Things are progressing really well, and you should be meeting your baby in a few hours, or maybe less." The doctor said with a smile.
Lily nodded. "Thank you Dr. Thomas."
Dr. Thomas excused himself and told Lindsey he could go back in.
As the time passed, Stevie was having contractions regularly now but still hadn't voiced it.
She had promised her daughter she would be by her side till her baby was born.
There were times when Lily would have a contraction, so would Stevie.
Stevie would coach Lily through the contraction and would do the breathing exercises with her.
Three hours passed and Stevie had been keeping track of her contractions; they were fifteen minutes apart and they were becoming more painful and it was becoming harder to hide them from Lindsey and Lily.
Lily was sleeping, so Stevie decided to stretch her legs a bit. She walked into the bathroom and used it then washed her hands.
As she turned towards the door, a pain much stronger than the ones she had been having shot through her abdomen.
Stevie doubled over and had to grab the sink with one hand for support, the other on the bottom of her belly.
Oh no! Not now. She thought to herself.
She breathed in and out; this contraction lasted longer too.
Lindsey knocked softy. "Stevie, are you okay in there?"
Stevie gathered herself once it passed then opened the door.
"Yes I'm fine." Stevie said.
Lindsey looked at her and could feel something was was up.
Stevie wrapped her arms around him, hugging him as close as her big belly would allow and laid her head on his chest. "I'm just tired of sitting, I need to stand for a bit."
Lindsey wrapped is arms tighter around her and they held each other for a moment. He smiled and began to hum then he slowly moved from side to side.
Stevie smiled and looked into his eyes.
Lily had woken up and saw her parents in the most sweetest moment. She smiled and watched them slow dancing.
But the moment was cut short when Lily had a contraction.
Stevie turned to see her daughter; she gave Lindsey a quick kiss then went to stand by Lily.
Stevie held Lily's hand and gave her words of encouragement.
Just then Dr. Thomas came in to check on Lily's progress. Lindsey went back into the hall.
"Alright Lily. You have one more centimeter to go then it'll be time to push." Dr. Thomas said. He then notice Stevie change, it seemed she was concentrating on something else.
It had been ten minutes since the last contraction.
"Mrs. Buckingham? Are you alright?" Dr. Thomas asked.
"Yes...I'm okay. I just need to sit." Stevie said trying to keep her voice as normal as possible.
She sat down slowly on the chair next to Lily's bed.
"Mom, are you sure you're okay?" Lily asked concerned.
Stevie took Lily's hand in hers. "I'm positive."
After that it was getting harder for Stevie to keep her contractions hidden. They were much stronger now and sweat began to appear on her forehead.
She knew she was going to have to say something, she was labor, there was no denying it anymore.
She wanted to be there for her daughter but now she was losing concentration as her own contractions rolled around.
"Linds...could you help me up please?" Stevie asked out of breath.
Lindsey helped her stand as he asked. "What's going Steph?"
Stevie looked into his eyes and he knew.
She doubled over in his arms, she tried to keep from crying out but the pain was too much.
"Mom!" Lily exclaimed.
"Stevie, are you having a contraction?" Lindsey asked as he held on to her.
Stevie nodded as she breathed in and out.
"Is this your first one?" He asked.
Stevie shook her head.
"What?! Stevie, how long have you been having them?"
Stevie looked up at Lindsey. "Since...we got here."
Lindsey eyes were wide. "Stephanie! Why didn't you say anything?! That was over four hours ago!"
Stevie straightened up. "It's just...I made a promise to Lily that I would be here for her until the baby was born."
"Mom, you should have said something. I would have understood." Lily said as she reached for Stevie's hand.
Stevie took her daughter's hand; she was about to say something when she felt warm liquid dripping down her leggings.
Stevie stared wide eyed.
"Mom?" Lily squeezed her hand.
Stevie looked down to see a puddle underneath her.
Lindsey saw what happened. "Oh god! I'll get the doctor." He said as he rushed out to find Dr. Thomas.
He wasn't Stevie's doctor but they needed some one now.
Lily looked down. "Your water broke!"
A few seconds later and Stevie cried out again. Tears fell down her cheeks, her breathing escalated. It seemed her contractions were coming closer together now.
"I'm...sorry Lily." Stevie sobbed.
"There isn't anything to be sorry for." Lily said.
Lily held on to her mother; now it was her turn to comfort Stevie.
The door flew open and Dr. Thomas came in with a wheelchair. Lindsey following close behind.
"Mrs. Buckingham, we are going to take you into the room next door and examine you." Dr. Thomas said. "A nurse is paging your doctor right now. Dr. Anderson will be here shortly.
Stevie didn't want to leave Lily but knew she knew she couldn't stay with her.
The door flew open once again as Ryan ran into the room.
"Ryan!" Lily exclaimed.
He ran to Lily and kissed her lips. "Oh honey I'm so glad I made it!"
He then took in the scene around. "What's going on?"
"Mom's in labor too." Lily replied.
"Whoa! This has turned into some night huh?" He chuckled.
They wheeled Stevie next door where she changed into a hospital gown and Dr. Thomas examined her.
"Wow! Um...Mrs. Buckingham, you are at 9 centimeters." Dr. Thomas said.
"What?! I've been in labor for only five hours! How's that possible?" Stevie asked in shock.
"Well, sometimes these things do happen faster than others. Since this is your third pregnancy, I guess you could say that your body knows what to do." Dr. Thomas said. "Alright, your doctor should be here any moment now. I'm gonna check in on Lily. I'll be back in a bit."
A nurse put a fetal monitor around Stevie's belly and left the room after checking that everything was going well with the baby's vitals.
Stevie had just had a contraction, Lindsey held her hand in his.
"Oh Steph, we are gonna have baby tonight!" He said with so much warmth in his voice.
She smiled a little as she was now feeling exhausted. "I can't believe this is happening. I'm worried." She said her smile fading. "I'm five weeks early."
"Everything's going to be fine Steph. You'll see." He said sounding positive even though underneath he was a nervous wreck.
The door opened again and Dr. Thomas walked in, followed by Dr. Anderson.
"I have some news, we are taking Lily into a delivery room now. She's ready to push." Dr. Thomas said. "I'll leave you now with Dr. Anderson. I already gave her a run down of what's been going on."
Dr. Anderson went over the baby's vitals again. The baby seemed to be holding up well and so was Stevie.
Sometime later, Stevie was laying on her side with her eyes closed, Lindsey held her hand in his.
Suddenly Stevie opened her eyes and said. "Oh god! I feel the baby! I need to push!" She rolled onto her back.
Lindsey stood up. "Wait Steph! Don't push, I'll get help."
He ran out of the room and found Dr. Anderson.
They both ran back into the room.
Stevie was trying her best not to push.
Dr. Anderson right away pushed the button on the side of the bed so the nurses could come in.
She could see the top of the baby's head. "Okay Stephanie, we're going to move you to a delivery room right now. Please, don't push until we get there."
Nurses burst into the room. Dr. Anderson told them to hurry and get a delivery room ready.
Everyone sprang into action.
Dr. Anderson and a nurse began to wheel Stevie to the delivery room.
The room she was wheeled in was right next to Lily's.
Once set up which took less than a minute, Dr. Anderson quickly changed into scrubs for the delivery. Everyone was stationed in their places.
Lindsey took Stevie's hand and held it firmly.
Stevie had her legs in the stirrups.
"Alright, Stephanie, you can push now."
Stevie took a deep breath and pushed.
"Okay, relax for a minute." The doctor said.
Stevie did as she was told.
"Okay, push."
Stevie took another deep breath and pushed.
The baby's head was now out.
Stevie took one last breather then she returned to pushing.
She let out her breath as she felt her baby leave her body. She relaxed back into her pillow.
After a few tense seconds, Stevie began to get worried but then the room was filled with a loud strong cry.
She lifted her head and saw her baby.
Tears of joy rolled down her cheeks.
Dr. Anderson placed the baby on Stevie's chest.
"Here you go mommy, someone was ready to meet you. Say hello to your baby girl."
Stevie held her baby close and placed kisses on the top of her head. "Oh my baby girl. I'm so glad you are finally here. I love you."
"Oh Steph...she's beautiful." Lindsey whispered as his own tears rolled down his cheeks.
He placed a kiss on Stevie's lips then kissed their baby girl on her tiny head.
Meanwhile
Lily was having trouble pushing. It seemed the baby didn't want to come out.
"Okay Lily, stop for a moment." Dr. Thomas said. "Take a moment then we'll continue."
Lily nodded weakly; tears rolled down her cheeks. She really wanted her mom by her side but knew that couldn't happen.
Once Lily rested a moment, she went back to pushing. After a few minutes, Dr. Thomas said with concern in his voice. "Lily, stop pushing."
"What's going on?" She sobbed.
"The baby is breech. We have to do an emergency c-section." Dr. Thomas said.
Lily began to sob harder.
Everyone rushed to get things prepared to head to the O.R.
They wheeled her into the operating room and got her prepped.
While laying there, Lily prayed with everything in her that her baby would be alright.
