Chapter 2: Friends and Foes
Maybe it was a bad idea to not let his mom go with him. Perhaps it was the rather foreboding information he had overheard, the rock hidden in his coat pocket, or the strange noises which only seemed to grow louder the deeper he walked into the woods, but Sugar was majorly creeped out.
"It's fine, I'm not gonna die... I'm not going to die.. I. Am. Not. Going. To. Die." he said to himself in an attempt to calm himself down. By now, he was deep enough in the forest that the trees blocked out almost all of the sun, and he could barely see five feet in front of him. Yep, he definitely should have asked his mom to come with him.
He tried to walk as quickly and quietly as possible, which was hard, as every step broke a cluster of twigs, sending a crack rippling through the trees. Sugar scowled. The one downside of having a private enchanted forest: you won't be able to meet any one who could accompany you.
But as he walked, the forest began to shift. The changeover. He was now walking through the other enchanted forest. More than half of the way there now. And sure enough, he began to hear the voices of others, echoing through the trees towards him. Feeling a little more reassured, he continued on his way, and all was fine, until his ears picked out something. Footsteps. And they were getting closer.
Relax, it's just one of the other students... Sugar thought to himself. Probably.
Then from somewhere to his left, two glowing, cyan eyes appeared, and looked straight at him. He didn't even have enough time to react before whatever it was rushed out of the darkness towards him.
"Hello! Uhhhhh, do you know which way's the right way to go to Scarwood? I think I got myself lost." a tall boy who was currently plucking leaves out of his dreaded locks. He had bright blue eyes, and mottled skin, some patches lighter than others. Sugar relaxed and kicked himself internally. Of course it was a student. He had just gotten worked up over nothing.
"You literally just go straight," Sugar said, pointing out in front of him, "how'd you even get lost in the first place?"
The tall boy seemed a little embarrassed at this question.
"Well, there was this squirrel, right? So I may have gotten a little distracted by the squirrel and followed it for a bit too long, and gotten lost. But since I'm here, I guess it all worked out fine in the end?" he said with a nervous laugh.
"Seriously?" Sugar looked on incredulously. "That's actually kind of sad."
"Hey, don't laugh, I'm highly perceptible to squirrels, you know, my ma used to say it's probably something to do with her, but she's was never sure... oh wait, I'm not supposed to talk about that to other people. Never mind. Pretend I didn't say anything."
Sugar shrugged.
"Fine by me. You said nothing of substance anyways. I'll let you'll follow me to the school, but only that." he muttered quickly, and continued on his path, eager not to converse with this strange guy anymore. But from beside him, the tall boy continued to talk.
"Oh, okay then! The name's Knight by the way, like the chess piece!"
Sugar somehow took on an even more incredulous expression.
"...Your parents really thought that was a good idea?"
The tall boy nodded.
"My mom said it was a noble name! So are you a first year as well?"
"Yep." Sugar said, with enough force to indicate that he didn't really wish to talk for much longer, but Knight didn't seem to get it.
"Nice! What's your name?" he said with the same annoying cheerfulness. Finally, after a long period of awkward silence, Sugar reluctantly made a reply. Not because he wanted to, but because Knight seemed intent on staring at him until he made a reply.
"...Sugar. Sugar Tho—"
"Ooh, so like the candy! I like it. It's rather sweet, pun not intended. I actually don't intend a lot of things... But that's besides the point!"
Sugar blinked. Usually people made fun of his name, which was why he usually had to tack his last name onto it when introducing himself, to associate him with the power behind his family, and hopefully reduce his chances of getting weird looks for it, but surprisingly, this guy seemed not to even care. Though, to be frank, he didn't really look like the smart type, so maybe it just didn't register...
"Sooo, how far do we have to go?" Knight asked, squinting at a light in the distance. "Is that it? Off there in the distance?"
"Yes? Have you never been in a enchanted forest?"
"...no."
Sugar felt a sense of pity for Knight. He probably didn't come from a prestigious witching family, judging by the lack of education about magic he had. Maybe he had human parents? It wasn't too unusual. With the right alignment of the stars and some supernatural incidents, a human child could be infused with magic. That would probably also be the reason he seemed so clueless about everything.
"Me ma always told me to stay away from magic forests. Said it was dangerous." Knight said with a frown, "Pa then always told her to stop scaring me."
As the boy spoke, Sugar couldn't help but notice he exclusively referred to his mother in the past tense. A part of him was curious, wanting to find out why. But the other, more rational part of him told him not to press it. After all, he had only just met the guy and curiousity did kill the c—
Sugar's ears perked up, focusing in on a rumbling sound that was coming from behind him. A sound that was gradually getting louder. From Knight's confused reaction, it appeared that he had noticed it as well.
"What's that?"
"I don't know... sounds like something heavy." Sugar frowned.
"Is it a unicorn? I hear neighing..."
Sugar was about to tell that numbskull Knight that Unicorns only lived in Western Europe when the realisation hit him.
"Get out of the way! It's a carriage!" he immediately dragged the larger boy out the way, as he didn't seem to have any self-preservation skills, and not a moment too soon, as an all-black carriage came rattling past. And of course it was pulled by all black horses. Sugar repressed the urge to roll his eyes.
When it had passed, Sugar continued on his way, leaving a bewildered Knight standing on the side of the road.
"What the heck was that?" Knight finally said, after dashing to catch up to the shorter boy, "Was that another witch thing I don't know about?"
"No," Suagr replied matter-of-factly, "if we wanted to get somewhere fast, we'd teleport or fly. Mostly since magic is so much less of a hassle. In fact, there is only one family that I can think of who would be so ridiculously over-the-top."
By now, the two boys had made it out of the forest, and were now standing in the grassy clearing that surrounded a grand castle, with a lake to the side of it. Not that thwy could make much of it, with the throng of other students witches walking from their own respective paths in the enchanted forest to the castle. And not to mention, the black carriage, parked haphazardly right in the middle of the clearing, much to everyone's annoyance.
The carriage's door was open, on it emblazoned in gold a coat of arms, featuring a crow being struck down with an arrow, bordered with thorny rose vines.
"The Crowstrikes." Sugar growled, glaring at the boy his age currently being helped out. His golden blond hair made him stick out like a sore thumb. He glanced to the side, his cold blue eyes noticing Sugar.
"Oh. Hello, Sugar. I see you've got a friend with you" he said with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. Knight tried to wave, but Sugar gave him a side-eye that stopped him in his tracks.
"Great to see you too, Charlie." Sugar huffed, not wanting to look at the other boy.
Charlie scoffed and slammed the carriage door, nearly crushing the fingers of the poor man who had been holding it open for him a few second prior. He turned and melted into the throng of students headed towards the castle.
"Uh, you two know each other?" Knight finally asked, once Charlie Crowstrike was sufficiently out of earshot.
"Against my will, yes." he frowned, eyes narrowing, "Now, since we're here now, I'm not going to help you anymore. But i'll give you this one piece of advice."
"Do not, under any circumstances, piss off a Crowstrike."

Ah yes, Knight, my little himbo pookie bear <3 He's such a silly little guy, and will remain so throughout the whole series, because I don't have it in me to hurt a himbo. Even if i did get my heart surgically removed hehe >:3
Also, I just know Charlie is going to be called dollar store Draco Malfoy. Because he is. But seriously, no. Sugar's more like malfoy probably lol. Got the little bitch personality down xD
They're both going to make Sugar lose so many brain cells, which is saying something since Sugar only has 2. Well, I have to go to sleep now so bye ig
