The Present

Author's POV

Just another day off. Namjoon just got out of his car and was heading to the nearest Starbucks when his phone rang "Hello? " he asked. "Dr Kim code STEMI we need you in the EKG RIGHT NOW! A woman in her 50s just had a cardiac arrest and it is pretty severe " The nurse in the other side of the phone yelled. Namjoon immediately got in his car and turned on his speaker on the phone so that he can talk to her while driving. "Is there any cardiologist available other than me?" he asked "No Doc we didn't know that all the other doctors were on a day off. It is ridiculous" She said with panic showing in her voice. "okay I'm on my way" Namjoon immediately stepped on the accelerator. 

He soon arrived at the hospital, sprinting to the ER where nurses were frantically going around treating some patients. He saw a nurse waiting. "when did she arrive? He asked while walking down the hall and the nurse following behind. "2 minutes ago," she said with her voice still trembling. s]She was just a new nurse and Namjoon can tell that she was terrified. Namjoon stopped in his tracks and looked at her "hey don't be scared okay, let's just do our best. Ok?" He said and flashed a dimpled smile before sprinting to the EKG leaving the nurse with a light blush on her face. "what a playboy indeed," she said under her breathe.

 Namjoon arrived at the EKG. He puts on a pair of gloves and immediately looked at the ECG (electrocardiogram). He approached the woman who was having trouble breathing "Hi Ma'am I'm doctor Kim can I ask you if you were feeling any sort of pain before you even had a heart attack?"

"I just felt light pain in my chest, which became very painful slowly" "I see, have you had these kinds of symptoms before?" "I'm not sure if I remember anything like that" "Ma'am, I don't want to scare you...but it seems like you urgently need surgery." "Why? I am going to die if I don't?!" "Ma'am please don't panic nothing is going to happen. But you have to have open-heart surgery for the blockage in your heart." "Dr Kim, are you sure that I am going to survive if I have this operation? Can you promise "Ma'am there is a rule in the medical field, we never promise our patients. But I will try as hard as I can to make you healthy again." Namjoon knew his job was already very tough and by promising the woman he will put himself under even more pressure. For him, his patients are the priority. "ok then I will have this operation." "Nurse please prepare the ER immediately. I hope everything is ready." "yes doctor."

With all the information he needed, he was ready to do the surgery and let me remind you he's still on casual wear. They transferred her to the cath lab. Then a nurse called him in the corner. "Doctor, there is a complication, look at this" she showed a printer version of the women's heart "I- I don't think we can do this, t- there's so much blockage in her arteries. I don't think w-we can do this on time, her h-heart can't pump blood through her body because the blood can't flow which can lead to heart failure... That c-can also lead for her t- to have...CHD. T-this makes make her chance of survival less than 30%" She finally stopped, Namjoon nodded and sighed " No we can still do this, she's just here for 5 minutes now we can't let her die right? We can at least try" he said and looked back at the patient. The nurse sighed. "let's do this" He said walked to the patient

Namjoon was extremely nervous about this operation. He has done many open-heart surgeries but his one was just reminding him of something he doesn't want to remember. It reminds him of his father's death. His father died due to CHD and cardiac arrest. Since that he decided to make his passion into something real. Or was it really because of that?

Now let's talk about Namjoon's college life, shall we? 

There once was a boy living a normal life he lives with his single mother. He loved reading books about operating on human bodies after the time his mother bought him one when he was 11 years old. His classmates thought it was weird but he didn't care, he was fascinated by that. He really loves reading some books especially cardiology books. He was so amazed by how the human heart can pump up blood through our whole body it was just fun to learn cardiology for him.
