15. Eggs

"Did you get the eggs?" Aunt May asked. Peter closed his eyes. Forgotten. He had just returned home from his last thief. Surge was still in his mind. Could she really find the murder? Even after he had hit her?

"Great, forgot the eggs." He closed the fridge and walked back to the door. "I'm gonna get them now." Aunt May stopped him.

"No, you most certainly will not, not at this hour." Peter walked away from her, not wanting her to see his bruised face.

"Look at me Peter." He ignored her. "Take off the damn hood and look at me." Peter swiftly turned around and tugged off his hood. Aunt May gasped, tears in her eyes.

"Where do you go, who does this to you?" She asked, her voice soft.

"Please go to sleep aunt May." He whispered. Aunt May shook her head.

"Please tell me."

"Aunt May please, please, please go to sleep." Peter pleaded. The door opened behind them but no one noticed. Not even Peter with his enhanced senses.

"I can't sleep! Don't you understand?! I can't sleep!" Aunt May shouted back. She stepped closer and took the two pieces of strings that hang from his hoodie. "Peter, listen to me. Secrets have a cost, they're not for free." Both of them looked up, hearing the door close. There stood Jess, slightly out of breath with a bag in her hands. Peter took this as an opportunity to slip away.

"Jessica, what are you doing here so late" Jess smiled sheepishly and held up her bag.

"I've got your eggs." Aunt May laughed sadly before tears rolled down her cheeks. Jess placed the bag next to the counter and embraced the woman. She rubbed her back and turned her head. There stood Peter, his face bruised and beaten. He stared sadly at them before he disappeared up the stairs.

Half an hour later and the woman sat at the dining table drinking their tea. Jess had helped her laugh of the sadness and now they were just enjoying themselves.

"Have you heard anything of your father, Hun?" Aunt May asked taking Jess's hand. Jess shook her head.

"No but I'm not surprised" Aunt May scoffed.

"He is still your father" Jess shook her head.

"I'm adopted" Aunt May stared at her.

"Really" Jess smiled.

"Yes, you didn't think I've got this hair from my dad did you?" Aunt May laughed and shook her head. Their laughter died down and Jess took another sip of her tea.

"Have you found your real parents?" Aunt May asked her, feeling sad for the girl.

"It's not that easy. It was an closed adoption  so there is no record of my parents"

"Do you remember your parents?" Jess smiled sadly.

"It's mostly a blur. I remember a woman though" She told Aunt May, a distant look in her eyes. "I remember her telling me something but it's like she's talking in another language." Aunt May smiled.

"I am sure you will find them" Jess nodded and  send Aunt May a smile.

"Could you do me a favour?" Aunt May asked after a while. Jess nodded and placed her cup back down.

"Of course" Aunt May smiled at the girl.

"Could you keep an eye on Peter for me?" Jess sighed. "I don't know what he is doing and I'm sure he is in dire need of a friend" Jess nodded.

"I'll try my best"

"Thank you"
