Chapter 15

By morning we were on our little tour. One of the trucks that had gone out recently had found a golf course on their little expedition. They had a brilliant thought and brought back all of the golf carts. Now we had dozens of them for the staff to use. Plans were also in the pipe lines for a miniature train line for the staff that would be living in the new section. We just had to find an amusement park with one that we could pinch. Jonah had already plotted out the track line and the stations, one outside the gate to the housing estate and one in the centre of the buildings. It wasn't really a necessity but he knew it would make life a little easier, especially if it was raining. On the train we estimated it was a ten-minute round trip, to walk it was probably about twenty. He even suggested trying to find another one to put in their estate. Jonah thought it was such a novel thought that he had set the plans for their houses in long lines forming a grid pattern in case he went through with the idea. I knew Jonah all too well, he would find two trains and enough train line to accommodate it. But in the meantime, we had golf carts to trek around the compound in.

Jonah drove Alina, Alex and Lucian around in one. Terrance drove Miranda, Lucas and Scarlett and I had my parents and Elston. Even though he wasn't the first born he still came along for the visit. No one cared, technically he was a first born. He was just unlucky to be a twin, Ariella beating him out. But as I looked around I again wondered why Ariella wasn't here, it was odd, I had expected her to be. She was a first born so she was entitled to visit, she was also dating Lucian. So why wasn't she here? As we slowed down near the farming area, I watched Lucian as he got out from the cart. It seemed like his mind was elsewhere. Maybe things weren't good at the moment, maybe their relationship had hit hard times. I remembered Jonah's words that day in Chuckie's diner, how he didn't like knowing what went on behind closed doors. Was Lucian cheating on Ariella and did Jonah know about it? This we would have to discuss. I wanted to know his thoughts on fidelity.

The afternoon brought the first load of humans. Someone had said there was about five hundred of them with this first load. I knew the place was far too small to accommodate every single human, even if their numbers had dwindled. Buildings were going to pop up like mushrooms. Jonah and his father were already pouring over more plans, spending their nights discussing what options they had, what the witches were able to do. I watched from our vantage point, nestled at the top of the wall. The newly constructed train line stopped right outside the gates. This was the most effective way of getting the humans here from the northern rim. The train slowed at the station that was by the front gate, open and ready to welcome them to their new life. I watched them look at the arid land outside, then gasp in shock at what lay on the other side of the wall. It was like two different worlds.

They were all bright eyed and eager for their new life, thinking that this was a good thing. It was in some respects. They were guaranteed a meal, a warm bed with a roof over their head. All they had to do was visit the doctor on a regular basis. My mother was very nervous when they were brought in to the food hall. One very large and long table full of food had been put out for them, tables had been set up for them to eat their meal. This was Alina's idea, fill their stomachs, make them happy and full then hit them with reality. Once they had eaten they were escorted to the meeting room above the food hall. A slide show was waiting for them of the layout of their area, the entertainment building, the rules that they were to follow and then finally what would be expected of them and what they would get in return. Alina was going to speak to them, this was her baby and Jonah was more than happy to let her speak. Security lined the walls as the humans took their seats, seats that were firmly bolted to the ground so that they couldn't be thrown. My parents were on the side lines behind the curtain with everyone except Alina, Jonah and myself. The head staff were along the back of the stage, Alina was going to introduce them and advise the humans of what they would do for them. She stepped up to the podium and looked out over the sea of faces that watched her. They watched her avidly, her beauty was bewitching.

"Good afternoon, I am Alina Eliade Leonte ruler of the vampires. I am happy to be here to welcome you to the compound as the first of the humans to arrive. Today marks a great day in our history, I hope that together we can rebuild your population and create a more sustainable life for you. Have no doubt that you as a species are in great danger. As your kind entered the northern rim, my people took a tally of those that entered. You should know that because of that figure we have classified humans as an endangered species and as such it is our goal to change that. This place has a goal to create new life, a better life for those already here and to create a working relationship between humans and vampires. Whilst your kind are living here, the vampires will work to rebuild and fix the earth, returning her to her former glory. Work has already begun in the western rim, the eastern rim is due to start within the next month and by the end of the year the southern rim will start as well. Now, we should start with the introductions. To my right is Jonah Waeston and Ivy Nicolai, the directors of the compound. To my left are the staff that will attend to your every need."

She held out her hand to the long line of people.

"General medical practitioners, nurses, dentist, laboratory staff, obstetrics and paediatric specialists, chef. You will also notice there is security staff, cleaning staff, administration and many more. Now moving onto the lay out of the compound. Your area is this rectangle area, there is this building which is known as the entertainment hall. Ground floor has food and we are planning on putting in a few shops, if there is anyone that would like to sell something, please leave your details in the suggestion box at the back of the room. We also have a library, same as what you would be already used to, if you used to be a librarian, please let us know, you can apply for a job." she flicked the button to the next screen "Arcade area, some games are free, some require tokens. Before we get too far on this, we will have a monetary system going, you can get a job, you can donate blood, there are a few things that we can offer you in order for you to earn money. Moving along."

Alina flicked the button again, the next picture showed the segregated building. This was where we would learn how willingly they would accept their new life.

"We have two levels of accommodation at the present. In the beginning you will all reside in this building until we do genetic profiling on you. Once we have determined your line then the options will be given to you."

I looked at the bewildered faces, they were wondering why we were going to do genetic profiling on them.

"You wonder why, don't you? Like I said, you are an endangered species and in order to rebuild your population we must do so in a manner that will sustain you long term. This means that we will ensure that there is no cross breeding now or in the future. Your lineage will be heavily documented as will the children that you create."

I could hear the feint murmurs from the crowd, slowly it was sinking in.

"There will be no unapproved copulating, if you are already married or in a partnership you are to report to the genetics officer at nine am tomorrow morning. You will be tested and your partnership will be approved or not approved based on the findings. If you are unattached you will be entered into the solitary breeding program. This means the men will provide samples and the women will be inseminated with a pre-approved selection. For each donation the men provide they will be given a monetary allowance and the women will be given an allowance for each child she bares. Those that have reached the age where they are unable to bare children can earn an allowance by working."

The plans for the new building shows on the screen when she flicks it over.

"This is a building that is about to be built. When you have conceived a child this is where you will be moved to. Otherwise you will continue to live in the other building, separated from each other. Now, the park lands."

Alina's tone was a little more cheerful as she flicked the screen again. She was about the only one. I could hear the murmurs, the confusion, the anger already beginning to mount.

************************

An hour had passed as I watched the staff register each and every human, getting all of their details, assigning them a number and then finding them a job. Each of the humans were given a pack. I had dubbed them the welcome to hell pack. It listed the rules, the map of their section and a time line of when they were expected to donate. Men were expected to donate once a day and the blood was every two days, for the adults only of course. Children were exempt from any work or donations and their packs contained the days and times they were expected in school. A temporary school would be set up in the meeting hall, they would have to acclimatise to being one large group until something better could be created. It would have to be soon; the next wave of humans would be arriving in a month. Slowly the humans trudged through the line, sat with the staff member and then trudged out of the room. Then they would be shown to their room. The building had been split into sections. Single men in the halved section of the lower levels, the other half assigned to the single women. The upper section of the building had been assigned to those already in relationships. Families with children in one half, childless couples in the other half. Until their profiling was done, this was the way that it had to be.
