Chapter One!
Ember's POV.
I was walking to my locker by myself. I could look in any direction to see someone pushed up against the wall by someone else. I hated this school- except for one kid. But he is my twin anyways. I reached my locker, looked around and reached into the back of the locker and pulled out my textbooks from the shadows.
"Hey, you okay?" Zane, my twin asked me from the other side of my locker door.
"Yeah... Just peachy." I mumbled remembering what happened this morning.
"Alright, let's hurry home- mom called and said there was someone there to see us." Zane said calmly. "She also said that your phone was shut off."
"Yeah... About that." I said nervously. "Chelsea threw my phone into the river under the bridge this morning..."
"Dad's gonna be really mad." Zane sighed and grabbed my hand. "Let's hurry... Wanna quicken it a bit?"
"Sure, just don't get lost in the shadows this time?" I joked, he nodded and held my hand tighter and I concentrated on the shadows around us since no one was in school now. We were then inside of the darkness, every way was dark but I could see which way led to our house. I guided him to the shadow of our treehouse out back.
"I never get used to traveling like that- but it's still cool!" He smiled when we walked into the house and his Great Dane, Zuro, jumped onto him while my German shepherd, Valdez, walked beside me and watched the two interact. I pet Valdez's head and he motions for me to go to the living room.
"Ember! Zane! Your home! Your home!" Our little sister, Kayla, and little brother, Luke, chanted while they ran around us.
"Ember, this is Professor Xavier. He ummmm, hear of your gift." Mom hesitantly said. "These are some of his students, Jean, and Scott."
"Hello." I said, putting my backpack down. "So what do you want? To use me as a test subject?"
"Oh no, we don't do that Ember. We just want to help." The girl, Jean, said.
"Yeah right. That's exactly what the shapeshifter said. Anyways, I don't need your help- I've been doing just fine on my own." I said, annoyed that I have to hear someone say this all over again.
"A shapeshifter?" Dad asked. "You mean the principal from last week?"
"Yeah. I could sense her lies, and her power. Just like I can to you right now." I crossed my arms and felt two sets of arms around my legs. I look down to see Luke and Kayla hugging my legs.
"You won't take her away! Not ever again!" They yelled in unison.
"What are you talking about you two?" Mom asked.
"A metal controlling man took away Ember a couple months ago- while you two were on the business trip." Zane said calmly, standing in front of me.
"We aren't like them. We want to help you Ember." The Professor said, coming closer in his wheelchair.
"Fine. What do you want me to do? Show you my powers and leave with you?" I asked sarcastically.
"You don't have to of you don't want to." Scott said emotionlessly.
"I'll go. Only if I can come home whenever I want." I negotiated.
"As long as it doesn't interfere with your training or education." Dad said after a while. "Here's a new phone- I already know what happened to your old one."
"Thanks dad. Wait, can Zane come too?" I asked, turning to the Professor.
"Unfortunately not. If you'd like, he could move to the school you'll be attending, but he can't live at the institute unless he's got a gift as well." The professor said calmly.
"Well, we were planning on moving somewhere new, so I guess we could find a nice house nearby the school so you two won't be too far away." Mom said, looking at dad and then me and Zane.
"Yes!" Me, Luke, Kayla, and Zane said excited.
2 weeks later:
I finished putting the last moving box into Zane's new room. Mom and Dad got jobs here, found a nice two story house, and enrolled Zane into my school that I started at weeks ago. I hugged my parents and younger brother and sister and walked with Zane to school.
"Hey Ember!" Said Jackie, a close friend of mine at school. "This your twin you've been talking about for days?"
"Yup. Zane, this is my best friend Jackie. Jackie this is Zane." I introduced.
"You can sit with us until you find some friends, or something." Kate, another friend, offered, smiling. Zane leaned over to my ear.
"Are all your friends girls? Cause if so- I'll be fine on my own." He teased, then sighed when he saw I waved at another friend who was a girl.
"No- I have three friends who are girls. The rest are all dudes that I'm sure you'll be buds with." I elbowed his gut. "You'll meet them at lunch." We then head to our classes.
After school at the institute:
I went inside and saw a face I thought I'd never see again.
"Logan?!" I gasped out. He turned to me so fast that he'd compete with Silver Streak.
"Wait. EMBER?!" He yelled out as I tackled him to the ground.
"Uhh... Am I missing something?" Kurt asked Scott.
"Professor, why didn't you tell me he was here?!" I asked the Professor, excitedly hugging Logan's torso as he got up.
"I had no idea you knew him." The Professor shrugged and I laughed.
"After leaving for a week, this is a great surprise to see you after so long." Logan said as he picked me up on his shoulder. "How's the two half-pints and squirt?"
"Well... Kayla and Luke were reluctant for me to come, but they all moved here so Zane can go to school with me." I said as I buried my head in the crook of his neck.
"I feel like I'm missing something." Rogue state as she walked up to us with Kitty.
"Logan saved my hide a while back. He is also my distant uncle from my mom's side." I said as Logan ruffled my hair.
"Huh, that's cool! So what are your powers anyways? You've been holding them back since you got here." Scott said.
"She fazes through shadows and light. She controls them too." Logan said playfully.
"Yup. When I wanna get somewhere fast- I travel through the sunlight or the shadows around me. I normally use shadows whenever someone else is traveling with me."
"What's it look like? Traveling through the shadows or sunlight?" Jean asked.
"Well... I can show you all what the shadows look like." I smiled as they all looked at one another worriedly, except for Logan and the Professor. "Grab onto each others hands please." After they all joined hands I grabbed Scott's other had and Logan's too. I focused on the shadow of the institute and heard everyone gasp in surprise. "Welcome to the shadow realm! Please refrain from letting go of one another- or else you will be stuck here."
"What?" Kurtz asked after he accidentally let go. Before he let go I was focusing on getting out- which meant he was stuck in the shadow.
"Kurt?!" Kitty asked in surprise.
"Don't worry Kitty-Cat. I'll save him!" I said dramatically and fazed into the shadow realm again. "Kurt- you can't let go. Last time someone did was when my brother wandered off and ended up in the shadow of a woman in Mexico!"
"R-really?" He asked worriedly.
"Yup- took forever for me to find him and it took months for me to not have him so clingy when in the shadow realm." I explained as we fazed out.
"So what does the sunlight one look like?" Kitty asked curiously.
"Curiosity killed the cat, you know that right Kitty?" I joked. She blushed a bit at my joke. "Anyways. I can't show you that one because you could go blind due to it. Imagine this: a million suns shining on one spot. Now imagine that- just in every direction and 10x worse."
"Owch. Even the thought of it hurts my eyes." Rogue said in her usual sarcastic tone.
"But I'm sure i can find a way to let you guys in one day." I shrugged and went to my room. I saw Valdez laying on my bed. "Valdez, wanna visit Zuro today?!"
"Woof..." He said tiredly and boredly.
"Okay? Anyways! Time to work on this homework!" I grabbed my engineering textbook and started on my project.
"What are you doing? It's dinner time." Kurt said curiously.
"Kurt! I was doing a project... It's already been 5 hours?!" I exclaimed shocked.
"Yup! The professor wants to speak with you, Jean and Logan after dinner." He then teleported out of my room. I fazed through the many shadows in the house and ended up under the dining room table.
"Ow!" I yelped when I bonked my head on the table. Everyone looked under to see me clutching my head. "Sorry." I whimpered as I got in my chair. We continued to eat in silence until we were all done. Everyone got ready for bed except for Logan and Jean. I followed Logan to the Professor and winced at a small pain that shot through my body.
"Ember, how would you like to accompany Logan and Jean to go find a mutant to recruit?" The Professor asked me, smiling up at me. I nodded. "He is very strong and may be teased for his mistakes."
"When do we leave?" I asked confidently.
"Well, if you could faze us to the derby, then we can leave now. If not then we use the jet." Logan explained. I nodded.
"Hold on." I said, holding my hands out, Jean grabbed my left one and Logan, my right. I focused on the shadows and when I reopened my eyes I looked at Logan. "Destination?"
"Monster truck rally in Lubbock, Texas." He stated. I nodded and focused on Lubbock, and then looked for a spot that held no onlookers. When we got there I dropped them off as fazed to the mutants room.
"Hello?" I asked inside the dark room.
"Who are you and what are you doing in my room?" Asked the voice of a big teenager who looked strong enough tone the mutant.
"Are you Fred Dukes?" I asked softly.
"Yeah, why? Who's askin'?" He asked defensive.
"My names Ember. I came here with some friends who want to help you with your powers." I explained calmly. "We have a school for mutants, we can help you."
"No you cant. No one wants me. Why are you any different?!" He yelled.
"Fred, I'm like you, I have powers too." I said calmly putting a hand on his shoulder. "I can control the light and dark. Please Fred, consider the offer. I'll come back with my friends after the show."
"Alright." He muttered and so I left.
