sunset sadness

jay, an incorrigible lady in the full bloom of youth, stood alone on the beach, gazing over the azure water with her spirited sorrel pools. Her amber hair rustled lightly in the ocean breeze.
She tried to keep still despite her impatient excitement as she hummed "Iris" to herself. She wore an obsidian shirt that left her silvery arms bare and cerulean shorts that looked comfortable
and easy to wear. Her amber hair was trimmed short around her head, complementing her passionate pearly visage.
Her thoughts wandered to her days in jason's company. It must have been fate in mortal form that brought them together. She knew from the moment she laid eyes on him that they were
meant to be. From then on, they were inseparable. They shared every part of their life with each other. That was how it was to this very day.
jay's light brown windows to her soul spotted jason further down on the beach, closer to the roaring sea. His lovely raven coiffure was attractive as ever. His spheres were turned toward
the ocean, hidden from jay's sight, but she knew and loved their shy copper hue. He was dressed in his usual everyday clothes. He had a generously curvaceous healthily color-touched
platinum form. Furry ears flicked at the top of his head, and he twitched his ebon tail. As jay drew nearer, she caught a note of his familiar scent, a mixture of earthiness and sourness that
was uniquely his. She smiled to herself. It always reminded her of the time they shared. "kitten," she called, walking towards him.
He jumped a bit before turning around, smiling shyly. "Oh, jay! I-It's nice to see you." jay smirked. "Good to see you. C'mon." They began their leisurely walk along the ocean's edge.
"So," she began, "how've you been lately? Anyone giving you trouble?"
"Oh, n-no," jason stammered, "not at all, jay. Everything's been going well, and, um...." He blushed. "I missed you... that's all."
jay let her hand fall across his back, muttering quickly as if almost embarrassed, "Yeah, I missed you too." jason was silent in response, only leaning toward jay's warmth.
"You're a good person. You know?"
"Why do you say that all of a sudden...?" he murmured. "Especially for a person like... like me."
"I figured you should know." She glanced at him before placing her hands behind her head. "Hanging out with a rascal like me hasn't changed you a bit."

"You shouldn't say that about yourself," jason whispered. "If there's anything I've ever done right, it's all thanks to you." She laughed at herself and looked up into the sky,
dropping her arms and thinking about all the things that had been said of her, and the simple feeling that she was corrupting something pure whenever she hung around jason.
"Not really. But if you say so."

jason slipped his calloused hand into hers. With a little smile, he stated, "You're so good to me, jay. I can never tell you enough how much you mean to me." jay held his hand and thought
to herself that that was enough -- that if she meant something good to this one person, nothing the rest of the world said mattered.
After a few moments, they found themselves walking down the beach again. Something was bothering her, although jay didn't want to admit it. She didn't want to burden jason with it
anyway -- she was supposed to be the stronger one! Still, her relationship of the past wouldn't leave her alone.
All the same, jason seemed to notice. He looked at jay cautiously for a moment before murmuring, "jay? Is... something wrong?"

"jason... it's..."

And at that moment everything came together, all of the magic and the hurt that had been building that day, and he locked his orbs with hers and whispered, "You can tell me."

It was like a floodgate burst, or some barrier of fear had been struck down. jay shook her head and everything came out at once. "I keep thinking about him. You know, we... were together,
in our own way, heh. I didn't want to talk about him all the time with you, jason. I want you to know... it's not the same. But, no matter what... when I think about him, it burns. He... isn't someone
I'm going to forget."
jason listened silently and solemnly. At last, when all the words had left her and she was at a loss for words, he reached out to her and took a deep breath to whisper back,
"jay... I... I don't know what it's like, to live with your relationship of the past... but... I'm sorry, jay. I wish... I wish I could help." jay's eyes began to burn, and she abruptly pulled
him into a fierce embrace. His depths widened at first, but then he too felt overwhelmed by emotion and succumbed to the warmth of her touch.

"You," jay whispered, her breath hot on his ear. "As long as you're here, I'll be all right."

"jay..." jason laid a hand on her shoulder, pushing her lightly so that they parted enough to look each other in the eye. "The truth is, I... feel the same way about you."
jay tilted her head forward, pressing their foreheads together, and whispered, "What is it, jason? Have you... been in pain, too?"

"jay, it's..." jason took a shuddering breath and whispered, "It's just... I'm just no good, jay. I can never do anything right.... I guess, I'm sorry. I just ruin everything. I'll probably
ruin this.... I... forget it. I just can't..."

jay placed her hands on jason's cheeks, stroking his cheekbone as she soothed, "jason... you're not alone. I know what it's like -- it happened to me too. I know that pain.
My legacy of failure... sometimes it still comes back to haunt me. I know it's not easy." jay placed her hands on jason's shoulders. They held each other as tears trickled down cheeks
and dripped onto the shifting sands to be carried away into the sea. With time and soothing embraces, their pain dissipated into a mist swept out by the ocean breeze and into the setting sun.

They basked in each other's quiet companionship for a few moments.
"The sunset is so beautiful, isn't it?"

jay lifted her head at jason's words to behold the dying sun's fiery radiance. "It's nice."

After a moment of silence, he asked, "Do you think we'll be together forever?"

"I think we'll be forever," jay murmured in response.

"I would like that, master. Let's be together forever, then." jason clutched her hand and sidled closer.

jay sighed with contentment and brought him closer. She gazed at the beautiful sunny rays of the falling sun, thinking about everything that had transpired on this day and all that
would pass between them.

"I love you, jason."

"I love you too, jay."

Their lips met, and cinnamon strands met onyx ones, aflame in the dying light. The sand was their witness and the rumbling ocean their approving audience, and jason,
her eternally faithful lover. jay thought to herself that nothing could be more perfect in the world.
