Chapter 23(On the Battlefront with Icky Bug Creatures)

It was supposed to be a simple mission. Investigate the bad guy meeting and stop whatever plans the bad guys were trying to make. But of course, as it is with most heroes, the fates were not on their side.

"Tony, how are we coming with closing the portal?" Nat yelled flipping over one of the insect-like aliens that were coming out of the portal. She landed behind the alien and quickly shot the thing which then melted into a pile of goop. If it weren't for her highly trained assassin skills she would have gagged. As it was they were all pretty much covered in the stuff.

"Be patient! This is alien technology, how these thugs even managed to get their hands on it is beyond me," Tony said. He was alternating between sending blasts through the portal with his gauntlets and making another attempt at hacking the technology. He didn't want to just blast the technology because the power source was unknown but still letting out high amounts of radioactivity. Nearby three aliens turned to goop, courtesy of Clint who was up on a rooftop trying to cover Tony while he worked on disabling the machine.

The Hulk roared smashing through any alien that got in his way.

Steve grunted, he spoke into the comms, "Take your time, but also get it done quickly." It wasn't that the aliens were hard to defeat, they didn't even have weapons, but there were a lot of them and if the portal wasn't closed the aliens might overwhelm the Avengers. Then there was the fact that the aliens could eat through metal. The original warehouse where the tech had been store had already collapsed because the bug creatures had eaten through the supports.

Tony grunted in annoyance. These peasants just didn't understand what he was doing. If only Thor wasn't on Asgard dealing with important matters. Thor hadn't been really clear about his impromptu mission.

"Spiderman, how are you doing?" Steve asked as he rammed his shield into an aliens face, or what he assumed was the creature's face, either way it was dead now.

"Don't worry I'm doing good." Peter was swing up above them webbing as many aliens as he could to the ground or to the side of buildings. His taser webs were coming in handy. He flipped down to avoid an alien that Hulk had thrown and landed on the ground quickly flipping into the air and delivering heavy kicks to two aliens. He landed and spun around elbowing one in the face and then immediately punching another before flipping onto the side of a building.

Peter heard a quiet click to his left and turned to see a guy holding a camera. What was he doing here, Peter thought, the man could get hurt. Not that Peter could really criticized, he had gotten himself into pretty dangerous situations when he took pictures for the Daily Bugle. But Peter was Spiderman and this guy looked pretty normal.

Peter was about to head over there and tell the photographer to get to safety, when another wave of bugs came through the portal and Peter had to swing down to help defend Tony who was still occupied with the portal.

"Thanks, kid," Tony said as Peter punched the last alien that had been surrounding Tony.

"No problem." Peter beamed underneath his mask. He had just helped Iron Man! Then Peter gasped. He had forgotten about the photographer! He turned towards the building and saw it swarming with bugs. Part of the building had already collapsed. Peter looked up trying to spot the photographer.

"RAAJA, can you see him?"

"My sensors are picking up a heat signature near the center of the rooftop."

Peter wasted no time swing up and landing onto the quickly tilting roof. He spotted the man huddling near the AC unit. "I'm here to help." Peter said approaching the man slowly, cautious of the shifting building. He felt a tremor under his feet and he dove toward the man who yelped in alarm. Peter grabbed onto him as the building began to collapse.

Peter shot a web at the neighboring building grunting as the extra weight pulled on his arm. They were almost to the ground when it a piece of debris sliced through his web sending Peter and the man tumbling into a freefall. There wasn't time to shoot off another web. Peter barely registered RAAJA screaming at him as he twisted himself so that he could cushion the man's fall. Then they hit the ground hard. Peter's sense were overcome as a wave of agony swept through him. He forced his eyes open, the building was still collapsing. With a grunt Peter shoved himself to his feet, pulling the trembling man up beside him. He started to drag the man to a safer area when his spider sense screamed at him. Peter didn't think, he just shoved the man away from him. Then the debris crashed down around him.

A scream rang over the comms and the team immediately knew who it was from.

"Spiderman, report!" Steve called.

"Spiderman are you okay?" Natasha at almost the exact same time.

There was no answer.

"Kid, what wrong, what happened?" Tony said, and the team could tell he was starting to panic.

"Clint do you have visual?" Steve said.

"Last I saw he was near the warehouse on the corner."

"You mean the one that just collapsed!" Tony screamed.

"....yes."

Muffled shouts were heard over the comm.

"Where is Spider friend!" Hulk roared smashing any alien that dared get close.

"Tony, shut down the portal!" Steve said, trying to remain calm. They couldn't look for Peter if aliens kept pouring out of the portal.

Hulk roared again, "Hulk smash glowy circle." Hulk charged swinging his arm at Tony and sending him flying back. Tony grunted from where he landed, his armor taking the brunt of the fall.

"Hulk, no! If you smash the power source it could explode and take out a lot of the city and spread radiation poisoning for miles!" Tony yelled.

Hulk didn't listen, raising his fists and smashing the technology. There was a bright flash. (and everything just changed) A wave of energy exploded outwards sending everyone flying.

The team slowly climbed to their feet.

"Team report." Steve said.

"I'm alright, just a dislocated shoulder." Clint said.

"I'm good, though this armor's recked. My sensors aren't picking up any lingering radiation so it looks like the explosion of the portal only caused a shockwave. Does anyone see Hulk?"

"He's back to Bruce now, and it looks like he's good, though unconscious." Nat answered.

"How are you, Nat?" Steve asked.

"I'm fine. Just a dislocated shoulder, twisted ankle, and some cracked ribs."

"That doesn't sound fine." Steve said.

"As if you're any better." Nat shot back.

"I'll be fine." Steve said and neglected to report that he had fractured a bone in his arm and the burn that stretched across his back from being so close to the blast. His super healing would take care of it.

"Guys what about Spiderman?" Clint asked.

"I'm tracking his location now and calling in another suit and the Quinjet." Tony said. The team waited gathering together as the Quinjet landed.

"Guys, I've got a lock on him. He's, um, under the ruble." Tony said, struggling to remain calm.

"What!" The team all shouted.

"I'm working on getting him out." Tony said putting on the suit he had called. "Steve come help me."

"Of course." Steve approached, helping lift chunks of rumble and ignoring the pain from his fractured arm.

It didn't take long for them to clear enough to get to the kid and as soon as they did Tony was gently picking him up and rushing to the Quinjet. "Everybody hurry up, we've got to get him to medical and soon!" The Avengers piled on board, Clint helping support a still slightly out of it Bruce.

The jet took off and speeded towards Avengers tower.
