I feel like I'm sneaking in. Truth be told, I snuck out of my own house to get here.
Roman columns. Wrought iron gates. Am I going to a house party or rescuing the princess?
Maybe both.
I follow the flow of people up the never-ending driveway and pass through the front door, assaulted by the sounds and smells around me. The bass shakes my bones, the stench of vomit and alcohol mingling in my nostrils. My first instinct is to turn around and run away. But I can't miss my chance.
I slide up to a classmate of mine from trigonometry and she hands me a red solo cup with a smile. I can't hear what she says to me, but I imagine it's something like, "Wow! I never imagined you'd show up to one of these?"
You and me both, Lauren.
I give her a nod of thanks and grab the cup, slinking over to the keg to fill up my cup halfway. It's mostly foam, but let's be real - I'm not here for a drink.
Drink in tow, I stand back against the marble kitchen counters, taking fake sips here and there. Watching, waiting. A few freshmen girls step by, eyeing my body up and down and whispering to themselves before running off.
Yeah, the awkward puberty stage finally left me. By then, it was too late to become a jock - not that I wanted to. I'm more than happy to keep my brain cells and play fly on the wall. Though there would have been some perks to that life...
Speaking of that devil - she walks past me, almost as if she's floating on air. Devil or angel, I argue that you never know what you're going to get with her. She's the queen of the school - the girl every guy thinks of when he's alone and the girl every underclassmen chick wants to become by graduation. Rich family, perfect hair, perfect body...
That's who I'm here for. I don't just want her body, I want her heart. It's the craziest of pipe dreams, for a guy like me, but I've got to give it a try. At least before we leave for college.
She scopes out the drink selection on the counter and despite the massive collection of bottles before her, she shakes her head. The jock behind her offers her his cup and she waves it away, turning up her nose.
I rest my elbows on the counter behind me, watching the whole encounter. Trevor - or is it Travis - isn't pleasing the princess and it's amusing to watch. The joys of free entertainment.
She brushes past him and I down the rest of my drink, following along as they make their way through the crowded living room to the foyer. "I'm gonna grab some wine from the cellar, I'll be back," she assures him with a hand on his chest. He shrugs and heads back over to the kitchen.
As soon as the white basement door clicks shut, I set my empty cup on the decorative end table that already has ten other cups on it, and open the door for myself, walking down each step deliberately, carefully. The last wooden step creaks as I come to the bottom and she looks up from the wine rack in front of her, a bottle in each hand.
"What do you think?" she holds them up to me as she straightens out her posture. "Red or white?"
I look between the two bottles before looking at her. That look in her eyes - it's one I've dreamed of since I first met her. "Red."
She sets down the bottles behind her and strides up next to me, her hands on her hips. "Let's see if you're right..." She slides down the waistband of her skirt to reveal a thin line of red lace sitting at her hips. "You're two for two."
My lips crack into a smile and she brushes past me, taking my hand and tugging me down a hallway of matching white doors. She opens the first one to the right and pushes me in before locking the door. "Time for your prize."
