A Torturous Turf War (Part 1)
"Hey Callie!" Axel said, pushing through the door.
"Whaaaatttt?" Moaned Marie. "I just woke up, damn it!"
"Oh. Sorry Marie!" Said Axel. "I was looking for Callie. She wanted to see something Shelldon and I made."
"I'm sure she's fawning over the humans. Leave me be until I feel like seeing people!" Said Marie irritably.
"K bye." Said Axel, trying to sound aloof.
"You can't do aloof dipshit. It doesn't suit you." Marie grumbled.
Axel left.
Just like Marie had guessed, Callie was talking to Jay and Riley, while the others just watched.
"Hey Callie! Shelldon made the suits you wanted to see!" Axel called.
"Ooh! Can I see?" She asked.
"Yes." Said Axel, as he handed over one of the suits.
"Looks noice." Said Jay. "Who's it for?"
"There are 5. Let's see if you can guess." Said Axel.
"Us?" Said Riley, puzzled.
"Yes. Callie wants you guys to try a.popular game for Inklings, but you'll need these to do it." Said Axel.
"Ok. What's it do?" Asked Jay.
"Well, it makes you act like an inkling." Said Axel. "At least when being shot by an opponents ink."
"Hold up. Callie is he ok?" Asked Riley.
"He is fine. He just can't explain very well." Said Callie. "Turf wars is what he is talking about. Basically, two teams of four players use ink weapons to control the most territory. If you hit an inkling with ink that isn't the same color as them, they will be splatted, and respawn at their base. Also there are specials and different weapon classes, but those are complex." Callie explained. "It's really fun!"
"Is Axel any good?" Asked Riley. "He doesn't have a suit."
"Axel can jump back to spawn when he is.hot, and he does so everytime, which isn't often. He made his own weapons, which are extremely overpowered. The check is he can't actually refill his ink, without use of some kinda tube. Being immobile while.reloading is the main reason he still gets let in." Said Callie. "Now that I think about it... Axel! Can they swing in the ink with these?"
"Callie, we didn't test. It is hypothetical. Because I can't really use it, being half machine and all that. Luckily, Shelldon won't mind if we take em for a test run." Said Axel. "I guess I'll take on all four, or maybe we can have Colt do that, I have stuff to do, Edge asked me to take him hang-gliding, and I made some gliders while Shelldon made the suits."
"I'll call him." Said Callie.
"No need." Said Colt. "I'm already here."
"When did you..." Asked Callie.
"I followed Axel here, when he left with Shelly." Colt said.
"Ok, either I'm creeped out by that, or you have jealous boyfriend syndrome." Said Axel.
"Well, as much as I like you as a friend, Axel, you did walk off at 7 am with my girlfriend. And while I know you respect us like that, I gotta be sure." Said Colt.
"Well, Shelly is lucky to have someone like you. Now do you mind shooting these.guys in Shelldon's gym? Edge said he wanted to go gliding. I already called the hospital, just in case." Said Axel.
"Why?" Asked Colt.
"Remember how sick Shelly looked after we got off the helicopter? Because hang gliding is like 100 times worse." Said Axel.
"Ah. Alright, suits on, guys, let's.gp test things." Said Colt.
The humans suited up in the suits.
"What are these made from? It feels slimy." Said Jose.
"It's probably a good idea for me not to answer." Said Axel.
"Pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaase?" Asked Callie.
"Callie no. It's better left unknown. Kinda like where you get milk from." Said Axel.
"Oh. So it's like that. Ok." Said Callie. "Needlessly weird or unnerving?"
"Dead on." Said Axel. "Well, cya!"
Axel jumped the wall, and returned to get Edge for Hang-gliding.
2 hours later.
Axel POV
"Oh wow, you sure this is safe?" Said Edge, nervous.
"I'll be below you, so if you fall I can catch you. It'll be fine, just don't wriggled your legs, and do not let go." Said Axel.
"O-okay." Said Edge. "I'm ready..."
"Alright. In the everliving memory of my time, I say YEET!" Said Axel, launching Edge off.the skyscraper they were on, and his glider caught, beginning his slow glide down, while Axel jumped off, with his own glider, following under edge, as promised.
"This was a mistake!" Edge howled into the wind, turning green. But soon, he calmed down, as the momentum from Axel throwing him let off.
"Actually, this is kinda cool!" He said, admiring the landscape below.
"Not for the faint of heart though." Axel called up. "If I took Shelly she would be sick before the proper glide even began!"
Colt POV
All five humans were registered in the SPAWN system. Colt stood alone on the other side of the gym, warming up. Callie and Marie were behind the humans, to brief them about what to expect.
"Colt is a nightmare player." Said Marie. "If those suits works like they should, expect to be splatted dozens of times each. Note I said each. Colt is one of the best turf players in the city. Shelly and Axel are just as skilled, and Edge is not far behind. There is a reason for this, so expect worse than the worst, if you can."
"All of you have been given the starter kit, featuring a few items. Ignoring the clothes, you all have a Splattershot Jr, with the subweapon splat bombs, and the special inkzooka." Callie took up. "Subweapons are used by holding out your hand in a grabby motion." She demonstrated. "And your special charges by inking the ground. When ready, your weapon will hum. Inklings also have little ink drips splash out of their tentacles, but that won't happen to you, I think."
"If you get hit too much, you will respawn at this platform, that is assuming the suits work." Said Marie.
"We should see if they can swim in ink, first." Called Colt. "Who feels brave?"
Jay said "I guess I do."
"Alright then." Said Callie. "Shoot the floor, go stand where you hit, and we will try to talk you through it."
Jay did as asked. He shot the floor a few times, and stood on the stain.
"Perfect, big enough for testing. When Inklings are first learning to change forms, they need space. But skilled inklings, like us or Colt, need only as much ink as the size of our torso, not that it's very practical." Marie said.
"Ok, to change forms, you have to focus. You know swimming, from your kind?" Callie asked.
"I'll ask how you know about that later. Ok, swimming. What about it?" Asked Jay.
"Imagine the feeling of swimming. The more vivid, the better." Said Marie. "Once you feel ready, try to dive into the ink. Not on, you must look past the surface. Into the ink, as if it were much deeper than it looks."
Jay stood for an extended amount of time, and suddenly seemed to collapse. Hurriedly, he changed back to human.
"Holy shit, that was weird!" He exclaimed.
"Dude, are you ok?" Asked Jose.
"I got a picture. You look kinda freaky." Said Riley.
"Did he look like this?" Callie asked, turning into a squid herself.
"Ahh!" Gaven screeched.
"About that, but he was blue." Said Riley, looking at the picture.
"Well, right now you are using blue ink. Colt is currently orange. Inklings are able to change colors, either green, pink, blue, yellow, purple, or orange. The SPAWN pad changes your color to a random patient of opposites. Pink to Green, Yellow to Purple, and Orange to Blue. Each team gets one of these colors." Marie explained.
"Oh ok." Said Riley, entirely confused.
"We want all of you to practice changing forms for about..." Callie looked at Colt.
"Let's do 15 minutes. I'm watching a podcast and stretching out." Called Colt.
"Can't we just... Not?" Asked Jay.
"Well, yes, but heres the catch." Said Callie. "Unless you are splatted, which we have yet to test, or you swim in ink in that form, you can't reload. Once you run out of ink, that's all you can do."
"So it is very stupid to not use... that form." Said Jay, still shaken, but understanding.
"Exactly." Said Marie.
"Well, 15 minutes start now!" Say d Callie, starting a timer. "Marie and I will help if you have trouble."
15 minutes of coaching later.
"They ready?" Colt called.
"I think." Called back Callie. "I'd ask you to go easy on them, but I know you won't."
"Heh, guilty as charged." Joked Colt. "Well, humans, get ready. I won't hold back, just because you guys are new."
All the humans gulped, and nodded.
"Before you start!" Callie said. "Let me explain the automap. As a squid, you can jump super far. Using the automap lets you choose where to land." Callie spent 30 seconds explaining the map. Luckily, the automap was very like the locater glove radar GPS all the humans already owned.
"3! 2! 1! Go!" Yelled Callie.
"Remember, the goal is coverage." Said Marie. "So shoot that floor."
