Chapter 11

Sydney

"Holy crud," I said as I walked into one of the rooms in the lab. "Are you serious? We're staying in here?" I asked as I gaped around at my surroundings. This. Place. Was. HUGE!

I looked around and saw dark purple walls— the same purple that matched my superhero outfit— and stone statues. I circled the place as all of my friends glanced around, surprised—

"Actually, Sydney, you are staying in here. The rest of you get your own room just like this... but they are accustomed to things you like," Ms. Harriet said as we walked out of, apparently my room, and into the circle hallway. I then noticed each door had our names on it.

We all held our breath as we impatiently waited to see everybody else's rooms. Ms. Harriet rolled her eyes.

"Go crazy, I have things to do anyway," She said as she walked away. She seemed like she was in a hurry for something, but no one questioned.

Rina squealed and ran into the room that had her name on it. Callie gently opened her door. Her eyes lit up and she walked inside. Nea opened her door and ran in and flopped on her bed. I looked at Sandra who was staring at the door to her room. She was looking at where her name is. I looked closer and saw in parenthesis it said, Sapphira.

"Sandra?" I asked.

She glanced at me then opened her door. She slowly walked over to her bed and curled up in a ball hugging a pillow. She faced the wall.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

She didn't respond.

"Sandra—"

"Did you see that flash of light outside? Where Luke went?"

"Um—"

"Girls look at this!" I heard Rina yell from her new room. I turned to go, but glanced and saw that Sandra didn't move.

"You comin?" I asked.

"Just go," She mumbled. Confused, I walked out of her room. Did I miss something?

I walked into Rina's room and saw a waterfall. I tugged on my glove and ran toward it. I saw Rina, Callie, and Nea staring at the water.

"That's so cool!" I yelled.

"Sydney... look at the water," Callie whispered.

I didn't question as I walked up to the water. I looked at the water. "What's the big deal?"

"Do you see your reflection?" Nea asked.

"Yeah, its..." I looked closely at the water. "No."

"Shouldn't we be seeing our reflection?" Rina asked as she put her hand close to the water, but nothing appeared. There wasn't even a shadow.

Callie spoke, "Look." She said as she pointed to the ground. The room was lit... yet there wasn't a shadow. I walked up to a mirror hanging on a wall. I stood in front of it and—

I screamed as I looked at the mirror. "What the heck?" I started panting. It looked like a guy in the mirror wearing a blood red and black suit with red and black eyes. "Please tell me I'm dreaming. Please."

"What is it—" Rina screamed and shot a lightning bolt at the mirror, making it shatter into a million pieces. Then, we heard the echo of a man laughing. I heard someone sprinting down the hallway. There was a scream.

Sandra.

"Sandra—" The lights went out. Rina made lightning wrap around her hand so that we could see. I ripped off my gloves and shoved them in my pocket. I ran out of Rina's room. As I ran, the room grew darker as I ran farther away, trying to find Sandra. "Sandra!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. I started hyperventilating. There was no reply. I grabbed my necklace and transformed.

I heard the same guy laughing. There was something utterly familiar about it... then a random memory came to mind as I recalled when Luke wrapped light around me and laughed as I tried turning him into stone. Remembering, how he slid underneath my fist and snatched my necklace and— A thought came to me.

That's Luke's laugh.

I shook my head. It can't be, I scolded at myself.

All of a sudden, arms wrapped around me and shoved my to the ground. I cursed as the person picked me back up and slammed me to the wall. My face was pressed against the wall, so I reached back trying to touch whoever the person was.

Pain hit me as my arm started shaking and fell at my side. "GIRLS!" I screamed.

No response came.

"They can't hear you," Someone whispered in my ear. The voice so utterly familiar.

"Who are you?" I rasped. I collapsed on the floor. I wasn't unconscious, but so very weak.

"I can't say... but..." The voice belonged to a boy. He didn't sound much older than me as he spun me around, forcing me to look up at him. He then opened his eyes. I tried kicking the person realizing it was the same boy in the mirror with the red and black glowing eyes. I tried looking away from his eyes, but I couldn't. It was impossible. I started thrashing as I was stuck pinned on the ground. What is happening?

My necklace then glowed and went from its beautiful purple to black. It then had red fragments of light glowing inside of it. I struggled to breathe.

What is going on?

Does no one else notice this madness?

I gasped at what felt like my last breath. The boy smirked and whispered, "I hope you enjoy these last few seconds of freedom... because it seems to me that you are about to be consumed by Dark Light."

I felt a tear slip down my cheek as the boy disappeared. I lay there helpless and in pain. I was then blinded by light as the hallway lit up. All of the lights turned back on. The words Dark Light  circled in my mind. I then realized... It was Luke that attacked me. Why would he—

"Sydney!" I heard someone scream. I couldn't make out their name though. I felt myself slipping away. I saw five people crowd around me. I couldn't see their faces I could only see blurs. I then started drifting into what seemed like a deep sleep.

Helplessly being consumed by the darkness that poisoned me.
