Chapter Eighty: Sweetest Heart

"You wanna go out on Valentines day?"
"As long as you don't expect anything crazy from me"

"Zacks here!" I call as I run down the stairs, closing the messages app on my phone as I go.
While standing at the door I fiddle with the top of my jeans, making sure my shirt is tucked in all the way around.
"Thats a lot of Red and Denim," My aunt comments as she walks through the hallway from the living room and into the kitchen.
I glance at the outfit I'd carefully chosen; Blue jeans with red stripes down the side, red high neck tank top, flame patterned shoes and a Jean jacket to top it off. I fiddle with one of the patches on the arm as I want for Zack to knock on the door; he'd texted me to alert me of his arrival earlier.
KNOCK KNOCK
I hear the knocking in the door and pause a moment to move the hair out of my face before opening he door.
"Hey!" I lean forward, giving him a kiss on the cheek and then motion for him to come into the house for a minute.
He kisses my cheek quickly before stepping into the house, extending a boquet of fake roses and small willow branches my way. As I take the flowers in my hands, I see when I look closer that a few of the roses had been made of sheet music that had been dyed red.
"Aww," I smile, knowing my cheeks are becoming a deep pink color, "they're beautiful!"
Expecting that I'd receive flowers, Aunt Marie had already set an empty vase on the shelf in the walkway that I quickly put the flowers into.
"Handy," Zack chuckles.
"Definitely," I nod.
"We ready to go?" Zack asks, looking me up and down with a mischievous smile.
I punch his arm, "ready," I roll my eyes as I laugh, momentarily remembering the sticky mascara on my lashes.
I lead the way out the door and Zack takes a few long steps to get in front of me to open the car door.
I duck down and get into the car, buckling my seatbelt as Zack carefully closes the door.
Zack rushes around the front of the car to get into the drivers seat.
The first moment of the car ride is quiet, only the sound of the radio playing Taylor Swift in the background.
"I know you're not much of a Valentines day person," Zack begins, interrupting the quiet, "but I hope you enjoy today."
"Says the guy who followed me around on Valentines day in middle school," I laugh, "but I hope so too."
Zack chuckles for a second, taking a deep breath before he speaks, "I'm so glad you're back."

As we sit in the drive through of Bean's Coffee Beans waiting for our drinks I can smell the strong scents of different perfumes from the employees inside. The smell of perfume is so strong and distinct I can almost tell which employee is wearing which scent- though my head spends just thinking about it.
"That was too much, even for me," Zack says, waving his hand in front of his nose as we leave the drive through after getting our drinks.
"Let's get to the park," I say, rolling down my window to take a deep breath of fresh air.

"Remember when we'd come here with our gym class in middle school?" I ask, taking a sip of my coffee as I wait for Zacks response.
He chuckles, "yeah, and the time we got yelled at for stopping to look at squirrels?" He directs his gaze at me, obviously reminding me I was the one to blame.
"They were cute!" I say defensively, laughing afterwards.
I take a moment to glance around for squirrels and spot a couple running up a tree, one chasing the other. They seem to be enjoying the holiday-
I glance up to Zack, I'd been looking at my feet most of the walk, "maybe sometime we should come feed the squirrels peanuts or something," I suggest with a shrug.
I toss my cup into a trash can as we pass.
"Maybe our next date," Zack lightly nudges me with his shoulder.
I nudge him back, slightly harder than he'd nudged me.
"Hey!" He laughs, shoving my arm with his hand.
With the hand closest to him, I shove back, grasping the collar of his black jacket as I do. It seems I shoved him a little too hard because his legs come out from under him, tangling mine, and we both fall to the ground, stunned as I land on top of him.
We barely take a moment to laugh before the kissing starts. I've got my hands on either side of his head and let myself lean against him as I dip down into the kiss.
One of his hands is on the back of my neck and the other rests on my back.
After a moment I feel him start to wiggle to prop himself onto his elbows and I begin to pull back, letting my lips out of the kiss. We both take a moment to breathe, still on the ground, me sitting on my knees between his legs and him half sitting up, propped up on his elbows.
"I guess we should get up," he chuckles.
I move the right side of my hair behind my ear for a moment as I nod. My face feels hot and my heart is racing. I'm not sure if it's nervousness or embarrassment or some new feeling, but it's taken the words out of me.
We both stand up, awkwardly walking beside each other as we continue along the trail. What the hell was that? I ask myself.
