Chapter 11: Moonlight

The ship goes up in flames, the sides exploding outward, the deck shooting up, and plumes of smoke rise from the wreckage.

Pieces of torn sail go up in flames and rain down from the sky, landing on the deck.

Jack crouches next to her, breathing hard, but she can almost hear his grin on his face.

She turns to him. "What did you do?" His grin widens even more, but he doesn't answer.

They both look out from under the stairs, watching what remains of the crew walk throughout the ship until a pair notices them, shouts, and the rest of the crew come running.

Barbossa is nowhere to be seen and neither is Scrum as the crew ropes both of their wrists and throws them in yet another cell below decks.

Due to the now rising level of water in the cell, she stands and Jack leans against the bars in a corner.

Bending forward at an awkward angle, she retrieves the knife from her boot once again and begins to, again, cut away at her bonds.

Jack doesn't ask for his ropes to be cut, and she doesn't oblige.

They both stand in silence and Jack closes his eyes, the only noise coming from the waves crashing against the port side until she decides to break it with a question.

"Barbossa said something about a pearl, what does he want a pearl?" He opens his eyes and stares at the wall and responds.

"The Black Pearl, love, is a ship, magnificent and hugeish."

She snorts, he raises an eyebrow in her direction, still smirking.

They pass other several hours in silence, shifting from foot to foot. Eventually, Jack sits in the continually rising level of water, but she remains standing.

Her stomach growls, and she realizes she hasn't eaten since yesterday, but not one crew member pays them a visit in their cell.

Ultimately, when the sun no longer shines and both the moon and stars have replaced it, do footsteps sound in the stairwell.

She springs off the wall, but Sparrow remains sitting, as though he has nothing better to do.

Multiple crew members, at least five, creep toward the cell, ropes in hands, and evil looking smirks on all of their faces.

The first opens the door, and she kicks outward, hitting him in the chest, and knocking him back.

The second approaches and she punches toward his torso, but he catches her hand, pulls her close, and grabs the other, while another crewman ties her wrists.

The rest walk over to Jack, intending to drag him out, but he stands, holds out his hands, and walks out himself.

With men holding her arms, she has no choice but to follow them on deck.

In a scenario which seems awfully familiar, Barbossa stands at the helm, while the crew stands at the rails, watching in earnest.

She again is forced to her knees, while Jack remains to stand, looking up at Barbossa with what looks like curiosity.

Barbossa slowly walks down the stairs, every other step sounding of wood on wood.

When he reaches the bottom he plants himself in front of Jack, smirking.

"Jack." He puts an arm around his shoulder, and Jack looks rather uncomfortable.

"One last chance Jack, the Pearl, and I'll be lettin' ya go."

Jack grimaces again, wearing the same expression as the first time Barbossa asked.

"I don't have it Barbossa, might as well let us go aye?"

Barbossa grins, pulls out his sword, and points it dangerously close to Jack's chin. She speaks up.

"Barbossa, you swore no harm would come to him." Jack shoots her a look, but she's not paying attention to him, only the captain.

"Aye, I did, but I never said anything about you Miss Teach."

He moves his sword to her hand, the tip barely scraping her skin, and speaks now to Jack.

"I'll be cuttin' 'er fingers off one by one then?" She sucks in a breath, and Jack grimaces yet again.

"Barbossa, I rather think this is all unnecessary." The captain's grin widens even more.

He turns to one of the men behind her.

"Tie a rope 'round her waist gents." They laugh quietly, and she feels a rope snake around her waist.

Before she can comprehend him at all, Barbossa jerks his head.

A larger man behind her picks her up as though she weighs nothing, and throws her over the rails, into the waves.

It hits her like a canon, icy cold, it freezes her joints, and she starts to sink slowly. She didn't get to take a full breath, and already her lungs burn.

Her movements sluggish as she reaches for the knife in her sleeve, praying it's still there.

It is. She slips her hand on the handle and pulls it from her sleeve. The ropes have swollen in the water, and she works more to cut them.

The moon moves out from behind a cloud, giving her enough light in the shadow of the ships hull to see. Cutting away at the last of the ropes that bind her wrists, she shakes off the rope and it drifts slowly into the darkness below her.

The shadows from the ship move, illuminating her arms in the moonlight.

It takes her a minute to comprehend what she's seeing, and when she does, she screams, or rather, tries to.

Realizing she has just wasted the rest of her air, she notices something else.

She's not breathing.

Or rather, her chest is moving, up and down, as usual, but she doesn't feel the air in her lungs. In fact, she doesn't feel anything. Not the burns on her wrist from the ropes, nor the gashes from the canon fire. Nothing.

And her arms are those of skeletons.

Her baggy sleeves, in the moonlight, are torn and old, revealing bones underneath. Her bones aren't pearly white, but a tan or brown color, with flecks of dry and dead skin falling away.

With an idea blooming slowly in her head, she cuts away at the rope around her waist, the frayed ends dropping away with the first.

Swimming toward the other side of the boat, she moves to the shadow of the hull again, her arms molding back into her own.

Holding tightly to the wooden walls of the ship, she begins to climb.

She slips, a number of times, but eventually, she reaches a broken piece of wood sticking out from a hole near the railing.

Voices dimly reach her ears, and she listens, it's Jack.

"-wear on pain of death, that I will give you the Pearl if you bring her up."

Noticing pirate standing in front of her, with a sword protruding loosely from his belt, she reaches, and very carefully, pulls it out.

Out of the corner of her eye, she sees Barbossa nod his head, and the same man that threw her overboard grabs the other end of the rope and pulls.

Out of the corner of her eye, she sees Barbossa nod his head, and the same man that threw her overboard grabs the other end of the rope and pulls.

A few moments pass, and she prepares to stand. The rope is completely pulled up, revealing the frayed end, and as quiet as possible, and a voice in her head telling her this is stupid, she stands on the railing, gripping onto the ladder of rope that trails up to the mast.

Hidden in the shadows of the sails, with the sword in her belt, she waits for the captain.

He stares at the frayed rope for a moment, then with the breeze rippling through her hair, he turns his head, and a look of what seems to be surprise crosses his face.

Jack's head tilts to the side slightly, his eyes trained on her.

The pirates near her, trailing along the rails, move aside, some stepping on another's feet.

A loud bang sounds through the air, followed by a small pressure in her chest.

Glancing down she finds a small hole through her ribcage.

It takes several moments before she realizes what happened. With a grin spreading slowly across her face, she looks up, searching for the source of the shot.

A man, near the helm, holds a smoking gun, a facial expression of confusion moving across his face.

"Missed." She grin. Jumping down, she pulls out the borrowed sword from the pirate and walks toward Barbossa.

He grunts, most likely in frustration, and draws his own sword from his belt.

No longer hidden in the shadow of the sail, her whole skeleton is revealed. Her boots are torn, her pants, her shirt, and all her bones sport the same look as her arms.

She lunges with a snarl, hitting his blade hard, the sound of metal upon metal rigging across the ship.

The dance, their swords clashing in the night. She meets his blows hit for hit.

They move around the ship, the crew members moving every time, out of their way.

She ducks a hit to the head striking out to his feet, but he jumps, up and away. Straightening she turns and delivers a powerful strike to his chest.

He blocks it with his own, and they stand still for a moment, both of them locked.

They both back away for a split second, then remembering a move from her second duel on the ship, and lunges forward yet again.

In one swift move, she flicks her arms, both wrist, and elbow, and his sword goes flying, landing point down near the stairs.

Breathing hard, she advances again, pointing her sword at his neck.

"I want my sword back captain," she snarks. He grunts, again, and jerks his head to one of the crewmen at the helm, next to the one who put a bullet through her chest.

He vanishes through the skull decorated doors of the captain's quarters for a minute, the reappearing, carrying her sword.

Holding out her other hand as he approaches, he's at first hesitant to give it to her, but when she beckons with her fingertips, he hands it over.

Speaking to Jack now still standing near the rails, she jerks her head and he comes walking. Pulling out her own sword, still holding the one at Barbossa's throat, she cuts his bonds at his wrist.

He shakes off the remains of the rope, and now she speaks.

"Get one of the boats."

He smiles slightly, sends her a mock bow, and saunters toward the opposite side of the ship where the long boats hang, suspended in the air by yet, more ropes.

After much heaving on Jack's part, she moves behind Barbossa, and pokes him, urging him to move forward.

He does so, if not reluctantly, and they both approach Jack, who is lowering the boat into the water.

Jack climbs in first, Barbossa follows, at the point of a sword, and with one last look back at the crew, she follows suit.
