Chapter 4
Sydney
Its rare when I cry, so this is a very, rare moment for me. Its rare for me to be afraid, so this is an extremely rare moment for me. Its not rare for a girl to turn things into stone uncontrollably. Its not unlikely. It is not nearly impossible.
It is impossible.
Why me? Of all impossible things why am I the exception to the possible? I must be trapped in a bad dream, unable to escape.
But this was no bad dream. It was too real.
"Oh, you're one of the new patients from last night... I was just about to check on a Sydney Calburg. That's you right?" A nurse asked.
Trying to look calm, I nodded. She extended her hand. It was inches away from mine.
"Let's get you back to your room. You must be sore." The nurse said. Her hand millimeters from mine.
"NO!" I screamed and grabbed my hand.
"What?" The nurse asked.
"I'm sorry, but I'm actually not Sydney... um... Calburg was it?"
"But you just said, yes." The nurse protested.
"No, I nodded, respectfully listening to you... so... um... yeah." I said and did a weak smile.
"Okay then. What room were you in?" She asked me.
Can't this lady take a hint? I thought. I can't take her to my room... but I have an idea...
"Well, you probably have to go find that, Sydney Calburg girl... right? So, I'll just be on my way." I said as I turned around and started walking.
"Wait a second." The nurse said and jumped in front of me. "You are Sydney Calburg, you were all over the news! How are you even walking? You shouldn't even be awake, yet!" The nurse rambled.
I made a run for it.
"Hey, get back here, now! I need security!" She said as she took out her radio and started yelling orders into it. She then ripped off her jacket and underneath was a... security guard outfit.
What? My mind screamed. This can't be happening. She's onto me. She saw me turn that doctor into stone, but how? I looked up and saw a camera.
I am such an idiot!
I ran faster ignoring all the pain shooting through my body. I then turned the corner to find two security officers.
I ran into one.
He grabbed me with both arms and spun me around, forcing me to face the security guard I thought was a nurse.
"Stop it! Please, let me go!" I yelled at them. At that moment, I reached behind me and touched the guard's face.
He turned to stone.
The nurse gasped and backed away from me. I started waddling myself out of his arms. I managed to get out as the nurse started calling for more security. The other guard started shouting orders into his radio. When, he saw that I got out of the stone man's grip, he dropped his radio and shoved me against the wall by the neck.
That hurt. A lot.
"Sorry, not sorry." I choked out. And swiped my hand hitting his stomach and kicked him away from me. He fell onto the floor just as he finished turning into stone.
The nurse backed away from me just as I saw more guards coming. I ran faster as they chased me down the hallway.
I hit a dead end at the end of the hallway. I put my hand to the wall making it turn into stone. I kept my hand there as the wall started cracking. The wall started breaking into head sized rocks. The rocks rolled over to where the guards were tripping, them and hitting them in the gut.
Just what I wanted, but also not.
A scream escaped from me as pain shot throughout my body. The rocks then turned into tiny pebbles and fell weak on the ground. I fell on the floor looking at my hands and then at the injured guards on the floor, unconscious.
What have I done?
Callie
"I think we lost them." Sandra said, panting and leaning against a wall in the camera room.
"I wonder why there are no security guards in here." I said.
"I couldn't care less at this point. Good idea, about teleporting us into the camera room. Now we can find Sydney and Nea." Rina said while staring at the computers with a hand on the desk, panting. "Wait..."
Rina sat down in the chair in front of all the computers. "Hey, look at this." She said and gestured for us to look.
"Is that..." Sandra squinted looking at the screen. "... Sydney?" She asked sounding horrified.
"There are so many guards..." I whispered.
"That must be why none are here. But why would they go after her?" Rina asked.
Sandra stayed silent and looked at her hands.
"Sandra?"
"She must have the same problems we do..." Sandra murmured. She glanced back at the screen. "Pause the footage!"
Rina paused it, not questioning anything.
"Now, zoom in." Sandra commanded.
Rina zoomed in.
"Look at the wall." Sandra said.
The footage showed Sydney putting her hand to the wall. It then turned into stone and cracked into different rocks. They then flew out at the guards knocking them unconscious. Sydney opened her mouth—
"Turn up the volume." Sandra said.
"'Pause the footage' she says, 'zoom in' she says—" Rina's ramble got interrupted when a guard opened the door.
I started laughing. This day couldn't get any worse.
The guard stared at us, looking different in the lighting of the room... really different.
I laughed harder.
"Um... ignore her. It's been a long day." Rina said while gesturing to me.
The guard kept staring.
"I thought he would attack us by now." I whispered to Sandra between giggles.
The guard stared.
"Okay pal, staring is rude you know." Rina said getting up and walking toward the... statue?
Rina screamed. And just then someone peeked their head out from behind the statue.
"Oh, Rina, you should've seen your face." Sydney said started laughing. She leaned her hand against the wall. It started turning into stone.
"Sydney!" I said. I don't know if I said it, because I am so happy to see her or, because of the wall.
I'll go with both.
"Nice to see you to." She said looking up, then looking at the wall. "Gosh, dang it!" She said and pulled her arm away.
Rina and Sandra stared, not knowing what to think.
Sandra spoke first.
"Sydney..." She then ran up to Sydney and gave her a hug. Sydney immediately pulled her hands behind her back. They were dripping blood.
Sandra looked at Sydney and noticed she didn't return the hug. She then looked at the wall, and then grabbed Sydney's arms forcing her to show her hands.
"Sandra, stop!" She said and then kicked Sandra away making her fall to the floor. A drop of blood fell on the floor. Sydney looked at her hands. And cried. She fell on the floor and sobbed harder. She made sure her hands touched nothing.
Rina helped Sandra off the floor.
"Sydney, what's wrong?" I asked coming to sit by her.
"Stop, Callie." She said voice ruff from crying. She got up and then pulled the statue inside. When she touched the statue, it added an extra coat of rock. "Dang it!" She yelled and kicked the statue.
"Eep." I said. And blinked and was catching the statue.
Sydney looked behind the statue looking at me. Then looked to where I was. I set the statue back and then blinked back to my spot where I used to be.
Sydney stared.
Sandra looked at Sydney. "We all have it, Sid." She then called up a little flame, then all of a sudden it grew.
"Ah!" Sandra said and then grabbed the bottom of her shirt and snuffed the fire out with it. Now her shirt had burnt marks on it. "Its hard to control, though."
"You can turn it off... I can't." Sydney said. "Also, what are y'all doing in the computer room?"
"We came trying to find you and Nea, with the cameras." Rina said as she turned back to the screen pressing buttons, making it change to different rooms.
"Sydney, we should wrap up your hands..." Sandra said.
"Don't bother, whatever you use to wrap up my hands will just turn into stone anyway." Sydney snapped back.
Sandra was about to say something and then looked at the screen.
"Is that a... bear?" I asked looking at the screen.
"Looks like it..." Sandra said.
Sydney started laughing. "Wow, this day can't get any better. I mean, I almost died escaping guards and now there is a bear... how much you wanna bet that's Nea?" Sydney then laughed harder.
I don't think she's kidding.
I watched the screen as the bear got electrocuted. The bear then turned into a girl. And not just any girl.
Nea.
"I rest my case!" Sydney said looking at the screen then back at the statue. "So, pay up." She turned back to the computers then extended her hand and touched all of them turning them into rock.
"Why would you—" Sandra started.
"Oh, relax. I know where that room is. It was the one next to mine. Do you think you can teleport us there?" Sydney asked.
"Yeah, I think so... was it left or right of your room?"
"Left."
"Alright." She extended her hand toward Sydney.
"I suggest you not to touch my hand unless you want to turn into rock." Sydney said. I then grabbed her forearm.
"Are we ready?" Rina said grabbing my hand and then Sandra's.
"Ow, you shocked me."
"Electricity, then?" Sydney asked.
Rina nodded.
"Okay... that's awesome! Do you you think you can control that taser-laser?" Sydney asked.
"Taser-laser?"
Sydney laughed. "I thought it sounded cool. I was talking about what the guard used to electrocute Nea... Its not funny when you have to explain it."
"We're wasting time." Sandra said through her teeth.
Sydney ignored her. "So is that a yes?"
Rina looked around the room. Then at the Sydney and nodded.
"Are we ready then?" I asked.
The three of them yelled "Ready!"
"Okay, lets do this!" I said.
Then, I blinked.
