Lorraine Broughton sat in her chair as she listened to Chief C and Eric Gray explain her mission.She was a top MI6 agent and had been brought to Berlin from London for her mission.She was to get The List a document containing the names of intelligence agents in Berlin.The List was in the hands of James Gascoigne but only days ago he was shot and killed by KGB agent Yuri Bakhtin who then stole The List.Eric gave Lorraine her file that would help her in Berlin.Lorraine looked over her file and understood her mission.However before she was about to go Eric said something else.

"You will also have a partner for this particular mission" Eric informed her.Lorraine looked at him with a raised eyebrow.Then the sound of footsteps were heard and Lorraine was a bit surprised when a young girl came into the room.The girl looked to be about fourteen years old with shoulder length curly brown hair and emerald green eyes.She was wearing what Lorraine could only assume was a catholic school girl uniform which consisted of a white long sleeve button up shirt,a knee length dark blue plaid skirt,a dark blue cardigan,black tights and black flats.

"Miss Broughton, meet your partner Madelaine Porter" Eric said as he introduced them to each other.

"She's a child" Lorraine said as she looked between the girl and her supervisor.

"Yes but she is a very intelligent young lady and had served with another agent of ours in New York" Eric said. "She will pose as your daughter while you are in Berlin" He told the female agent.

Lorraine turned her attention back to the girl and studied her.The girl was pretty and seemed very sweet by the polite smile on her face.

"Pleasure to meet you Miss Broughton" Madelaine said respectfully, holding out her hand for her to shake.

"Pleasure to meet you as well Miss Porter" Lorraine said as she shook the girl's hand.

"Please call me Madelaine" Madelaine said to which Lorraine nodded.

"This mission is very important so trust no one" Chief C said as he looked at them. "And make sure you get The List" He added.

"We will sir" Madelaine said with a nod.

Lorraine left the room with Madelaine before turning to the preteen.She was a bit surprised they would assign a child to work with her but Eric said she had already been on another mission before so she would see what talents the girl had.

"Do you have any other clothes that you could change into before we leave?" Lorraine asked.

"Yes" Madelaine said as she took off her backpack and opened it revealing a few sets of clothes.

"Alright go change and be quick" Lorraine instructed.

Madelaine nodded before going into the bathroom to get changed.A few minutes later she came back out wearing a white long sleeve turtleneck shirt,dark blue leggings and a pair of black boots.A dark blue headband kept her curly brown hair out of her face.The two soon got into the car as it took them to the airport.They boarded their flight and Madelaine sat by the window while Lorraine sat by the aisle.

Lorraine got herself a drink and was about to put her headphones on but turned to the girl.She saw Madelaine had pulled out a small book from her backpack and was reading it quietly.

"I assume the uniform was from your last mission?" Lorraine asked the preteen who turned to look at her.

"No, that is my school's uniform," Madelaine said.

"Really?" Lorraine said, a bit surprised.

"I attend a catholic reform school" Madelaine said.

"What about your parents?" Lorraine asked as she did not think the girl's family would be alright with their daughter going out of the country with a stranger.

"I don't have any" Madelaine said a bit sadly however she hid it well. "I'm an orphan" She informed the spy.

Lorraine was very surprised.She had not expected to hear that.However as Madelaine hid her sadness she hid her surprise.

"I see," Lorraine said.She watched as Madelaine went back to her reading and she decided to put on her headphones since this would be a long flight.Madelaine did not seem like she would be hard to handle on this mission.

Hours pass and eventually they arrive in Berlin Germany.The two got off their flight and headed through the airport.Lorraine stopped to get a coffee.

"Do you want anything?" Lorraine asked Madelaine.

"No thank you," Madelaine said.

"Are you sure?" Lorraine asked.She knew she was responsible for taking care of the girl while on the mission and making sure she didn't get herself killed.

"I'm sure," Madelaine said.

Lorraine got her coffee and they headed outside to wait for their contact David Percival to pick them up.

A man approached them and both assumed this was Percival and followed him to the car that was parked not too far away.Lorraine got in first and Madelaine got in after her.The car began to drive off.However Lorraine sensed something was off and assumed Madelaine had to as the fourteen year old immediately held onto her arm.The car went under a bridge that was under construction and that's when Lorraine carefully took off her shoe and started fighting the men off.Madelaine also fought back and Lorraine was taken aback by how good Madelaine was at defending herself.The car ended up flipping over once both men were dealt with.Lorraine pulled Madelaine to her and wrapped her arms around the girl shielding her from getting hurt.They heard someone coming and another man came who turned out to be the real Percival.Lorraine thinking he was another person sent to kill her shot at him but Percival assured her he was not.

The two got out of the damaged car as Percival got their bags out.Lorraine put her shoe back on before Percival opened the trunk of the car and their bags fell out.After getting their things Lorraine and Madelaine got into Percival's car with Lorraine in the front and Madelaine in the back.Lorraine looked back to make sure Madelaine had her seatbelt on which she did.Percival began driving very fast.

"Don't you think you're going a bit fast" Madelaine said as she clung to the seatbelt.

"Nope," Percival said and continued driving.The two adults discussed the mission before Percival made a quick stop and dropped off one of the fake agents.He then took Lorraine and Madelaine to the hotel they would be staying at.Lorraine got her bags and headed inside with Madelaine following behind.They found their room and went inside.The room was nice and had two beds set up.Madelaine put her things on her bed and took out some of the special equipment she brought along for the mission.

"What's all this?" Lorraine asked.

"Listening devices and some that will help with decoding things" Madelaine explained.

"You know how to decode?" Lorraine asked.

"Yes I learned how to when I was nine" Madelaine said which impressed Lorraine a bit.

"We will be going to collect Gascoigne's body later," Lorraine informed her.

"Alright " Madelaine said with a nod

Lorraine sat down on the bed and looked at the girl.She knew they had to work together in order for the mission to be successful and Lorraine had to get to know the girl in order for people to not suspect them.

"You understand I'm going to be responsible for you and making sure your taken care of while we are here right?" Lorraine said

"I know but I can take care of myself so you don't have to do much" Madelaine assured her. "I'm used to looking after myself," She said.

"I know but in case we get attacked I need to make sure your safe" Lorraine said.

"I understand" Madelaine said and unpack her things along with a small bible the headmaster of her school had given her.

Lorraine went back over and unpacked her things before getting herself a drink as well as having a cigarette.Madelaine sat on her bed reading her bible though she covered her nose upon smelling the smoke.

"You know smoking is bad right?" Madelaine said as she looked at the woman.

"It helps me relax," Lorraine said as she took a puff of her cigarette. "Haven't the other kids at your school tried sneaking a cigarette once in a while?" She asked.

"No, because they would get in trouble with the sisters or the headmaster if they get caught," Madelaine said. "And if that happens you get punished" She said.

"What kind of punishments do they use?" Lorraine asked as she looked at Madelaine.

"It depends on what you did" Madelaine said.

"They don't hit you do they?" Lorraine asked.She couldn't help but be a bit concerned as she knew catholic schools were very strict.

"No," Madelaine said. "They either have you clean or the headmaster will send you to your room for reflection" She explained. "I thankfully have never gotten into trouble" She said.

"Well you seem like a well behaved kid for your age" Lorraine said.

"Thank you," Madelaine said.

Soon they left to go get Gascoigne's body.Madelaine walked beside Lorraine and tugged her cardigan tighter to try and keep herself warm.They walked into the building and Lorraine had Madelaine wait for her outside so the preteen did not have to see.Madelaine sat down and waited patiently for Lorraine to come back.A few minutes later Lorraine came back.Madelaine noticed the frustrated look on the woman's face.

"They won't release him because something is incorrect on one of the papers" Lorraine explained.

"Well will just have to focus on getting that List" Madelaine said and they walked out.Madelaine couldn't help but feel like someone was watching them and looked around.She did not see anyone and continued walking with Lorraine as they went to meet with Percival again.They arrived and Percival let them in.He sat down as Lorraine looked around the place.Madelaine stood close to the woman.The two adults talked before they went outside for a walk to continue the conversation.

"I'm the only man in Berlin that can help you get that List" Percival said as he walked with Lorraine.

"Yes I've read your file" Lorraine said.

Madelaine listened to them talk and made sure to pay attention.Percival noticed the kid was being quiet and looked at her.

"Your awfully quiet kiddo," Percival said.

"I'm not a kiddo I'm fourteen" Madelaine said and crossed her arms.

"I know like Lorraine said I read your file" Percival said. "Madelaine Porter born April 12th in Cleveland Ohio and was left on the steps of the Sacred Heart children's home just a few hours afterwards with no note or idea on who the birth parents were" He said before adding. "You were there until the age of 12 before being sent to Incarnate Lord a catholic reform school in Hackensack, New Jersey"

Madelaine went quiet and looked down.She was used to being reminded that she was an orphan and was possibly unwanted by her biological parents so she was abandoned.Percival looked at Lorraine and saw she was giving him a cold look and sighed before looking back at the preteen.

"I'm sorry I'm just saying I know enough about you to know you would be good for this mission" Percival said.

"It's fine I'm used to the fact that I was probably unwanted" Madelaine said.

"You aren't unwanted kid you just had a bad start in life and your parents are real dumbasses for giving you up you seem like a nice kid," Percival said in an attempt to try and cheer her up.

Madelaine didn't say anything and soon she and Lorraine went back to the hotel.Lorraine noticed Madelaine was still a bit upset.She usually wasn't someone who was good at comforting others but she could tell Percival's words had hurt her.Lorraine sat down next to Madelaine and looked at the girl.

"I'm sorry about what Percival said and I'm sure you were not unwanted. Perhaps your biological parents couldn't take care of you and thought it was best to give you up" Lorraine said trying to be careful with her words.

"It's okay I've accepted the fact a long time ago" Madelaine said as she looked at the woman.

"Though he was right about one thing, you are a nice kid," Lorraine said. "I'm surprised you haven't been adopted," She said.

"I've had a few families foster me but they always sent me back and adopted a younger child instead" Madelaine said. "Families don't want kids above the age of ten and I've gotten used to it by now" She said, trying to not be sad. "Perhaps it's just not meant for me," She said.

Lorraine did not know why but she felt bad for the girl.She could not understand how families could turn down adopting a sweet child like Madelaine.She wrapped her arm around her shoulder and pulled her close for a side hug.Madelaine was surprised by the gesture but appreciated it.She rested her head against Lorraine's arm.They stayed there for a moment

Madelaine eventually pulled away and got up before looking back at Lorraine. "We should probably remain focused on the mission" Madelaine said.Lorraine nodded and went to go see if she could get some clues to help.

Days go by and Lorraine and Madelaine managed to get some more information on The List.They were attacked a few more times and one of them Madelaine was able to take out an assassin on her own.Madelaine was a bit scared afterwards but Lorraine assured her that she did a good job.Lorraine made sure Madelaine wasn't severely injured and luckily she wasn't all she had were a few cuts and bruises which Lorraine took care of immediately.Madelaine eventually calmed down and thanked Lorraine for her help.

"Your very good at this Madelaine I'm very impressed" Lorraine said and smiled a bit.

"Thanks" Madelaine said and smiled back.She started feeling a bit more comfortable around the agent and could tell Lorraine was comfortable around her as well.They have been successful with blending in as mother and daughter around others without much trouble.They were doing well so far however they still haven't gotten the List yet.

"Do you think will get it soon?" Madelaine asked Lorraine.

"Of course we just have to continue searching," Lorraine said.

Madelaine nods.It was late and they both decided to go to bed early so they could continue their mission in the morning.However during the night Madelaine struggled to fall asleep and Lorraine saw.She got up and went over to check on her.Lorraine sat down on the bed and looked at her.

"Having trouble sleeping?" Lorraine asked to which Madelaine nodded her head.

"Something on your mind?" Lorraine questioned.

"Just wondering about things" Madelaine said.

"What kind of things?" Lorraine asked.

"Life things" Madelaine said and turned to look at her. "I know once this mission is over I'll go back to the school but what about you?" Madelaine asked.

Lorraine thought about how she would answer the girl's question.She did not have any family nor a partner she would be returning to.Just her lonely house until she was assigned her next mission.

"Well I don't really have anyone I would be returning to" Lorraine said and she saw the girl's green eyes widen a bit.

"You don't have any family your going back to?" Madelaine asked and Lorraine shook her head.

"And no partner either" Lorraine said

"That sounds lonely" Madelaine said feeling bad for the woman.

"It is but I'm used to it" Lorraine said. "Though I'm sure your friends will be happy when you go back" She said.

"I don't have many friends," Madelaine said. "Only my roommate Juliette"

"Well I'm sure she will be happy to see you again," Lorraine said.

"Probably," Madelaine said. "She was so worried the first time I went on a mission," She said.

"Do you know what you will do once you finish school?" Lorraine asked.

"I'll probably work at the school as a teacher or something" Madelaine said.

Lorraine nodded and covered Madelaine with a blanket so she wouldn't get cold. "Get some rest ok" Lorraine said gently.Madelaine nodded and closed her eyes before falling asleep.Lorraine smiles though she couldn't help but feel sad.She found herself growing more attached to the girl each day and was going to be sad to see her go.She knew she probably wouldn't ever see Madelaine again and that made her sad.Lorraine went back to her bed before laying down.She stared at ceiling as many thoughts ran through her head.Eventually she fell back to sleep.

The next morning they woke up and ate breakfast together before continuing their work.Madelaine helped Lorraine with decoding and in turn Lorraine taught Madelaine some of her skills.Madelaine learned very quickly and Lorraine couldn't help but smile proudly at how well Madelaine was doing.After breakfast they went out to meet up with Percival again.He talked with them about their next step.Soon after they returned to the hotel as Lorraine was going to go out to get some information.

"Are you positive you will be alright on your own for a bit?" Lorraine asked as she finished getting ready.

"Yes I'll be just fine" Madelaine assured her.

Lorraine nodded as she puts on her lipstick.She left some food and water for Madelaine so she wouldn't get hungry.She also left a small communication device so in case something did happen Madelaine could contact her.Madelaine was sitting on her bed reading and looked up at Lorraine.

"You look great" Madelaine complimented her.

"Thank you" Lorraine said and gave her a small smile.

"Be safe" Madelaine said

"I always am" Lorraine assured her.She gave her a quick hug before leaving.

Madelaine was left alone and continued reading for a little bit before deciding to listen to some music.She mostly listened to country music and religious songs but it was comforting.She knew their mission wouldn't be much longer and soon she would return to her school and to her classmates.However she was going to miss Lorraine as the woman took great care of her.She doubled she'd ever seen Lorraine again but would hope she would be happy.

It turned out Percival had given the List to the KGB.Lorraine had confronted him and shot him dead for what he did.Lorraine made sure Madelaine turned her head so she didn't see which the preteen did.Afterwards they traveled to Paris to meet with Bremovych who had the List.Percival had informed Bremovych about everything and Bremovych ordered his men to kill Lorraine however she was one step ahead and admitted to giving him false information.Lorraine kills Bremovych and his men before leaving with Madelaine.The two got on a plane with Kurzfeld as Lorraine actually worked for the CIA.Madelaine sat down next to Lorraine as the plane took off.During the long flight back Madelaine fell asleep with her head in Lorraine's lap.Lorraine smiled and gently stroked the girl's brown curly hair.She saw Kurzfeld smile a bit.

"Your going to miss her aren't you?" Kurzfeld asked.He could tell how much Lorraine had grown to care for the preteen and knew once they arrived back in the states she would have to let her go back to the school.

"Yes" Lorraine said as she continued to stroke the girl's hair.

"Maybe you could visit her" Kurzfeld said

"Maybe" Lorraine said.

Hours later the plane landed and they got off the plane.Lorraine had gently woke Madelaine up and walked out with her.Once they got off the plane a car was parked outside and a woman in a nun outfit stood waiting.

"Looks like that's my ride" Madelaine said as she turned to look at Lorraine. "I'm going to miss you" She said

"I'm going to miss you too," Lorraine said and gave her a hug. "Take care of yourself," She said.

"I will, I promise" Madelaine said with a smile.

They walked over to the car and Madelaine put her things inside.The nun introduced herself as sister Mary to Kurzfeld and Lorraine.

"Thank you for taking care of Madelaine" Sister Mary said to Lorraine.

"It was my pleasure," Lorraine said with a smile. "She's a very sweet girl" She said

"She is" Sister Mary said before turning to Madelaine. "Are you ready to go?" She asked the preteen.

"Yes Sister" Madelaine said.

Sister Mary opened the car door and Madelaine got inside.She seatbelted herself in and placed her backpack beside her.Sister Mary got into the car and soon they drove off.Lorraine watched the car drive away sadly.She was going to miss her very much.Kurzfeld noticed and offered some comfort to her before they went their separate ways.Lorraine went home and laid down.It was nice to be back home but at the same time she was lonely.She never realized just how lonely she was until she met Madelaine.The girl had made a special place in Lorraine's heart and seeing her go made Lorraine's heart break.She ended up crying herself to sleep.

Weeks went by as Lorraine tried to get on with her life but she couldn't.She missed Madelaine and had begun to care for her as if she were her own daughter.It took time but Lorraine realized what she wanted to do.She drove over to Kurzfeld's office and met with him.

"I want to adopt Madelaine," Lorraine said as she looked at Kurzfeld.

"Are you sure?" Kurzfeld said as he looked at her surprised. "Adopting a child and taking care of one is a big responsibility" He said.

"I understand and I know I want to adopt her," Lorraine said. "I have thought about it for weeks and I know I want to do this" She said before adding. "She has never had a place to call home or a family to care about her and I want to give that to her after everything she's been through"

Lorraine hadn't realized how emotional it made her as tears began to fall from her eyes.Kurzfeld could tell Lorraine was serious about her decision.He agreed to help her with the adoption process and arranged for her to go meet with Madelaine so she could ask her.Lorraine was very grateful for Kurzfeld help and thanked him.

A week later she drove to Hackensack, New Jersey and arrived at Incarnate Lord.She got out of her car as one of the nuns came out to greet her.

"Welcome Miss Broughton" The nun greeted her. "I'm Sister Ruth" Sister Ruth introduced herself. "Father Bryce is expecting you" She said.

Lorraine followed Sister Ruth into the school and looked around.There weren't any other children around and assumed they were in their classrooms.She was soon brought to Father Bryce's office and went inside.The headmaster himself was sitting at his desk and greeted the agent.

"Hello Miss Broughton," Father Bryce said. "Please have a seat" He said.

Lorraine sat down and they began to talk.Lorraine informed him that she was here to see Madelaine to ask if she would like to be adopted.

"She's in her class right now but I would be more than happy to have one of the sisters get her" Father Bryce said.

"If it's not too much trouble please" Lorraine said

Father Bryce had Sister Ruth go get Madelaine from her class.Sister Ruth nodded and went to get her.A few minutes later she came back with Madelaine who was back in her school uniform.Madelaine was surprised to see Lorraine again and a big smile made its way onto her face.

"Miss Lorraine," Madelaine greeted the woman.

"Hello again Madelaine" Lorraine said as she smiled at her.

"What brings you all the way to Hackensack?" Madelaine asked curiously.

"Well I wanted to see you and because I have something to ask you" Lorraine said.

Madelaine looked at the woman before she was handed a piece of paper.Madelaine read it and realized it was an adoption form.

"This is a joke right?" Madelaine said as she looked at Lorraine and Father Bryce.

"It's not a joke Madelaine" Lorraine said as she looked at her. "I would like to adopt you" She said sincerely.

Madelaine realized she wasn't joking and began to cry.She had always wanted to be adopted but had given up that dream years ago.Now here was someone who only knew her for a week but had wanted to adopt her.Madelaine hugged Lorraine as she cried.

"Yes" Madelaine said as she cried.

Lorraine hugged her tightly and smiled.She gently wiped the tears off Madelaine's face.Father Bryce smiled as he was very happy for Madelaine.After a few minutes they began signing the paperwork before Father Bryce allowed Madelaine to go upstairs and get her things.Lorraine went upstairs with Madelaine to help her.Once they got to her room there was another girl sitting on the other bed in the room.The girl had straight dark brown hair,hazel eyes and tan skin.

"Who is this Maddie?" The girl asked.

"This is Miss Lorraine, the nice agent I was assigned to work with," Madelaine said. "She's adopting me" She said

"Oh my gosh that's amazing!" The girl said and got up to hug her friend. "I'm so happy for you Maddie," She said with a smile.

"Thank you Juliette," Madelaine said.

Madelaine began to pack all of her things with Juliette's help.Once she had all her things she was ready to go with her new mom.

"You take good care of my best friend," Juliette said.

"I will take great care of her," Lorraine said assuringly.

The two girls hugged each other one last time before Madelaine left with Lorraine.Father Bryce and a few of the other nuns as well as some of the other students came out to say goodbye to Madelaine.Madelaine said goodbye and thanked them for everything.

"May the lord bless you both" Father Bryce said.

"Thank you Father" Madelaine said.

They walked outside and Madelaine climbed into the car with Lorraine.Lorraine seatbelted her in before getting into the driver's seat.

"Ready to go?" Lorraine said.

"Ready" Madelaine said and smiled.

They soon drove off and enjoyed the car ride together.After hours of driving they arrived back in Washington before heading to have the adoption finalized.They met before the judge who they discussed it with and after some thought the judge signed off on the adoption and it was finalized.Madelaine also got her name changed.She was no longer Madelaine Porter but instead she was now Madelaine Lora Broughton.They walked out together as mother and daughter.

"I love you mom" Madelaine said and hugged Lorraine.

"I love you too sweetheart" Lorraine said and hugged back before placing a kiss on her forehead.

They go into the car and drove home together.Neither of them would ever be alone again as now they had each other and from now on they always would.
