Frills and Poisons (Icellama85's Chap.)
Hey, it's icellama85 here. This is the first time I've wrote a fanfiction (other than the Willow of Ages competition). Hopefully this chapter lives up to everyone's expectations! Sorry it's so late as well, I've been really busy with A-Levels and stuff, but I've finally finished it as its half term! Feel free to check out my other (non fanfic) stories if you want to! Here it is, the next chapter of A Trip In Time!
Okay, maybe I shouldn't have tried the whole 'being loved' thing. I seriously did not know what I was in for.
'Ewww!' I screamed at my reflection. 'Why would you even buy me something like this, Lily? You know that I hate dresses!'
'Honestly Willow, ever since that dream that you had you've really changed! You used to love wearing cute dresses, with your hair in little pigtails!' Lily sighed at me, 'and for the last time, will you stop calling me Lily! I am your mother, you know, so you should call me Mum.'
'Whatever Lily. In case you haven't noticed, I have more important issues to deal with.' I said, gesturing to my body.
For some mad reason Lily had decided to go out today to buy me some new clothes, as apparently I was growing out of my old ones. I was expecting something like jeans, jeggings, t-shirts, the stuff that I usually wear. But instead Lily decided to buy me dresses. Just dresses.
The one that I was wearing now was a pale pink colour, with bows scattered around the ankle length skirt and frills hemming the sleeves. I looked about seven. Being stuck in a ten year old's body was bad enough, I did not need any baby dresses to make me look even younger.
'But you look so sweet in this one, Willow!' Lily pinched my cheek, making me recoil back in disgust. 'And look, I got you some pink ballet pumps to go with it! You can be my little princess now!'
So it wasn't just dresses she brought. She got horrid shoes as well. I reluctantly slipped on the flats, knowing that I wouldn't be allowed any pancakes tonight if I didn't. The things that I do for pancakes.
'There you go, all I need to do now is put your hair up in bunches then we'll all be ready to go and visit Sirius for tea tonight!'
'Wait, so we're not having any pancakes tonight? I really wanted pancakes! Can't we postpone tea with Sirius until tomorrow and have pancakes tonight?' I pleaded.
'Nonsense, you know that Sirius is leaving for a week tomorrow, which is why were visiting him tonight,' Lily explained, tugging my hair until it sat in two ponytails. It fucking hurt, you know. 'We'll have a double batch of pancakes tomorrow to make up for it, that sound okay?'
'Fine,' I reluctantly gave in, rolling my eyes in despair. 'You're not making me go out in this horrible outfit though, are you?'
'Yes I am. You wear way too many trousers, it's nice to see you in a dress for once. I can't wait for Sirius to see you like this, the last time he saw you in a dress as cute as this was when you were five!' Knowing him, he'll laugh at how stupid I look. 'Now come on! Don't want to be late to tea!' Lily grabbed my hand and tugged me towards the door so we could go to Sirius' house. I caught my reflection one last time before I was dragged away, which made me grimace in horror.
I seriously could not wait for tonight to be over.
'Aww, Willow, you look so sweet in that dress!' Sirius smiled at me, obviously trying to hold back a snicker.
I glared at him furiously, but it must not have looked cold enough as all Sirius did was laugh and pat my head. Being a four foot nine girl who looks seven seriously has its disadvantages. Why did I have to find this alternate universe to go into?
'She was complaining about it all of the way here, you know.' Lily said, smiling at me fondly.
'What, the whole two seconds it took to apparate from our house to Sirius' place?' I questioned sarcastically. 'Wouldn't you anyway if you were stuck in this get up?'
'Well I definitely would, I don't know about you Lily.' Sirius joked. He managed to get a small smile emerge from my lips, which quickly disappeared when I realized who else was here.
'Hello, Pettigrew!' James greeted the squat man standing in the doorway, 'How lovely to see you again! We must have a proper catch up one day, it's been what, two years since we've seen each other?'
'What the fuck is he doing here?!' I screamed, pointing to the traitor who murdered my parents.
'Language Willow.' Lily warned me.
''he' has a name you know.' Peter sighed.
'Yeah, but I hate you, therefore you don't get a name.' I told him simply.
'Wil, Peter is our friend, why wouldn't he be here?' James asked me.
'I don't know, maybe because he was the backstabbing traitor who killed you and Lily in my dream?'
An awkward silence settled around us, which was soon broken by Lily.
'Honestly Willow, it was just a dream, it wasn't true! Peter's always been your father and Sirius' friend, he's never done anything to harm us! Now why don't you go to the living room and find yourself a nice book to read whilst us grown ups go and cook tea?'
I sighed in annoyance and barged my way though the maze of adults before getting to the living room. When I passed Peter though, I noticed that he looked especially guilty. Maybe he wasn't as innocent as my parents made out.
When I got to the living room, I noticed that it looked exactly the same is it would have done at Grimmauld Place. I wonder what actually happened to that house, not like there's any 'secret' society that's basically known to the whole wizarding world that needs undetectable headquarters.
I also noticed something else in the living room. Well, more like a someone. A man's figure was slumped in one of the chairs, his breath was slow and even. His hair was blacker than when I saw him back in my own timeline, and he seemed healthier and less stressed. My face broke into a grin at the sight of him and, regardless of the consequences, I ran to the man and jumped on top of him, flinging my arms around his skinny neck.
'LUPIN!' I screamed, shaking him so he definitely woke up. That seemed to do the trick, as his eyes fluttered open and a tired smile was soon planted on his face.
'Hello, Willow,' Lupin said. His face obviously showed that he was tired but his voice told me that he was pleased to see me. 'You're really excited to see me, even though it's only been a couple of days!'
Crap. I'd forgotten that I had no idea about my life in this universe. I don't even have fake memories planted into my brain, just my current ones that came from my old life.
'Yeah, well, you're my godfather,' I hope, anyway, 'so of course I'm happy to see you! How's your life been going? Bet it's not as interesting as mine!'
'Willow, did you wake up Remus?' Lily questioned before Lupin could respond. 'You know that his job is wearing him out, you should let him sleep as much as you can.'
Well, there's another piece of information to store in my 'alternate universe' brain.
'Sorry, Lupin.' I told him sadly.
'It's fine Willow, you know that I'm always happy to see you, regardless of how much sleep I've got the night before.' Lupin responded quietly with a yawn.
Lily sighed. This was obviously not the way she wanted the conversation to pan out. She was saved from replying though when James yelled that tea was ready so loud that the whole damn street probably heard him.
'Well, if I hadn't had woke up Lupin, James definitely would have.' I grinned at Lily, and dashed to the table so I could shovel as much food down my throat as possible.
Dinner was chicken and potatoes, which I managed to eat fourth helpings. My appetite really hasn't changed since I became a ten year old again. It took me about ten minutes to devour all of my food, which had to be a record for me.
After I had eaten everything, I went upstairs to the big study without being excused. I heard Lily yell after me, James saying something to Lily and Lily submitting to him with a sigh. I presumed that James had told Lily to leave me alone. Thank goodness for that, as I had some major plainning to do.
I found out a blank notebook, quill and ink, and furiously wrote ideas in there on how to expose Peter as the traitor that he is. The ideas ranged from the stupid to the mildly intelligent. None of them would work though, so I chucked the notebook in the bin and set it on fire, a lot like what I did in my first year. Only this time I knew how to put it out, which I proceeded to do so before anybody smelled smoke. I managed to do all of this wandless, as you know, ten year old me in this universe didn't have a wand yet. I wondered whether I would have the same wand next year, but I shook the thoughts out of my mind when I had an idea.
I snuck downstairs to avoid detection, and then proceeded to try and find where Sirius stored any potions that he had. I was hoping that he had some Veritaserum somewhere, as I really didn't have the time to make any. I mean, it takes about a month to brew it, for fucks sake. Plus there was the slight drawback that I sucked at making potions. The only time I could do them was in exams after reading the entire textbook, which I unfortunately hadn't done.
I somehow managed to find the potions (which were stored in the bathroom for some reason. I mean, what if you really needed an antidote to a poison but someone was having a crap at the same time?) and salvaged around for the potion. Miraculously Sirius did have some Veritaserum, so I stuffed the small bottle in my pocket and walked back to the kitchen.
When I arrived, I saw all of the adults sitting around the table having a conversation, which abruptly stopped when Lupin saw me. Everyone turned towards me at the same time, somehow freaking me out and making me impressed at the same time.
'Hello Willow, come and have some pudding with us!' Sirius said all too happily.
'We have cookies!' Lily exclaimed, showing me the plate piled high with them. They'd obviously just made them with magic to try and get me to sit with them. However, this was the perfect opportunity for me to do what I needed to do.
'Ooh, great, I love cookies! I hope they're chocolate chip though.' I said as I sat back down at the table.
'They sure are!' Lily replied, pushing about five onto my plate. Am I seriously that skinny?
'Thanks!' I said over enthusiastically, 'Anybody for some juice?'
'Yeh.' 'Sure' 'Thanks Willow' the replies came streaming in.
I took the little bottle out of my pocket and held it in my hand as I poured the juice. When I got to Peter's glass, I uncorked the bottle subtly (or as subtly as I could be) and poured the contents in the glass. I know that it's meant to only be three drops, but all of it won't hurt, will it?
I handed the glasses back to their owners, and they all gulped the contents back eagerly. This made me suspicious. Were the cookies really that bad? I snapped the edge off one of them and tentatively placed it in my mouth. They tasted fine to me, not too moist nor too dry.
I was eating the fourth cookie on my plate when it happened. Peter suddenly became unconscious and fell onto the table. The adults started to go crazy and tried to figure out what was wrong with Peter while I was just frozen in my seat. Shit, did I use the wrong potion? Trust me to pick the wrong one. I racked my brains for other potions that were colourless, and I suddenly realised the other potion that was indeed colourless. The one that I made in my sixth year (well, 'made'. I ended up vaporizing it and putting water in its place as I accidentally stirred it the wrong way. I fuck up potions way too often.). The draught of living death.
I started to have a mini panic attack, though the adults must have thought that I was worried about Peter, as Lily put her aarms around me and whispered soothing words to me as the rest of them held hands and apparated somewhere, most probably to St. Mungo's. Is that even safe? Peter could be severely injured and they just apparate, not caring about his welfare.
'Cone on, sweetheart, time to go home.' Lily whispered to me. She took my hand in hers and apparated out of Sirius' place and back to our house. It was obvious that they all thought that Peter had died.
What a wonderful night that was.
***
That night Lily made a huge fuss over me, obviously distraught that her daughter had just witnesses somebodies death; especially because he was her father's friend. She undressed me and took out my bunches, and she didn't even make a fuss when I wanted to wear my old pyjamas instead of the new purple nightie that she had brought me earlier that day.
The bestst thing about the whole 'Peter-nearly-dying' thing though was that I got pancakes. A double batch. And Lily even let me have lots of Nutella over them. Nutella is fucking amazing. Though I'm probably going to get really fat now…
I also got to stay up until past my bedtime, which was apparently nine o'clock for me. It was half past ten by the time I finally got to bed, after eating pancakes and watching a film with Lily. It was rather nice when I was watching the film, as I got to cuddle up with Lily on the sofa, just like an ordinary mother and daughter would. Whilst lying there, it made me think about my second year, when I wished that I was in an alternate universe where I was the Other Potter. It seems like that wish has come true now.
Lily carried me up to bed, tucking me in and promising that everything would be fine. She stayed with me for a little while, playing with my hair and trying to get me to fall asleep. I refused to sleep though, so after half an hour she kissed my forehead and told me to try to sleep, before going to bed herself.
It was then when I let the tears start to pour out of my eyes. Why did my life have to be so fucked up? Why did something always have to go wrong? It was all going fine until I used the wrong damn potion! I'd do anything to back to the beginning of the day. Hell, I'd wear that horrid dress everyday for the rest of my life if it meant that my life would be simple.
The tears flowed for a long time while I let out all of the anger and all of the emotions I'd been holding back. It felt damn good to do so, as by the time I'd stopped crying I felt a lot better about myself. Maybe tomorrow will bring better news and a better day for me. I can only hope.
It was almost midnight by the time I let go and finally fall asleep. But not a dreamless sleep, or even a normal sleep, because I'm Willow, and I never sleep normally. And let me tell you, my dream was full of so many fucked up things that I sincerely hoped that it wouldn't come true…
