The Trouble
I regard Mohan nervously. How did he know I was here? Did he go to my parents? I hope not. I think of Veer, and my heart beats faster. I will kill the bastard if by any chance he talked with Veer. With renewed ferocity, I marched towards Mohan catching his gaze.
"There you are," he says in an unnerving tone.
As I approach him, I study his profile. It is different than the last time I had seen him. Apart from his gaudy shirt, he appears almost normal with his shaven face and neatly trimmed hair. He sets his posture straight and walks down from the porch meeting me halfway.
"I was beginning to wonder if I had the wrong information," he says noticing my profile. "What happened? You look flushed."
I look down and pull the shawl tighter around me. "Why are you here?" I ask biting my words to be civil.
"I am your husband. That is what I am," he grunts, and for a moment, the violent streak in his eyes flashed.
"Ex-husband!" I reprimand.
"I don't believe in the papers. I believe in the saat phere we performed on this very day five years ago," he says quietly.
"We are legally divorced. Is that not clear enough for you?" I advance. "And don't you dare mention our wedding. Those vows meant nothing to you. Ever."
"Now now...wifey. I am trying my best to talk sense into you," Mohan moves a step closer.
I move back and hold his gaze.
"I am here not because I want to get back to you. I am here because there is the heir of Chauhan's with you. And I am going to take him home."
"He is no more a Chauhan. He is my boy. We have been over this hundred times."
Just then his eyes change colour as he looks over my shoulder.
"Samaira, you okay?" Josh asks moving on my side.
"Who is this man, Somi?" Mohan growls in his throat.
What courage left with me drains away as the two men regard each other.
"Could you excuse me, Josh?" I ask him firmly. I needed to deal with Mohan alone. Josh being there only could worsen the things.
Josh looks at me uncertainly and resigns. "I am inside. Just call out if you need me." He says and walks away.
"Well?" Mohan glares.
"I am not obligated to tell you anything," I rebuke immediately.
"Fine!" he exclaims. "Then I should ask him."
"Wait!" I reply quickly. "Don't bother him. He is just a guest living here while I am renovating this place."
"Oh...! It seems to me that you are having an affair with that man. Very convenient," Mohan growls menacingly. "Don't you have any shame left in you?"
"Get the hell outta here, Mohan. What I do or don't do is none of your business. So walk off." I growl back.
He stumbles forward in one quick motion and grabs me by my hair. "Bitch! Whore! How many people are you sleeping around with?"
Before I could struggle to free myself, another set of hands grab the back of his shirt and jerks him away from me. Josh punches the side of Mohan's face, landing him in a heap on the ground.
"Stay the fuck away from her!" Josh shouts in the windy night.
I watch as Mohan glowers back at Josh wiping the blood flowing from his nose. The attack is so sudden that he struggles to get back on his feet.
"Mohan, just go, okay? I will talk to you in the morning, alright. Leave now!" I say desperately.
"You will pay for this, Somi!" Mohan replies breathing heavily. "This is not the end. I will ruin you and then take Veer away from you."
"Get out! Get out!" I cry out, not bothering to cover my tear filled face.
It seems like he wants to hit me and at the same time, he cringes away from Josh. He certainly hit him hard enough to feed the fear. Mohan gives me a last warning look and stomps off.
When I turn to look, I see Josh's figure disappearing on the other side of the door. I sigh and sob in silence. Why did that man come in the first place? How much did Josh hear of our story? My heart sink and my stomach knots. There was no way he couldn't have heard everything. What is he thinking now? For all, I know he may be regretting even kissing me. Who will want to get into a mess? What am I expecting to happen? I shrug off the thought and make my way inside the warmth of the house.
