❝Do you love her?
Yes
How do you know?
Because nothing makes sense without her.❞
- The Age of Adaline (2015)
Dania spent almost the entire night by her mom's side. This was the most she had spent with her in her whole life. Adil was by her side, which she was grateful for, but she had to kick him out before her mother went overboard. Seeing Dania's dedication towards her mother, Salman had slightly softened with his stepdaughter, as in his tone and body language. At dawn, he suggested Dania go home, relax, and come after freshening up. She agreed as she had begun to smell like a hag.
At home, Dania found her thoughts drifting to her mom and her unreasonable desire. This made her even more mad at her boyfriend. Sarfaraz should have been by her side, instead of Adil. But she was glad Adil helped.
After showering, Dania dressed in a navy blue top tugged in beige trousers and secured by a brown leather belt. She adjusted her dampened tresses, drying them with her fingers. Giving up on them, she wore sneakers and a watch and grabbed her bag. In haste, Dania didn't have food and left the place with the driver.
Around ten in the morning, Dania emerged from her mother's ward, rechecking the reports in her hand. Swiftly, she pulled out her phone and searched for Adil's number. Her wandering gaze found a tall man wearing a blue mask in a blue and white floral printed linen shirt and cargo pants. He held a bouquet of mixed colorful flowers. Dania rolled her eyes at him as he waved at her.
Jogging, he got to her just as she was about to turn.
"Dania." He huffed.
She glared at him, keeping the papers against her left arm, - "Sarfaraz."
He pulled down the mask to his chin and flashed his best smile: "Sorry, darling." Sarfaraz forwarded her to the boutique.
Dania kept a scowl on her face, eyed the flowers, then darted her eyes at him.
"Are you even serious about me? Or are other people more important than me?"
Sarfaraz shook his head, - "No, never." He softened his expression.
Dania sighed, resting her weight on her left foot, - "Then, what were you doing with Fareeha?"
He stilled.
"I thought Fareeha was asking for a dress to go on a date with Adil. But what I know, Adil was at home and you, you were with her?" She paused for his response. Sarfaraz blinked at the flowers.
"Who is this Fareeha? She is your manager or—"
"Dania, you are mistaking me. I and Fareeha were listening to few scripts."
"Whole night? And, what does your manager have to be with script reading or narration or whatever?" She gave him a scrutinizing look, - "Don't you think you trust her blindly?"
Sarfaraz shook his head. Dania grabbed the bouquet from him and slapped it back at him.
"She has been working for a long time, toh, it's family connection—" He gestured by connecting his fingers and tugging them.
Dania eyed him top to bottom and flickered her gaze to his face. He pouted, extending the bouquet to her.
"I want to meet mummy and –"
"Mummy?" she taunted, arching her eyebrow.
Sarfaraz blushed, - "Obviously."
Dania sighed exasperatedly, before looking away. Her eyes caught a ring glimmering on his middle finger. Mindlessly, she turned, - "Come with me. I will try calling Adil." Speaking, she took out her phone from her trouser pocket and checked. Sarfaraz furrowed his eyebrows tightly, his BP rising.
"I don't know what to do with these boys?" Hadiya held her forehead, making a face. The maids arranged the food at the table.
"One left God knows when, and the second is running off as though his butt is on fire." She complained, arranging the pallu of her saree, and sat down at the table.
"What to do, Baji? These boys, once they become adults, leave their mother's nest." An older maid commented, placing bread on her plate.
Just then, Haya hurried past them, having ear-buds stuck in her ears. She didn't hear her mother calling after her.
Hadiya pressed her lips, looking up at the older woman, - "Kya kare, Hajra, even daughters." She gestured with her hand.
Hajra shrugged. Hadiya smiled, picking up a butter knife.
"Then, there is Fareeha. She is the perfect daughter. So calm, intelligent, beautiful, wise and—" She sighed, buttering a piece of bread in her hand, - "I am desperate for her to be my Hadi's wife."
Hajra smiled, - "In shaa Allah, Baji. Don't worry. Those two can't live without each other, anyway."
Hadiya nodded, - "Hajra, you have been with us for more than a decade. Even if you can see the obvious, then why not them?"
Fareeha walked in, carrying a black purse, and a worried look plastered on her face. Hadiya's face brightened upon spotting her.
"Fareeha, beta, come join us."
She stopped. They shared a brief look. Hadiya retracted a little in her seat. The hurt in her eyes was still fresh and guilt resurfaced in her chest.
She lightly rose from the chair, - "Beta—"
Fareeha glanced away, clenching her purse she hastened towards the stairs.
Adil emerged out from the bathroom, buttoning his jeans, and swiftly picked up his shirt from the bed. There was a knock.
"Yeah!" He adjusted the collar, rushing to the mirror.
"Hi, Fareeha."
"Come in." He replied distracted. She walked in but he didn't spare her a look. Fareeha stood for a moment, watching him apply cologne to his bare chest and underarms.
"Hey!" Adil turned and nodded at her, speedily buttoning his checked shirt.
"You—are going somewhere?" Fareeha hesitated. She had thought it might be for Dania, and her heart sank.
"Yes." He sat at the edge of the bed, and wore his socks, - "Dania called."
Fareeha rolled back her lips, entwining her fingers.
"Her mother is asking for me." His tone was worrisome. As he walked past her, she stopped him.
"Hadi is with her."
Adil paused, and turned to face her, - "So?"
"So? Adil—" She marched to him and looked boldly into his eyes,- "He is her boyfriend. Who are you to her? Leave them."
"But—"
"Listen," Fareeha spoke agitatedly, - "I have ruined my life running behind Hadi. So, I am telling you from experience, leave them."
"But she called—she might need—"
"She has got her boyfriend. She will be fine."
"Yes, but Hadi isn't a doctor. I am."
He turned to dash out of the room.
"Dania isn't the only woman in the world, you know," Fareeha called over his shoulder. Adil stopped in his tracks.
Slowly, he turned around. His face was puzzled. Fareeha walked towards him.
"She is committed, you are wasting your time. Instead—" She inhaled deeply and held his hand in her subtly shaky grip.
"Look around, there is someone who desires you. Who is waiting for you and—loves you."
Adil's heart raced. He knew what she was hinting at. But it was wrong because he also knew that it was not him she was talking about.
"Adil, I really love you. It took me the whole day to muster courage and—" Fareeha froze. Her throat was dry and every inch of her body trembled with anxiety.
"I want to spend all my life with you." She fumbled with her purse and took a silver wedding band, - "This is my dad's—" She smiled nervously. Then looked up. Tears glistened in her eyes and was about to kneel when Adil held her shoulders.
"Fareeha, I—"
"Please don't say no. Everything depends on you."
Adil wiped sweat off the side of his forehead with a hanky and nodded. He took a deep breath. The hopeful look in her eyes made it difficult for him.
"These things take time. How can I say anything just like that? I don't want to hurt you. Fareeha, please give me some time. And, now, is not the time. I am in a hurry." He explained calmly.
Fareeha lowered her eyes, darting her gaze to the floor. Adil patted her upper arm and hurried. With tears brimming in her eyes, Fareeha watched him go. She wanted him to accept her and make her stop thinking about last night's "accident."
No matter what, she couldn't shake it off.
Sarfaraz's mind flipped when Dania revealed that her mother wanted her to get married to Adil. Her last wish.
"Why didn't you tell her you are committed?"
"To? A movie star?"
"Are you even serious about me, or doing time pass."
"Excuse me?"
"Dania, I am sorry—I—" Sarfaraz held her hands.
Now they stood outside the ward. Meeting Faryal wasn't very thrilling. Dania introduced him as just a friend, but a superstar couldn't impress her.
She caught him off-guard when she said, "You look familiar." She paused to think, then added, - "Are you Hadiya Khan's son? You have a solid resemblance with her."
Dania squinted her eyes at her mother, shrugging, - "Who is she?"
Faryal spoke meekly, - "Arey, that wannabee woman who always forced herself into the high society woman's group. That one, who was so desperate that she slept with anyone and everybody for fame and money. And she kept sleeping with that sleazy producer until she got pregnant and they had to marry. I doubt if her baby was even of that man. Very characterless that woman. So, will be her son, of course."
Sarfaraz clenched his fists behind his back and answered with a straight face, - "No, Aunty. I don't know her."
Dania rolled her eyes, - "How does that matter? Ma, you are ill. At least speak nicely of people now." She taunted with a fake smile.
Faryal smiled slightly, - "It is the truth. Anyway, who cares? Where is Adil? When is he coming?"
Dania moved her hands from his grip and turned away. Her body language relaxed seeing Adil hurrying towards them, behind him Fareeha struggled to tag along. Sarfaraz mentally face-palmed. Sometimes, with his best friend, he gets secondhand embarrassment.
Dania mindlessly pushed past him and rushed to Adil. Without giving him a chance to speak, she held his arm and dragged him along with her.
"Ma is desperate for you. Why couldn't you come early?" She reprimanded him, taking him inside the room. Sarfaraz gaped at them, but he was ignored. Turning front, he met Fareeha scowling at the door.
He marched towards her and huffed, placing his hands on his hips, - "That woman never leaves a chance to embarrass me."
Fareeha kept staring at the door, angry tears burning her eyes.
"Dania, her mother, everyone taunts me because of her. Now, if her mother comes to know about my real identity, she will reject me."
Fareeha turned her head, - "Hadi. You are talking about your mother. Tameez se." She warned him.
Sarfaraz rolled his eyes, - "Has she done anything to demand tameez? Mamu had assured her, na, that he would launch me and help us. Didn't he? Then who asked her to go and—and sell herself."
"Hadi!" Fareeha raised her voice, then clenched his arm tugging on it, - "Are you out of your mind? She is your mother, and you are speaking nonsense just for that no-good Dania." She leaned closer, glaring into his eyes, - "You call me despo for Adil. What are you then?"
Sarfaraz yanked his hand from her hold, - "What wrong are people saying, you tell me? And, and, that stupid tharki Aashiq Mastana—Nabeel Rauf—manipulated her—and didn't she willingly—" His voice cracked, tears dropped from his eyes. He flickered his tears, and lowered to come face level to her, - "And, that is why I hate that Adil—and you should too. He is more wrong than Dania."
Fareeha frowned, - "That doesn't even make sense. Why are blaming Adil?"
Sarfaraz pulled his arm from her hold, looking away, - "Get lost." He turned, - "Like Father, like son."
Fareeha came around, facing him, - "Aunty did what she thought was good. Being a single mother, that too so young and beautiful, it is diff—"
Sarfaraz glared at her. She sighed, - "But what is Adil's fault in this? I am not saying because I like him, but think with an open mind. He also doesn't endorse his father's actions. For your mental peace—"
"Dania's mother wants Adil to marry Dania." Sarfaraz agitatedly interrupted her. Fareeha shut her mouth, flinching her head.
Softly, her jaw dropped.
"Ji, haan!" He emphasized. Fareeha shook her head.
The room's door opened, and Dania and Adil came out. Sarfaraz and Fareeha looked at them. While Dania had a serious expression, Adil relaxed himself.
"Guys, let's all four of us go for dinner this weekend. My treat." He announced with an air of lightness. It didn't make any difference to the gloomy faces, so he motivated them, - "Come on, guys, life is too short to take stress every time. And, I promise, the entire bill will be on me. Also, if you want, we can add some other interesting stuff."
Fareeha glanced at Sarfaraz from the corner of her eye, then nodded, - "Okay. I am in."
Sarfaraz hurriedly looked at her, - "Me and Dania too."
"What?" Dania was taken aback. He smiled, clasping her hand in his, tightening their joined fingers, and confidently announced, - "Yes."
Adil smiled, seeming unaffected, - "Cool, then."
Dania agreed asnothing mattered to her at this point. Moreover, it will give her a nice break.
