Once, I went to the circus

And met the man on the trapeze.

He looked so old and frail

I just had to ask him, "Please—

"Sir, how and why do you swing

On the trapeze at such an age?"

He said he joined the circus young

To see the world and collect a wage.

His friend Vince came into town

To see him flying through the air.

As he was swinging in his act

Vince offered him a dare.

He challenged him to stay

On the trapeze 'til Vince came back.

He accepted the dare without a care,

But Vince never returned, in fact.

So there he remains on his perch—

Sixty-two years on the flying trapeze,

Swinging and waiting for Vince

As he dangles from his knees.

When he's hungry, they throw him food.

When he's thirsty, they spray him with water.

When he's tired, he tries to sleep—

Though he really shouldn't oughta.

When he needs to use the bathroom

And he just can no longer hold,
