Chapter 1

"SUMMER!!" I sigh and roll over as a sharp voice shatters my early morning dreams.

It's Saturday, what sane person is awake at 7 am?

I sit up, rubbing my eyes and pulling my hair back into a messy ponytail. Now that I'm awake, there's no way I'll be able to go back to sleep anyway.

I grab my phone from the bed side table where it'd been charging. I click it on and smile when I see a text from Tanner.

morning sleepy head, wanna go for coffee? -T

I grin and type a quick response. Wide awake now, I jump out of bed and throw on my favorite crop top and jeans. Slipping into my white chuck taylors I practically fly down the stairs, nearly ramming into Dad.

"Sorry Daddy." I mumble sheepishly. He shoots me a playfully condescending look, waggling his finger at me.

"Now Summer, how many times have I told you not to run in the house?"

I giggle and say, "Uh, about 7... million." He laughs and bumps my shoulder gently.

"What's the rush though?"

"Tanner asked if I wanna get coffee." I smile up at him. He raises an eyebrow, laughter in his eyes.

"You two have sure been spending a lot of time together lately." He grins mischievously.

I roll my eyes and try to laugh it off,  but I can feel my cheeks heating up. I look down and mumble something about being late, fanning my flushed face as I walk away.

My phone buzzes shortly after I get in my car.

wheeeeereeee areeee youuuuu -T

I giggle and pick up my phone to call him. I smile when I hear his deep voice on the other line.

"Well good morning young lass."

"Tanner that is the worst Scottish accent I have ever heard!" He laughs and drops the accent.

"Seriously where are you??"

"In my car, headed your way."

"Well hurry up, I want to talk to you about something." And with that, he hangs up on me.

Uhhh... okay...

I finally reach our favorite coffee shop and smile when I see his thick blonde hair through the window. Laughing quietly, I sneak up behind him and put my hands over his eyes.

"Guess who?" I giggle, doing my worst Scottish accent. He laughs and turns around, facing me.

"Hey it wasn't that bad... was it?"

I laugh and sit down across from him.

"Oh it was bad alright." He rolls his eyes and laughs.

"Well how are you?" He asks.  I raise an eyebrow.

"Uh... fine... You wanted to talk about something?"

"Oh yeah... that..." He runs his hand through his mop of thick blonde hair, a common thing for him to do when uncomfortable. I roll my eyes and laugh.

"Oh come on Tanner, out with it!" He shifts uncomfortably in his seat. I'd never known Tanner to be this uncomfortable around me. He had always been at ease, with a quiet confidence wherever he went.

"Uh... I was wondering if... uh... do want to... er..."

My head started spinning.

Is he gonna ask me out? no way. uh uh. absolutely not. I'm the one with the crush not him. he doesn't like me. noooooope.

"Uh...  what...?" I ask, trying not to seem too exited.

"Do you wanna learn how to surf?" He asks finally. I know my face must show how disappointed I am.

"What? Did I say something wrong?"

I sigh, then do my best to smile.

"I'd love to."

His grin comes back, and he reaches over and tugs on my ponytail.

"Sweet! Meet me at our spot in two hours."

I half smile, doing my best to look exited.

"See ya there."

He grins and stands up. I follow his lead and grin when he walks me out to my car.

"See you in a bit." He grins down at me and I can feel a blush creeping up my cheeks. We are so close, a couple more inches and we'd be sharing the same air. I look down, hoping to hide my flushed cheeks.

"Bye Tanner."
