Chapter 19
I watched from the side lines as the other men encircled him as he regaled them with the odd feeling. Like someone tugged on his shirt, something heavy pushed him to the ground. I wanted to complain at him, telling him I wasn't heavy but bit my tongue. Then men started talking, discussing their next move. I watched with interest, wondering who the instigator or maybe instigators were. There was one man, mid set frame, dark blonde hair with very handsome features. He was the instigator; the rest were mindless followers. Why? What was his problem? The majority of the men were happy, some had already been approved for jobs and relationships. Relationships meant that they would leave this building and be moved into the other building with their new partner when the new buildings went up. The maps of the buildings had included the new ones that were waiting to be built, including the family accommodation. They all knew that there was the possibility of having a permanent relationship here. They could have free reign over how much sex they had provided they produced a child or a pregnancy within the first year. So what was this guy's problem? I entered his mind, he had a job that he liked out on the farm land, he was earning a wage. He had applied for the integrated living but his application had been halted. Why? I slowly walked the edge of the room, reading his mind. He applied, he sat the genetics test and told there was a few choices available to him, the next step was the psych evaluation.
The thing about us vampires was that we liked to keep secrets. One of them was like what I was doing, the ability to become invisible. Another was the ability to read minds. This particular human had sat the psych evaluation with the psychiatrist, unaware that a panel of vampires were behind the glass window reading his mind. Every single human would go through this, to evaluate if they were a threat to themselves or to someone else. And this man here, he was a real problem. He wasn't a threat to himself, nor to any man in this room. No, he was a threat to women. I flicked through hundreds of horrid images of him and what he did when he was a free man. No wonder he was protesting, in his mind he was lusting for the women he couldn't get to, his mind taunted him. Watching the women as they sat in the park, eating in the food hall, in the library. It was only a matter of time before he struck and as a victim of a vile act, I wouldn't want any woman to go through it. Human or vampire, women needed to be protected from him. I continued to edge the wall, waiting until I was in a good position. As he looked to my direction, I flickered my image so that he could see me and then returned to nothing again. He frowned as he looked at what would be a bare wall. Slowly I edged to the archway, doing it again. Curiosity had struck him and he quietly slipped away from the group. He followed me to the empty corridor between their dorm rooms, I flickered my image again outside the bathroom. The man watched the door open by itself, cautiously walking through it. I was sitting on the vanity as he closed the door, he grinned at me as I reappeared.
"Boss lady, what a pleasant surprise. Here to negotiate?"
"Why are you rioting?"
"I want to be approved for integrated living."
"You know why you were not approved, don't you?"
"No." he shook his head with a devilish smirk, slowly etching closer.
"You do, you are a rapist and we will not have the likes of you around innocent women."
"If I am what you say I am, why do you put yourself in danger?"
"I'm not in danger."
"How so?"
He moved closer, now within striking distance.
"Do you know of a vampire's abilities?"
"Well I just learned that they can disappear."
"We can." I grinned. "What else?"
"You are toying with me." he frowned "I think we are done here."
"Oh I do agree with you."
The man turned back to me from the door, watching me. In his mind he had thought that he was going to pass on me, deeming me too much of a risk. But the tone of my voice must have lit some desire in his mind, now he had changed his mind.
"A vampire can lure a human." I crooked my finger at him, urging him to me.
Like one stiff robot he stood tall and rigid, his bodies movement was disjointed as he stared straight ahead.
"A vampire can suggest to a human. Would you like to give it a go? Kneel before your master."
The man got down on both knees and stared directly at the vanity edge. I got off the vanity and rounded him, watching him as he knelt in a trance.
"A vampire can rob you of your life."
I grabbed a fist full of hair and pulled it back forcefully.
"Are you ready to die?"
The smell of his blood roused my senses as it pumped through his body. In a trance his heart beat a normal healthy beat.
"Remain still, do not move."
As I lowered to him, he did not move, his heart beat stayed the same. He would not be aware of what is going on, all he would see is what is in front of his eyes, one hazy image as his life slowly slips away. His blood was pure heaven, soaking through me, pulling me into a deep abyss of the feeding frenzy. He was never going to survive this, I didn't want him to and I think that made it worse. My inner vampire wanted to kill him. Hate still lingered through my body, I knew I resented mankind because of one terrible moment in my life. This man was one of them, one of those that I hated. Men who thought that women were theirs to control, to do with as they pleased. His life force ebbed in and out as the blood gushed through my fangs, hot ooze that quashed my rising need. A thump on the locked door pulled me out of my blood lust, realising I would have a body to dispose of very soon. Questions would be asked if the instigator of the riot suddenly went missing and the vampires would be blamed. His body lingered at the edge of death. This was going to take some serious suggesting. To the average human suggestion was easy, simply speak with a certain lusty tone and they were putty in your hands but to a human that is seconds from death, not so easy. His mind was a scattered mess as the body struggled to pump the little remaining blood around. I did the buttons of his shirt up high, enough to hide the bite mark from the other humans. Entering his mind, I suggested to him to stand and walk through the door when I unlocked it and opened it for him. He did as he was told, his body slumping as he stood up.
Stand tall and firm. I disappeared as I opened the door he lifted his body taller, dragging one foot across the tiles. The man on the other side of the door, nodded at him and continued to the cubicle. Completely oblivious to the fact that his skin was greyed and he looked like a zombie from a terrible b grade movie. Slowly he dragged his feet across the tiles and out the door. Move to the smashed window and climb out. I returned to my invisible state, moving to the wall to watch as the zombie moved through the crowd, it parted as he approached. Some had frowns on their faces, some were more oblivious than the man in the toilet. The man climbed up to the window amid the confusion of the other men yelling at him and trying to stop him, he stepped through the broken glass and jumped off the edge.
The other men that were in the room were only a small group, probably about fifty or so. Where the others were I had no idea, most likely still in their dorm rooms. Confusion was still rampant about what they were going to do next, now that their leader was dead. The one that was most vocal seemed the best choice. I entered his mind and softly whispered in the deepest voice I could conjure, telling him to suggest that they end the riot and promise to never do it again. The man spoke the words, the others looked at him like he was crazy for all of about a minute and then they agreed with him. He opened the main door as all of them held up their hands, waiting for the guards to enter and take them into custody. Not that we had a jail. Maybe Jonah might take them to the meeting hall and have stern words to them. As the guards passed through I swanned out of the main doors, knocking someone's shoulder as I passed. Someone invisible. Someone who wasn't among his men. Someone who managed to find me and grabbed me by the arms, lifting me off the ground. I could smell his intoxicating aftershave; it drove me crazy.
Why do you insist on defying me Ivy? I wouldn't call it defiance Jonah; I would call it dealing with the problem before it got out of hand. I could feel the wind moving around me, the land blurring as he took me to the house.
"All I ask is that when we go into lock down you do what you are told." he appears before me "I just want to know you are safe yet you do things like this. What if something happened Ivy? How could I live another day without you? I love that you are a strong independent woman but this is madness. What happens when you are pregnant or when the children are around? Will you still be like this?"
He caressed the edge of my jaw, looking into my eyes, clearly hoping to evoke some loving thoughts in me.
"Do I need to put a tracking device on you?"
"No." I pouted. "I just don't like the way that you think you need to protect me. I am a director of this place too, when something like this happens it's my responsibility just as much as yours, you know."
"I know." he sighed. "Where is our middle road here?"
"Not sure but what I am sure of is that there is one large bath tub upstairs that is calling to me. If you're done playing master of the universe you can join me."
I smugly grinned at him and sauntered through the gate.
