Chapter 17: Explanation
You basically told him what happened all those years ago.
You were very thankful for your boyfriend who was patiently listening to you as he held your hand. He was reacting to the way you wanted him to react. When you were finished he gave you an encouraging smile.
"Y/N, you have grown so much all these years. I know we just met like two months ago, but I feel like I've known you long before that. Your parents are here now, so what? Now you're old enough to tell them what to do, right?"
You sighed. "Yeah, you're right. You should go down now. God knows what they'd think about us not coming back for like... almost 30 minutes now. I'll be there in a second."
"Okay. I'll be waiting," Dipper replied. He then looked hesitant for a moment and you stated at him. You were going to ask him what was wrong until he silenced you with a chaste kiss.
Your eyes widened as you can still feel the taste of his lips. "What-"
"I'm sorry, I can't help it." Dipper cut you off.
"It's okay. You should go down and try talking to my parents." You insisted and he nodded, with a forced smile on his face. You giggled a bit at his expression before leaning in and giving him a kiss as well, only this time it lasted longer.
You pulled away, and Dipper chased your lips, making you chuckle.
"Dipper," you said between your laughs. He joined in, not before a blush overtook his cheeks, muttering an apology. "You have to go. I just need to freshen up. We'll continue this later, okay?"
"Okay," he dragged out the last syllable and stood up, walking towards your door.
You let out a sigh when he was gone and actually began to fix yourself.
Meanwhile, when Dipper skipped down the steps, he immediately took notice of the couple sitting down around the table, while Stan was offering them what's inside his fridge; which only contained orange juice, almost-expired carton of milk, 2 eggs, and half a pear.
Dipper heaved a deep breath and let himself known by clearing his throat.
"Ah, Dipper!" Stan said rather loudly, trying to hide the awkward sweats forming on his forehead. "I'm glad you're here. Meet-"
"Y/N's parents," Dipper said blankly. He nodded at the two professionally. "I've heard from Y/N."
The man, who was looking at the brown-haired boy with narrowed eyes, spoke "Who are you?"
Dipper raised an eyebrow. "Like he said," he gestured to Stan. "I'm-"
"I mean, who are you to my daughter?"
Dipper almost choked out but he smoothly hidden it with coughing a bit to his fist. "Uh-" he stuttered out. Should he tell them? He wasn't sure if he should. They were your parents after all, so you should be the one to announce-
"Answer my question, boy." Harold seethed, his fist opening and closing on the wooden table. "Who are you to my daughter?"
"He's my boyfriend, dad."
Dipper looked behind him and saw you just coming down the stairs, your hands inside the pockets of your hoodie. He beamed at the sight of you, and you smiled back.
"Boyfriend?!" Three voices; one was from a man, one was from a woman, and one was... high-pitched and pre-pubescent?
The both of you turned to look at the sweater-knitting girl arriving by the doorway, looking as if she just ran a marathon. She dropped all the materials on the floor and sprinted in front of you.
"You two are finally together?!"
You and Dipper shared a knowing look and the boy beside you nodded. "Yeah, we are. For about a month now..."
"A month?!" Harold and Mabel exclaimed in unison. You watched your mom, Sharon, tried to calm her husband down, whispering comforts.
Your father had placed a hand on his chest, wanting to steady his heavy breathing. "But you can't! This can't be!"
"You can't tell me what to do," you sneered.
You saw Mabel playfully punching her brother in the shoulder, all the while Dipper was pushing her away. "Why didn't you tell me?!" Mabel whined. "I have been waiting so long for my ship to be canon!"
"Okay, Mabel, we know they're together, blah blah," Stan chimed in. He walked towards his great niece and pushed her by her shoulders. "Now, let's leave the room and leave the talking to them, okay?"
"Wait!" Mabel exclaimed, no match for her grunkle's strength. "I have so many plans! Wait-"
Stan closed the door.
That left the four of you.
You and your parents seem to have a staring contest, waiting for the other one to just snap, while Dipper beside you was getting sick of the awkward silence.
"Okay," Dipper started. "Who gets to talk first?"
"I'll go first." You took a seat of your own, crossing your legs as you did so. Dipper didn't want to sit down himself, as he was feeling kind of antsy. "I'm just going to ask; why?"
"Why what?"
"Why did you leave me and never return? Why now?"
Harold sighed. "I guess we have to tell you our side of the story, huh."
"No duh," you said, crossing your arms. "You kinda have to? How else would I understand?"
He ignored your sarcastic comment and began, "When I found out that your mom was going to give birth to your sister, I just panicked. I couldn't think straight."
"We thought she would come a bit later," Sharon added.
"And when your little sibling did come out, we found out that giving birth in an hospital could be so expensive. I guess everything changed since you came out.
We just noticed that you weren't there when we didn't see you in that hospital. We were so worried, Y/N. We thought we lost you forever.
After we went home, we traced back to where we had gone to and figured that we left you in Gravity Falls, Oregon.
We tried going there again but because of the hospital bill and your sibling's needs, we couldn't."
Sharon fiddled with her fingers. "And it was so hard to go on each day without you, dear. Knowing that we left you in this- strange, suspicious house, with an old, cruel-"
"He wasn't cruel," you cut off. "Stan was good to me, he took good care of me. Better than the two of you could've done all these years."
"And we're glad it wasn't what we suspected!" Harold said. "We thought you wouldn't be able to survive in this town, but we always knew you're an independent girl. We're glad you're safe!"
You were quiet, deciding to look at the ground. "How's Sam?" You said after a moment, referring to your sibling.
"They're doing great, sweetie. They're with the housekeeper." Sharon answered.
"Oh, so now you could afford a housekeeper."
Harold nodded. "Yeah... so now that we're a bit stable, we just want our daughter to come home with us."
Dipper watched the conversation with wide eyes. He didn't want to talk, because he knew you could speak for yourself. But he didn't want you to go home so suddenly. He saw your brows furrowing, he wanted to know what you were thinking of right now.
"No."
"What?" Sharon gasped. Hearing you decline such an offer made her heart break.
She and Harold shared a sad look. "Y/N, please. You have to understand, please think about this."
"I already did, and my answer is no."
Sharon stood up, her fists at her side. "You can't do this to me, I am your mother!"
You didn't say anything. You idly stood up and exited towards the kitchen, while your parents followed you, almost on their knees.
"Y/N L/N, you listen to me. We're not going anywhere until we can take you back home." Harold stated firmly.
You stopped in your tracks and sighed, your back still facing them. "Fine."
They gasped, a hopeful smile taking over their faces. "Really?"
You smiled as well, turning to them. "You're staying here forever, then."
"Y/N!"
You said their name the same way they screamed yours.
"At least tell us why you don't want to go. Was it because of what we did? We're sorry, okay!"
You sighed. "Mom, Dad, you're forgiven. But I still don't want to go. I'm already happy, with my new family now. They supported me all these years until I was finally okay. I know you said you guys are fine and stable now, but please consider my feelings too and believe me that I don't need to go back home just because you came here to rescue me. If you're stable, so am I. Isn't it better to just let me be? You can still visit me every now and then, if you like, but my decision is final; whether you like it not, I am staying in Gravity Falls. Please respect that."
That seemed to shut them up, and you were proud of yourself for coming up with such a thorough and well-constructed speech. You gave them a pleading smile before deciding to exit the kitchen, with Dipper in tow.
"How was that?" You turned to Dipper, once the two of you were alone.
Dipper blushed, his mouth slightly agape. "Y/N... you," he shook his head. "You were awesome back there!"
You smiled at him, blush covering your cheeks as well. "Really? Did you see the look on their faces? It was priceless!"
"Are you really staying here? For good?"
"Yeah," you said with no hesitation. "If Stan wants me to..."
"Of course he wants you to stay, he basically treats you as his own daughter now."
You laughed. "Ew, don't put it that way. We're dating, remember?"
"Oh," Dipper mumbled, making you laugh even more.
"Well, should we continue?" You suggested, raising an eyebrow.
Dipper raised an eyebrow of his own. "Continue what?"
"Ugh. You know; for a smart person, you can be dumb sometimes."
"Only when I'm with you."
"-and cheesy." You rolled your eyes, but before Dipper could say anything, you already leaned forward and captured his lips with yours. You felt him sigh in content and you giggled, but you continued kissing him.
Just as Dipper began to deepen the kiss, he heard someone clearing their throat rather obnoxiously. The two of you jumped away and saw Mabel wearing a wide smile, her hands on her hips.
"Finally! Took you both so long to notice me here!"
You smiled at Mabel's energy. Whenever you're down, she's always there to cheer you up. You just wish she could pop up in right timing.
Mabel held her hand together. "You're finally a thing! Congrats!"
"Uh, thanks?" "Thank you?"
"I invited Candy and Grenda for a celebratory slumber party and they're coming here tonight!"
You let out a deep, tiring breath, while Dipper groaned loudly. "Do I have a choice?"
"Of course not! This celebration includes the both of you exclusively! The two of you must join."
"Sure. Sounds like fun." You nodded at Mabel. You didn't want to shoo her away. She means well.
"Great! Come on, Dipper, help me set for the party!" Mabel began to pull her brother away from you, his heels sliding on the floor.
He tried to escape, but with his lanky arms versus his sister's brute strength plus passion, it's an instant loss. "Wait! I have to-"
"It's okay, Dipper." You called out. "I'm going to talk to Stan anyway. See you later!"
"I-"
You couldn't hear the rest when they reached the second floor. You began to search for Stan, not forgetting to go back to the kitchen, where your parents were. Your eyebrows furrowed when you saw that they weren't there. Where could they be?
You strolled around the house in hopes of finding either your parents or Stan. While doing so, your mind couldn't help but float. It was as if your mind itself couldn't believe the fact that your parents are finally here. It was as if your mind still hasn't move on even after the confrontation.
You finally heard voices coming from a door. Stan's office.
You couldn't bother them right now because it sounded like they were talking about something important. You placed your ear next to the door. You could hear out some of the words, but most of it weren't clear.
"Please... just... summer..."Harold.
"It's... yeah, it's nothing... problem...." Sharon.
"I'm really sorry... then... about it..." Stan.
Your forehead creased in worry and confuse. Should you go in and intervene? It seemed like you were the topic of thee conversation, since that was the only connection your parents and Stan ever had.
You couldn't be bothered to knock on the door, so you let yourself in.
You saw their eyes following you as you gently closed the door. "What's the matter?"
Stan explained, "They just came here to ask where the nearest hotel is, because apparently, you told them to stay here for the summer!" His voice grew louder.
"Relax, Stan, They can stay in my room."
"What about you?"
"I can stay at the twins' room..."
"Wha-"
"Let's go, mom and dad!" You pulled them out of the room, before Stan could say anything. You lead them to the second floor, until you eventually reached your door. "So, this is where I sleep." You opened the door and stood at the side, leaning on the wall and crossing your arms, letting them wander and judge your decorations. You were grateful that Stan allowed you to sleep at the one room with a good bed. It's not that big of a bed- it can fit two people at most- but it's the most comfortable bed in this house. Yet, having this room all by yourself can be a bit lonely sometimes, so that's the only downside of it.
You watched your parents made themselves more comfortable. They were a bit skeptical, but eventually they looked cozy, because they now found the smell and ambiance of your room comforting, and that's what they need right now.
"Your room is very lovely, dear," Sharon noted.
You nodded in thanks. "Where are your things?"
"They're at the car."
"I can help you get it." You pushed yourself off the wall and began to walk out the room.
"We can get them later."
You stopped in your tracks and just stood there, already noticing the awkward situation. "Uhm... so, you were already prepared for this? You know, staying for the summer, since you've brought your things?"
"Yeah, we thought this could be a possibility, but we didn't really put that much thought into it so we only brought a few clothing."
You hummed in reply. "Okay, well, feel free to do whatever you like. You know you're forgiven and I don't hate the two of you anymore. You both know that, right?"
They nodded in unison. "Thank you, Y/N."
You smiled at them, slightly lifting your arms. "Y'wanna... hug it out?"
Sharon didn't say anything and bounded towards you, engulfing you in a huge, warm embrace, almost beating Mabel's own hugs. You let out a squeak, but managed to hug your mother back. You craned your neck at your dad, who was just sitting there. You stretched your arm towards him and he took it, his own arms wrapped around the two of his girls.
You sighed in content. You could still remember the feeling of their hugs. It was good feeling before, and it's a greater feeling now. You had talked it out, you forgave each other, now you're hugging it out. It feels good.
Feels really good.
