Chapter 13: Ship in a Bottle
They dashed, once again, through the trees, passing them in a blur. She could distinctly hear the pirates behind them yelling and screaming behind them. She could also hear their swords slashing away at the stray stalks, it mingled with her and Jack's swords as well.
She tripped over a rock, sending her sprawling to the ground. Hastily, she stood up, glancing up to find that Jack hadn't stopped.
She wasn't surprised.
She dashed after him, only to dodge the swing of a sword to her left. The lead pirate had swung at her, a snarl plain across his face.
Parrying the next blow, she kicked him back into his comrade and continued running after Jack.
They had reached the stream, and this time she didn't hesitate to jump over. Jack had run across the fallen trunk and was now moving nearly beside her.
Jack's head was caught in a tangle of vines and leaves. He swung his sword viciously, cutting himself free.
She didn't stop for him as they continued on, she could just barely, through the trees, see the rope bridge, stringing across the canyon.
Jack dashed a few, small feet behind her, she could hear his ragged breathing, as well as her own blood and heart beat, pounding in her ears.
She shot across the overpass, grasping the rope for balance whenever she could.
Temperance reached the end, breathing hard. "Jack!" She called out, but he was already across.
As though he had read her mind, he pulled out his sword, fumbling with it, and in virtually perfect unison, they swung down.
The ropes, at least on their side, sustaining the bridge, were cut.
Two lone pirates who had rushed ahead of the rest of the group, now clung to the falling ropes as they cascaded down into the river far below.
She could dimly hear their screams as the rest came barreling over the hill, nearly skidding over the ledge.
She watched with shock, but soon, it became giddiness, and she breathed out a laugh. Jack smirked next to her, sheathed his sword, and began to walk down the hill, using the trees for balance.
She followed, still breathing hard.
"That came in handy," She offered, still grinning. He still had a slight smirk playing on the corners of his lips.
"That it did." She took a moment to catch her breath and climb down off of a rather steep drop. The ground was close to leveling out, perhaps they would go back to the first clearing, but she hadn't the slightest idea what Jack was thinking now.
"What now?" She asked as the floor began to smooth out beneath her feet.
They've reached a steep hill littered with thin trees, with small leaves. Below, she can see the beach more clearly. He looks down toward the shoreline, they could just see through the trees.
"We commandeer one of the boats, and we row ourselves out of here, savvy?" She looked at him questionably.
"We're going to take one of their boats?"
"Commandeer, we're going to commandeer one of the boats," He steals a quick look at her expression. "Nautical term."
She questions him further.
"What about your ship?" It's his turn to glance at her questionably.
"My ship?" She thought it would be obvious.
"The Black Pearl, your ship, the one Barbossa wants?" He sighs.
"It's really not that simple, love." He continues scanning the beaches.
"Why?" He looks at her frustratingly, gesturing with his hands as he talks.
"Love, the Black Pearl, is in a bottle." Her eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
"How-" But he cut her off.
"Love," He sighed. "It's a long story." And before she could protest he reached for the pocket in the right side of his jacket and pulled out a bottle.
Low and behold, there was a ship inside. From the sails to the helm, almost every inch was painted black.
At least now she knew why the ship had its name.
There was water in the bottom of it, and the Black Pearl was floating on it, as though it were in a miniature sea. The sails rippled as though wind were moving it on the ocean.
Her mouth had parted in slight surprise, and as soon as she had realized it, she closed it with a snap.
Jack slipped it back into his jacket and continued to scan the beach. She stood there in silence for a moment, before another sound reached her ears, and it seemed to be emanating from the hillside.
She looked down.
More pirates, this band is bigger than the last, and they seem to be moving faster.
Noticing her frozen stature, Jack looks down too. His eyes widen and he curses under his breath.
She runs first, and he, not long after. Jack lets out a strangled yell, his arms swinging wildly as he ran next to here.
They reach a path of sorts and plow through the clear ground, leaping over any stray rocks. A pirate leaped out into the path in front of her, wielding a sword.
Temperance let out a small shriek and leveled her own sword at him. Dimly, she can hear Jack turning around and facing the other pirates.
She lunges.
Their swords met with a clang of metal, ringing through the air as he leers down at her. She realizes what sounds like a snarl before pulling away and striking again.
The man facing her is short and squat: Being smaller than him, she dodges left and right, light on her feet. They spin, almost dancing, and she can see Jack in a blur, holding off two pirates not far off.
Her attention is snapped back to the pirate as he now lunges at her. She's startled by his suddenness and frantically meets his blow.
He pushes on her blade, forcing one knee of hers to the ground. He smirks down at her and drives harder.
Swiftly, she removes one hand from the hilt of the sword, grabs her own from her belt, and drives it through her opponent's stomach.
His eyes widen slowly in shock, and he falls backward, blood spurting from the wound. She grimaces and stands, moving to grab the sword from his now blood covered clothes.
He's making a strange gurgling noise, and a drop of blood trickles from the corner of his mouth.
Pulling the sword away, she cringes at the amount of blood and wipes it on the grass beside her, streaking it crimson.
Turning, she finds Jack next to her, the pirates he was facing nowhere in sight, but there is blood on his blade.
She doesn't ask what happened, instead, she continues to move, farther away from the oncoming band of pirates surely not far behind.
They reach the clearing, still breathing hard and still not saying a word to each other. Jack slides behind a tree, motioning for her to do the same.
She raises an eyebrow in question and begins to ask such when the sound of feet crashing through underbrush reaches her ears.
Flicking her head in the direction the noise was emanating from, she follows Jack, ducking behind a tree next to him, holding her breath.
They stand there, and she wonders if the pirates were going in a different direction, before they hurtle through the trees, and barrel past them.
They don't hesitate, instead, they continue to yell and holler, their swords waving air.
They vanish through the other end of the trees, the noises fading soon after. She steps out from behind the tree, breathing returning to normal, and laughs.
Jack steps out from behind the tree, but he doesn't laugh. Rather, he moves into her view with his sword drawn. Her laugh fades and her mouth opens slightly, and she draws her own, preparing to fight Jack if necessary.
But Jack, it seems, has no intention of fighting her, he's staring somewhere over her shoulder. She turns around to a laugh behind her.
There stands Barbossa, with a band of ten pirates surrounding him, all sporting the same sneers as the rest of the pirates before them.
The captain's grin seems rather large and intimidating.
"Boo." Is all he says before the pirate launch themselves at her and Sparrow.
With somewhat of a screech, she draws both her swords and blocks a blow from two pirates. The one on her right is squat and isn't moving fast. The one on her left, however, seems nimble and agile.
She can't see Jack from where she's positioned, but from the clanging of swords, he must be facing the same problem as she has.
Swinging under the blade of the pirate on her right, she twirls around him, hair flying around her face, and quite literally, stabs him in the back.
The other man, parlays her blows, the slightest grin on his face as he does so, and with a swift movement, he cuts a long gash on her arm.
Hissing, she lunges at him, catching him by surprise, and cuts a deeper, long slash on his leg. He falls, clutching it, and she turns just in time to dodge another blow to the head.
Ready to face her next pirate, she levels her sword at him, before another protrudes from his chest.
Gaping and expecting to see Jack, she turns, only to find him occupied with three other pirates.
Turning back to the now tumbling pirate, she watches as the sword retreats, and he crumples to the grass.
The woman behind him could as well been her twin. From the color of her hair, a deep, but warm brown, to the shape of their eyes, almond shaped.
She wears a white shirt, streaked with dirt only somewhat, brown pants, and what looks like a small jacket that covers only her shoulders. The sword is still in her hand, dripping blood from the tip, pooling onto the field.
Deep down, she knows who it is, but when she finds her words, only one comes out.
"Angelica?"
HEHE!!!! *evil maniacal laugh*
So a quick head up, the next chapter WILL contain a bit of Spanish. For those of you who know Spanish, high five, those of you who don't, I will be placing parentheses next to the Spanish, with English inside.
