Chapter 18
Sam watched the fireworks as they went off in the sky, his eyes full of wonder as a red and green one splattered across the sky, crackling even more. Dean rested beside him, leaning against the hood of the Impala as another round went off, a smile playing on his lips that Sam hadn't seen before.
"These are amazing, Dean." Sam commented, breaking the silence between them as he turned his eyes back to the sky. "Thank you for bringing me here."
"Of course, Sammy. I know you love it here." Dean replied, his gaze sweeping over the field of overgrown grass for only a moment. They fell silent again, blue light illuminating their faces as a loud pop went off, echoing across the sky.
"Is it because I'm going to wake up soon?" Sam asked, a bit hesitant to do anything that could ruin the moment. Dean tensed, his eyes growing sad as he looked over at his younger brother.
"Even if I'm not the real Dean, it still hurts." Dean mumbled, glancing towards the ground. "I wish we had more time, so I can figure out how to say..."
Sam gave coma-Dean a small smile, leaning over and letting their shoulders brush together. "Don't say goodbye as goodbye then. Say it as if we're going to see each other again soon." Sam suggested with his usual cheeky grin.
Dean couldn't help but let out an amused 'hmph' scoffing the ground with his shoe. "You really think we're going to see each other again?" Dean asked, staring at Sam with an intense gaze. "Once you wake up, I'll become a distant memory to you. When you wake up, I'll be nothing."
"You don't know that." Sam pointed out, the fireworks in the background out of his mind now. "As long as I remember you, you exist right? Besides, isn't a coma just a really long sleep? Doesn't that mean that I can see you even after I wake up?"
There was a moment of silence from Dean as his brows furrowed with though. Finally, he sighed, turning to Sam and holding his hand out.
"I'll see you next time then?" Dean said, giving his younger brother the cheekiest smile. Sam smiled back, taking his hand and shaking it firmly.
A light, white and blinding, caught both of their attentions, forming at the end of the field, pulsing and turning slowly. Sam stared at it, letting his eyes adjust as he blinked before turning to Dean with confused eyes.
"What do I do now? What is that thing?" Sam asked, biting his lip as he felt a bit of nervousness form in his chest. Dean's eyes only turned sadder, his smile fading just the smallest bit.
"That's the real world, Sammy. Go for it." Dean urged, stuffing his hands in his pockets and giving Sam and encouraging nod. Sam took a deep breath, hesitating just a moment before he began running, letting the light engulf his body as the world behind him began to fade away.

The steady heat of a heart monitor filled his ears, the smell of disinfectant washing around his senses as his body twitched with new energy, his entire body stiff from almost a year of disuse. Yet, he couldn't open his eyes, his mind in the light sleep of a doze. Something was missing.
He could hear the mumbling of a woman and man just outside his door, muffled and incomprehensible. His heart began to race as the sound of the door opened, and three pairs of footsteps walked in.
"When do you think he'll wake up?" He could hear Castiel's voice, filled with more warmth than his usual deadpan way. He felt a tiny, cool hand brush against his head, pushing back a strand he didn't even realize was there.
"It shouldn't be long now. His heart rate is alreadyy higher than the regular rate for sleep." The nurse responded, her voice soft and almost timid.
"Then he needs to hurry up. There's only so much beauty rest one man can have." Dean responded, though Sam could tell by the way his voice clipped the words that he was nervous.
It was when Sam heard Dean's voice that his mind seem to release the hold his hand automatically reaching for Dean's voice before he could stop it. There was a moment's pause before he felt the warm hand of his brother took it and Sam slowly opened his eyes and met the gaze of the green orbs.
"Hey Sammy."
