Chapter 16: What A Surprise
"Come on, hun, wake up! We're here!" The h/c -haired woman exclaimed, watching the sights pass by in their car window after a 55-minute drive.
The little girl in the backseat rubbed her weary eyes with the heels of her hands. "But I'm still sleepy..."
"Oh, buttercup. You don't wanna miss the sightings of Gravity Falls, Oregon!" The driver of the vehicle encouraged. "We can go camping by the woods, interact with the people and buy presents for your friends!"
"Oooh, can I buy a pig, dad? Me and Kelly always wanted a pig! We wanna name it W-"
"Of course, darling, you can buy anything. Speaking of presents, Harold, there's a gift shop over there. We should make a stop first, I don't think I could hold on any longer." The woman expressed, referring to the bump on her stomach... or maybe her bladder.
Harold nodded and turned right, parking right outside the nice-looking shack. He turned the vehicle off and went around, opening the door for his wife. The little girl had opened her own door and followed the two adults on their way to the gift shop.
When they opened the door, a man in his 60s (but still rocks a suit with shoulder pads) greeted them with a wide smile on his face. "Hello, cash- I mean, customers! Welcome to Gravity Falls' center of attraction; The Mystery Shack! Can I interest you in some keychains, snow globes? These rare photos of American presidents?
"Uhm, yeah, thank you for the offer- but my really pregnant wife needs to go to the restroom. Where is it?"
The smile was wiped off his face and he grumbled. "Right this way."
The little girl watched the three turn into a corner, the old man leaving himself out as he let her parents go their own way. She only stood there, seeing the same fez guy walking towards her.
"Hey, kid. Y'wanna buy something until your parents get back?"
"Can I have a pig please?"
The grey-haired man sighed, walking away from her, clearly annoyed that these customers weren't there to buy his merchandises. The girl only watched him, shrugged, and began to wander aimlessly around the shop. She saw other people looking with wonder at the creatures displayed. She was amazed with the different products and thought what to buy for her neighborhood friends. She noticed a slightly chubby man (although he looks like a gopher) in a grey hat standing by the cash register looking all silly, yet welcoming.
"Hello," she said, taking small steps to the counter.
"Hi, little girl. I'm Soos. Do you want to buy a t-shirt? Or a candy? I promise you, if you press C-5 in that vending machine, you'd get to taste this amazingly-amazing-"
"You talk too much. Can I buy a pig?" She asked with wonder in her eyes.
"Uh- sorry, but we don't sell pigs here. You can wait for the town's fair if you want. I can take you there someday."
"No, I don't live here..." She shook her hair, her pigtails following. "I could ask my parents-"
"Oh my God, get out of the way! My wife is giving birth!"
The both of them turned to the man carrying the woman off her feet and running towards the door. The people around them were slightly panicking and huddled by the door, trying to help the couple as they made their way to the car.
The little girl struggled to pass by the horde of strangers but it was difficult when they are blocking the exit, trying to look outside. She didn't know the residents of this town were quite intrusive. "Let me through!" She tried to plead, but the people were stubborn. "Mom! Dad!" Her screams blended with the gossips and opinions.
"Alright, shows over!" She heard the owner announced. "If you're not here to buy something, get out or face the wrath of my wet mop."
The small herd of people slowly dispersed, until the little girl was all alone. She finally saw the parking lot, and the car was nowhere to be seen. "Mom?" She croaked. It was as if time stopped and she already found out that she's all by herself. Without her parents, she's all alone in this town she never even heard of.
She did the one thing she was good at.
She cried.
"Mr. Pines!" The guy, who was now mopping the wooden floor, yelled. "The little girl is crying!"
The old man, or Mr. Pines, quickly came to her aid. He quickly recognized her as the child of the pregnant couple."Shh, shh, kid. Don't cry."
"I want my mommy and daddy!" She wailed.
Mr. Pines scratched the back of his neck. "Uh, well- they had to- uh, go to the hospital so your little- you know what, nevermind."
"Why did they leave me?"
"They leave you here with me for the summer!" He tried to lighten up the mood and not let her worry about the current situation.
"I-I don't even know who you are!"
"You can call me Stan, kiddo. And from now on, I'm the one who will take care of you. But I'm not letting you live here for free..."
"What?" She didn't hear the last part.
"No worries. You have to work for me, and in return I'll let you stay. Is it a deal?"
She nodded, not knowing what will happen in the future, but she could now trust this man over the monsters who just left her there without another thought. "Thank you, Stan."
"No problem. What's your name again?"
"Y/N."
"Okay, Y/N."
////
A month had passed after the encounter with the Gremloblin. Through all the week, you and Dipper hanged out with Mabel as usual, but you didn't let her know that the two of you are already together. She was too... unstable, and besides, Dipper had been the one who suggested it so you went along with it. She couldn't take a hint.
It was a typical day, like any other day and you found yourself in front of the TV, contemplating if you could watch some random documentary or not.
Dipper walked in without you noticing. "Something on your mind?" He offered, deciding to sit next to you on Stan's yellow chair.
You only sighed. "It's nothing of importance. Don't worry about it."
"Y/N..."
You sighed once more, feeling defeated. "I've been... thinking about... my parents." You turned to him, seeing him frowning. "I mean, I think about them everyday, but today..." You shook your head dejectedly, "Years ago, my parents left me here without saying goodbye or letting me know why, and- uh, it hurts." You pushed back the tears forming in your eyes.
He sighed. "I'm so sorry this happened to you. You don't deserve to be left alone just like that."
"Yeah," you said lamely. "It sucks, but look on the bright side; if it weren't for my parents leaving me here in this town, I wouldn't have met Stan, Soos, Wendy, Mabel, and, you." You smiled.
He chuckled, "Oh, Y/N. I'm the one who's supposed to comfort you..."
"Come on, Dipper," you cooed. "You love me."
You froze, realizing what you said. You knew it was too early; it was only a month for crying out loud, but you couldn't help yourself. Even before the two of you were together, you already fell for him. You just hoped he felt the same way too.
"I do." Dipper gave you an assuring smile. "Do you... feel the same?"
"Yeah," you said rather quickly. He nodded and the both of you fell into comfortable silence, just staring into each other's eyes. "Dipper," you muttered. He didn't say anything, just nodding you to continue. "You won't leave me, right?"
He shook his head immediately. "Never. You can trust me."
You nodded. "I'm glad." Dipper leaned forward and you closed your eyes, but just as your lips brushed against each other, a loud knock interrupted it.
The two of you jumped apart, groans leaving out of your mouths (Dipper's was louder) before they knocked again.
"Somebody get that door!" You heard Stan exclaim from the other side.
"I got it," Dipper tried to hide the annoyance in his voice but you quickly caught on to it, letting out a small giggle as you watched him walking towards the door begrudgingly. He opened it, revealing two young adults, probably in their early 40s in front of him.
The woman smiled at him a bit. "Does Stan Pines live here?"
"This is his nephew, what do you want?"
He didn't want to be snarky, but the moment he saw the woman's eyes and the man's nose and hair color, he just knew. First they interrupted your moment, then they really have the guts to show up here?!
"Uh," the man stuttered, surprised that he was actually scared of a 12 year old. "We came here for um-"
"Dipper?" You called. "Who is it?"
"Could that be..." the woman in front of him feigned a hopeful expression.
"Is that her?"
Dipper was on the verge of panicking and on his way to close the door, if it weren't for you walking towards him, being curious. "Can we help you?" You said to the two flabbergasted people. The moment you saw their faces, you took a step back. It was as if you saw two ghosts reappear in front of you even after the years.
"Y/N-"
"Don't say my name."
You didn't feel scared, you felt threatened. Why did they suddenly return after all those years. They could've come back in all the times you needed them, but they only decided to go now? Now that you were happy and stable?
"What are you doing here?"
The man sighed. "We came here to get you."
"No," you said immediately. "NO! You don't get to just take me back after all these years!"
"Sweetie, please understand that we have tried everything to get you back home."
"No, no, no. I won't let you. You have no right. You can't-!"
Stan came in. You didn't know if you were glad that he had come in and stopped you from bursting into flames, or annoyed because you wanted them to hear your feelings.
"Now what the heck is going on here? Y/N, if you're going to fight with someone, you could've called me so I could film- oh!" Stan fought the glare forming around his eyes when he saw the two adults who had unanimously broke your heart. "Come in, I guess."
You rolled your eyes at Stan's fake smile. You could almost see his eyes that screams 'I want to use my bronze knuckles at these jerks'. You wanted to smirk, but your eyes were clouded with anger right now that you couldn't even think straight. "I'm going upstairs. Excuse me."
"Y/N, wait!" You heard Dipper calling after you, but you didn't stop walking.
He followed you until you were by the door of your room. You let out a sigh when you realized that he wasn't going away any sooner. "Dipper, I can't right now. Please leave me alone for a moment."
"Y/N, I can't. You don't have to face this alone, you know. Didn't I promised you that I won't leave leave you? I'm going to fulfill that promise 'til my very last breath."
You couldn't help but sob at his sentimental statement. You let him wrap his arms around you and feel his warmth. "You should calm down for a moment, okay? This is the first time seeing your parents after years so I know it's a lot to take in."
You nodded and opened the door, letting Dipper and yourself in.
