◇ ~Chapter Seventeen~ ◇
The smell of rain filled Cayde's nose as he laid helplessly in the mud, tears stinging his eyes and threatening to stream down his snout. Rain pelted down onto him, yet he did not move to seek shelter. His goals to take back their home... his idea of a happy ending... was it truly the right thing? He had been so convinced just hours before that what he was doing was right. He was so convinced that he could rally his pack together, and take back their home... but could he really? Was he wrong? He didn't know.
All he knew was that he was alone.
Perhaps that was for the best.
He closed his eyes, not moving from his spot, far from where he had come from, far from any other wolves. Weakened, devoid of hope, and sad, Cayde drifted in and out of conciousness.
Drift.
A memory emerged in his head. A memory of happily training with Pahanin before the Trial of the Mountain.
Drift.
Another memory. A memory of himself, howling up into the storm-swept skies at the top of the mountain.
Drift.
His arrival at the Shrine of Kimlasca.
Drift.
His sacrifice, and his journey back to the shrine.
Drift.
Racing around the Kimlascan Pack with all of his friends, hearing the cheers of his return.
Drift.
Flames.
Flames..
Flames...
Chaos.
How did it all go so wrong..?
Finally, he slipped into a saddened slumber, cold and weak, and hoped that it was all just a bad dream. But it was not. It was only going to get worse.
Much worse.
His low morale left his mind weakened. His usual hopeful and positive attitude was nowhere to be found, and therefore left his mind open to a far more sinister force than the familiar hopeful dreams of Harmony.
A dream of pure Chaos emerged in Cayde's mind. Perhaps the Wolf of Chaos had breached his mind, seeping Chaos into his dreams to fill the void where Harmony once was.
And so, a dark dream began...
The crackling sound of flames filled Cayde's ears, and he awoke inside of his dream, while his physical form remained asleep. It was like a lucid dream, except someone else was pulling the strings, and he had to watch it all unfold.
His eyes widened, gasping in shock as he looked around to see a ring of flames surrounding him. In front of him, a dark furred wolf with a red and purple aura surrounding their body, emerged from the flames unscathed.
The wolf opened their eyes, and even a simple glance into their eyes sent a pure chill down Cayde's spine. The familiar diamond-like mark on the head of the wolf was more than enough proof to show Cayde who this was.
The Wolf of Chaos. But not Uldrich, the current Wolf of Chaos, no... Mystearica, the original one, from thousands of years ago.
A sinister grin appeared on his face as he advanced towards Cayde, laughing maniacally before he stopped and stood before Cayde, sizing him up and immediately giving an expression to show his distaste for such a weak and helpless wolf.
"YOU... ARE THE LAST HOPE OF YOUR PACK?"
His voice echoed, his voice bouncing off of the wall of flames to echo and boom his voice further.
"I HAVE SEEN MANY GENERATIONS OF HARMONY AND CHAOS,"
"BUT NONE ARE QUITE AS PATHETIC AS YOU!"
Cayde backed away, shaking his head. He tried to yell to Mystearica, telling him to go away, but he could not speak. No matter how hard he tried, he could not speak.
"I PITY YOU."
In front of Cayde, blocking the two wolves off, a mirage of Cayde's home appeared, showing it in flames.
"YOU LET VANDESCELDA DIE."
The mirage flashed to show Vande as he fell off of the cliffside into the flames below.
"YOU LET YOUR HOME BURN."
The mirage showed dozens of wolves fleeing to escape, some whimpering in fear, others fleeing in silence.
"YOU HAVE NOBODY LEFT."
Cayde wanted to scream, to tell him that he was wrong, that it wasn't true, but he couldn't.
"NOBODY BELIEVES IN YOU."
Cayde shook his head in denial, but the mirage showed Anise and the group of wolves, all with disappointed expressions.
"YOU.
ARE.
NOTHING."
Cayde couldn't take it, he wanted to collapse and sob, he wanted this to stop.
"ALL THAT POWER, AND YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A FAILURE."
Cayde collapsed onto the ground, but he could not cry. No matter how sad he was, the tears did not come. He had no control over such a thing.
"BUT YOU COULD BE SO MUCH MORE..."
The mirage dissolved, and Mystearica advanced towards Cayde, grinning wickedly before slamming a paw down on Cayde's head, covering his Mark of Harmony.
Cayde tried to yell again, but he still could not, despite his best effort.
"WITH ME, YOU WILL BECOME CHAOS INCARNATE."
Cayde shook with fear, his vision clouding with a red and purple aura. Mystesrica's paw glowed as he continued to cover Cayde's marking, now radiating with a red aura.
"YOU ARE NOTHING, BUT YOU WILL SOON BE... EVERYTHING."
Mystearica removed his paw, and grinned again as the mirage appeared again, this time as a mirror for Cayde to see into.
The Mark of Harmony was gone, and replaced with the Mark of Chaos, as red and purple energy began to radiate and flow through his bloodstream.
And finally, he was able to scream.
