Maleficent
Maleficent used to protect the kingdom from dark magic, but no good deed goes unpunished.
Maleficent, Mistress of All Evil. A title that held fear and respect. I was of evil, but not evil myself. I was a resident among Queen Leah and King Stefan’s castle. A respected member of the royal court, much to the 3 Good Fairies; Flora, Fauna, and Merrywether’s dismay. They didn’t have the same amount of trust in me as the King and Queen did. They saw me as pure evil, and only that. No good can from the one with the title, Mistress of All Evil. Yet, I never did the royal couple wrong. I kept dark forces at bay, evil aparations and fiends at a stand still. I helped King Stefan conquer many battles with my magic. I was thought higgly of in the community, the kingdom, and with the royal couple.
They even granted me the gift of a raven, a symbol of battle, protection, and fighting for what one believes in. I was at first hesitant, as I had never had a pet before, but gladly accepted. Naming him Diablo, we become very close very fast, virtually inseperable. After years, the Queen and King's prayers had been answered. The Queen was pregnant with their child. I had immediately taken on a sisterly roll, helping Queen Leah every step of the way. Making sure she was comfortable, getting her favourite treats, making sure her bed was nice and made to her liking. I was geniunly worried about her working too much.
Stress can cause complications, and they wanted that child so bad, losing it would have absolutely crushed them. I wasn’t going to let that happen. I loved them too much to see them so broken. I did everything in my power to protect Leah and her unborn child. I was her Guardian Angel protecting her from all evil. The 3 Good Fairies still had extreme doubts about me. Why would someone so evil want to protect an unborn baby? Sacrifice? Did she want to steal it? The Good Fairies expressed their concerns to Queen Leah and King Stefan day in and day out. The concerns started to eating at King Stefan, no matter how many times Leah tried to call him.
King Stefan sighed, and plopped onto his throne. He rubbed his temples cloding his eyes.
"Maybe they're right."
Queen Leah sat on her throne and put a gentle hand on his arm.
"I don’t know, dear. She has done so much for this kingdom, for us, for me."
He slams his fist on the arm of the throne.
"She could have had us tricked the whole time! Waiting for the moment to strike her plan into action!"
The Queen put her hand on his, undoing the balled fist and holding his hand.
"She’s more concerned for this child than I am."
He pulls away from her. He stands and puts his arms out in disbelief.
"Isnt that enough proof!?"
She stands and puts a hand on his shoulder. She tried to get him to understand where she was coming from.
"She wants to make sure the baby is safe. She doesn’t want anything to happen, this is our miracle child-"
"That she wants to take!"
The King interrupted.
"Dear-"
"Would you rather trust Fauna, Flora, and Merryweather the 3 Good Fairies, or Maleficent the Mistress of All Evil?"
He once again interrupted. She looked at him astonished. Never had she seen him so angry, scared.
"Don’t bring titles into this-"
"My mind is set! Guard call Malefient to the Throne Room."
Interrupting the Queen for the last time.
Queen Leah sat on her throne defeated. She knew when he had his mind set in something, there was no changing him. No matter how hard she tried. I got the message and made my way to the throne room.
When I arrived I stopped before them and gace a respectful bow.
"Your majesties?"
King Stefan rose from his throne.
"We have a new job for you, Maleficent."
"Of course."
I didn't know what else was needed from me, but it could of been of great importance.
"We need you to stay at the Forbidden Mountains. There are forces growing there and we fear they will approach us soon. We don’t feel safe, as the baby is close to be born."
I blinked, completely from shock. The Forbidden Mountains haven't been touched in eons. A place overgrown with thick black thorny vines. Some really powerful magic must have brewing for me to be sent there.
"I understand, your majesty. I can return when the deed is done, yes?"
"We want to make sure it is completely safe for the child. We will give you a formal invitation when we feel that all is calm."
King Stefan told me, confidence flailing in his voice.
"Where will I stay?"
He thought for a while.
"There is the abandoned castle. It may be a little dusty, but I’m sure with your magic you can make it homey. And Diablo will be there to keep you company."
The hesitation and uneasiness in his voice made me feel unsteady. I looked over at Queen Leah. She just sat there, a word nevee leaving her lips.
"And this is your request as well, Queen Leah?"
I asked, hoping she would have a differing opinion. She didnt say a word, just answered with a small nod. The look of guilt stabbing her heart like a blade was plastered on her face.
"Very well. As you wish. I will do my best, I anxiously await your invitation."
I gave a small smile to Leah. I really did wish her well.
"Don’t stress yourself too much, your highness."
She gave a sad smile back. Leah could never hide her emotion like Stefan could, she was a genuine person.
"We wish you a safe journey, your majesty, Godspeed."
Those were the only words that left her mouth, and I could feel each word tremble.
Odd. When I turned, my chest squeazing in on itself as my eyes started to water. I left as tears fell down my face. I wiped them and looked in confusion. Tears? I had never cried before. I was interrupted from my thoughts when Diablo cawed and ruffled his feathers. I pet down his back, soothing him.
"We’ll return soon."
When I left the Queen finally spoke.
"I don’t think we made the right decision."
She sighs and Stefan puts a gentle hand on her shoulder. The 3 Good Fairies who watched the whole exchange, arrived from the other room. They smiled a sad smile to the King and Queen, but deep down they were proud. They didn't trust Maleficent around the King and Queen, let alone a child. The red Fairy, Flora praised them first.
"You did the right thing."
Then the blue Fairy, Merryweather.
"You had to do it."
And lastly the green Fairy, Fauna.
"For the safety of you and your family."
As I arrived to the Forbidden Mountain, after great struggle I got to the the enterance of the castle. Black thorns surround the entire building, hugging it tightly. With a bright green light, the thorns exploded, pieces flew everywhere. A new enterance appeared as the magic light faded. I walked inside the crumbling building, it was lifeless. Drained of any soul and colour. Dull, dark, dusty. Thick cobwobs decorated the black dusty bricks. The floors carpet was a muted purple due to the layers of dust resting upon it. I felt my heart ache, never had I felt so thrown away. Never had I felt like, a monster?
As days passed, I had grown familiar with the castle grounds and what lied within. There were no evil forces to speak of, not even a mouse. Mutiple thoughts crossed my mind once again. It couldnt have been a trick, could it? Did they really just want to get rid of me? All the thoughts swirled through my head. I tried to rationalize them all, to come up with excuses. Anything to change the feeling of confusion, yet all I felt was betrayl. I did nothing but help them and they tossed me away into a run down, dark, forgotten place. A place that no one dared go. A place where I was forever alone.
I hated that feeling, hate started to run through my veins. I still loved them, but I couldn’t understand why they had done this. A poor excuse to leave me behind and I fell for it. I should’ve looked for the signs, but I cared too much for them. I didn’t want to let them down. Weeks passed and no letter arrived, and no dark beings appeared. To distract myself, I made the child a gift. Of course, it couldn’t be used until the child was older, but I was very well happy with what I had created.
A simple spinning wheel to the human eye, but with it’s magic it could create any garment the child so wished. As more days passed, an invitation still never arrived. As I walked along the abandoned and thorned courtyard I heard noises in the distance. Cheers, trumpets, and singing. I quickly ran into the castle, running up the stairs to the tallest point of the castle and looked out on the balcony. In the distance, there was Stefan's castle lit in multiple coulors. Flags hung from every window, women in beautiful gowns, horses wearing colourful garments, and music so loud that the neighbouring kingdoms would hear.
I stared in shock, the Christining! An event so important to the kingdom and I still hadn’t received my invitation to return to the castle!? Not even to an event as important as this!? I put my hand on my chest, trying to calm my breathing. My heart hurt, the feeling was back. The feeling of hate and betrayl. I stormed into the rotted throne room and grabbed my staff. Diablo flew behind me and then landed on my shoulder.
I gave him a little side glance.
"I guess we just have to invite ourselves."
I tapped my staff on the floor and disappeared into a green flame. I appeared back in the throne room of King Stefan’s Castle. Gasps filled the room as everyone stared at me. I glanced at them, sadness flowing through me. They were never scared of me before, I hadn’t changed. Had I?
I looked over at the King And Queen, a frightened look was in their eyes. I smiles soflty.
"Well, quite a glittering assemblage, King Stefan. Royalty, nobility, then gentry, and, how quaint."
I glared over at the 3 Good Fairies.
"Even the rebel."
"Why you-!"
Merryweather stared angrily at me and started to fly at me, only to be stopped by Flora holding her back. She did always have a temper. I looked back at the newly royal parents, trying my best to keep the pain from showing in my voice.
"I really felt quite ditressed of not receiving an invitation."
"You weren’t wanted!"
The annoyed blue Fairy shouted.
I let my mouth open slightly, and put my hand to my chest in surprise.
"Not wa-?"
Not wanted? After everything I did for them? The way they looked at me when I arrived, the way everyone looked at me. They looked at me like I was a monster. It was at this moment all love and care vanished from me. Disappearing like the smoke at the end of a cigarette. My heart hardened and turned cold, the full feeling of betrayl finally seeting in. I chuckled it off.
"Oh dear, what an awkward situation. I had hoped it was due to some oversight. Well, in that event I’d best be on my way."
Leah looked at me, worriedly.
"And youre not offended, your excellency?"
Offended!? She dared to ask that to me!? The one I trusted most!? I smiled coyly, venom creeping it's way out through my teeth.
"Why no, your majesty. And to show I bear no ill will, I, to, shall bestow a gift on the child."
The 3 Good Fairies quickly hovered over the cradle, protecting the baby. I raised my staff and hit it on the ground, glaring at everyone around the room.
"Listen well, all of you! The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. But, before the sun set on her sixteenth birthday-."
The thought of the gift I made for the child came to mind. I had crafted it with such care and delicacy, a fine piece of work for a fine family whom I loved deeply. Though, I tried I couldn’t feel the love and care anymore. I squinted my eyes angrily, now cursing the once beautiful machine into an evil artifact.
"She shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die!"
"Oh no!"
Queen Leah quickly grabbed the child and held her tightly.
The room was filled with my dark laugh. Stefan then turned furious. He held his wife and child closely and pointed to me.
"Seize that creature!"
Creature? That word circled in my mind, and I felt anger boil in my veins. As the guards quickly approached me, I raised my staff in the air.
"Stand back, you fools!"
They came to a halt and I slammed it down, disappearing into a green lighting flash. My laugh still echoing off the castle's walls.
You have made a powerful enemy!
